Reacting to TLAT Reviews pt1

I saw Thor: Love and Thunder last night and my friend @marvelvibess​ just sent me these hilarious reviews of the movie. They are too good not to react to honestly.

As an ADHD gen Z I loved that “ADD pace!” This movie isn’t for you Logan its for the queer neurodivergents and I love it for that!

Ok so I love this one. First of all literally every marvel movie ever made has a political agenda. The comics do too! The mutants/X Men are an allegory for every minority. Caption America was created by two jewish men to fight Nazi’s in a time when nazi ideals were pretty common in the US. Marvel has never been apolitical.

Second I love how hung up on Korg being gay she is. First off Korg is gay, married to a man and has kids in the comics, its literally cannon. Second these movies involve: gods, aliens, genetically enhanced super soldiers and a man that can turn big and green and she’s mad about a gay rock??? Bro literally nothing in these movies are realistic, but unlike hulk, and super soldiers we know queer people exist.

Karen diversity isn’t forced people just exist. Also it was talked about so naturally there was noting forced about it! Unnecessary! Bro do you know how excited I was to see queer people like me on the big screen!!! Good representation is always necessary! Also Taika was working hard. Working hard to give us the queer rep we want and deserve.

Ableism in the Defenders Saga

Something that I noticed while watching the NMCU shows are how differently Matt gets treated from Jessica, Luke and Danny. Neither Jessica or Luke want to be vigilantes. Jessica has to be persuaded by Trish and Malcolm and Luke has to be pushed by Pops and Claire. Even then they both only do it when it becomes clear that by not acting people will get hurt/raped/killed. I don’t really have any intrest in Danny and haven’t watched much of his show but from what I understand his friends are pretty supportive of him too.

Then theres Matt. Literally all of his friends have tried to get him to stop and given him shit for trying to help people. Even Claire says she can’t date him because of Daredevil then turns around and dates Luke. Now Claire can date whoever she wants and I don’t ship Matt/Claire (NurseDevil???) but just purely from that standpoint its pretty hypocritical. The only difference I can think of between all of them is Matt’s disability. As a disabled person myself I can confidently say that abled people get incredibly uncomfortable when the people they think are helpless/need protection are not helpless and able to stand up for themselves. So, a disabled person who goes out and protects others? Unthinkable. 

But Phoenix! You cry, Jessica, Luke and Danny all have physical enhancements/powers that Matt doesn't have! Don’t they all have valid concerns? Well let’s take a look at Frank. He has 0 powers and yet all his friends support him going out and doing what he does and when they do argue its about his penchant for maximum casualties or trying to get him to stop meddling in government business, not out of fear for his safety. Matt is just as competent, if not more so, then Frank is. I mean sure his hand to hand is good but the only way he beats Matt is with guns. Hell Matt even beats Danny, the guy who was trained since childhood to be a master martial artist and supposedly fought a dragon. 

So really the only reason I can see for people to give Matt shit for his activities is ableism and seeing as Foggy says some incredibly ableist shit I don’t think this theory is that far fetched.

Season 3 and Matt’s Fake Death

I know a lot of people say that Matt was an asshole at the beginning of season 3 for not telling Foggy and Karen that he was alive after Midland Circle. When I first watched it I thought that too but now not so much. 

Let’s set the context. The beginning of TD makes it clear that Karen and Foggy aren’t talking to Matt after season 2. Which means that Matt has been totally alone for months. Not only that but they both said some really shitty things to him during and after the Castle trial. 

Then he finds out that The Hand is back and they’re going to destroy New York City. He does what he has to and dawns the suit again. He brings in Foggy and Karen to keep them safe and they give him nothing but shit for “relapsing” (I have Thoughts™ about them comparing DD to an addiction but thats for another post) despite the fact that he’s trying to save lives.

So of course he doesn’t tell them he’s alive. For the last idk six months they’ve done nothing but abandon and belittle him because of Daredevil. At the beginning of season 3 he says that Matt Murdock is dead and only Daredevil (the part of him that his friends hate) remains. Do you really blame him for letting them think he’s dead?

Korg is not GAY!!No Eternal was gay and in the printed issues I collect never will be. Btw fat man can’t tie his shoes much less be a superhero. This is ridiculous already. Make up your own stories and contaminate those characters. Don’t destroy something that will never be gay! You can’t change a written story for moneys liking. I worked with a gay captain for 11 yrs has nothing to do with pro or anti anything!!! end image discription}

I love this one just because of how wrong it is. A list of canon queer characters from marvel comics: Valkyrie, Korg, Maria Hill, Ayo, Aaron Fisher (Captain America of the railways), William Kaplan (Wiccan), Theodor Altman (Hulkling), Arnie Roth (Steve Roger’s best friend from the 40s and one of the the inspirations for Movie!Bucky), Tony Stark (never officially says but it is heavily implied, here is a good post on it) Yelena Belova, and those are just the 10 I can think of off the top of my head. In fact marvel has a comic called “Marvel Voices: Pride” that is all short comics about many of its queer and trans super heroes!  

Also, the thing about Disney making stuff queer for the money really bugs me because its literally the exact opposite. Marvel is straight washing their characters for the movies because they’re afraid it won’t sell otherwise. Money and capitalism is why it is taking so long for us to get the good queer rep we want/need.

The overall story was all over the place because of the constant narrative cut scenes, and with propaganda littered throughout the whole movie of LBGTQ+ness it is another reminder of how superheros can’t just be super.

The different representations of the other gods was pretty sad of 2022, and with the whole conflict of the movie being about the “god butcher’ he should have left more of a lasting impression on the characters in the movie. Instead to me all i got was “boggie man” and that was a bit of a downer compared to other more well developed characters. If the original Norse mythology is on your radar there were a couple of fun quips referencing them. However, your beloved characters from Thor Ragnarok end up being drivers for the problems in this world and supporting it, and that is not my cup of tea. end image description}

Manipulation of Ableism in Marvel’s Daredevil

Ok so imo Daredevil as a show’s best moments are when Matt is manipulating other peoples ableist attitudes/assumptions about him to get shit done. I think one of my favorite examples of this is when *Spoilers for season 2* he and Electra are at the gala to get information on the Hand. Matt purposefully spills wine on the accountant(?) dude to get him in the bathroom and away from everyone else. He knows that he won’t get in trouble for it because he’s just a blameless blind dude right /s. Later in that same episode when he and Elektra need to make an escape and they are able to do that because no one sees him as a threat because of his disability. He can’t possibly be the one to trip the alarm /s. I love all of this because that operation was only successful because of that. An abled person would have had a much harder time with it. 

Another things I love about scene when they are escaping is that when the guard rips off Matt’s glasses and shines a light in his eyes (which is hella rude) the look on Matt’s face is amazing. You can just tell he’s thinking well I know we need to do this to go free but but now I am going to be reduced to my disability. This man is going to judge me solely off of that and noting else and I hate that. And honestly? Mood. There have been times when someone finds out I’m autistic and immediately start to talk to me as if I’m 5 years old instead of almost 20. I had an english teacher in high school insinuate that I shouldn’t be in her advanced class because I’m dyslexic. It’s so frustrating! I think Charlie Cox shows that really really well in that scene. 

There are a bunch of other examples of this especially in season 3 and its just so great. Its a mechanism for survival in a world not built for disabled people but at the same time you can see how much peoples attitudes and assumptions effect Matt. You can see just how angry and annoyed he is and its such a quintessentially disabled experience. IDK I just have a lot of feelings about it.

She Hunk Predictions

Ok so this isn’t as much a prediction as just some funny things I want to happen. Matt just... doesn’t know what the Hunk actually is. No one told him what he looks like. So basically all he knows is the guys strong. He just genuinely thinks the Hulk is just a really big strong dude that occasionally breaks shit. 

One day he’s in court and pandemonium breaks out and Matts just confused because why has my opposing council just grown like... two feet taller??? Everyones panicking because there is a Hulk in the courtroom. He gets his client to tell him whats going on and they’re like “she just turned big and green” I want Matt to just staunchly disbelieve that hulks are green. Like I want that be be a running gag in the show that Matt just thinks people are fucking with him. He can hear that they’re telling the truth but he’s just like no, theres no way. He thinks either his senses are fucked up or people have found a way to lie to him. It doesn't matter how many times Jen tells him she's green he just won’t believe it.

Also I need Jen to 100% know who Matt is because, like Deadpool, she can break the fourth wall. But Matt doesn’t know that she knows till she mentions it and he just freaks out because holy shit who spilled. He tries to lie about it and she's just like sure dude.

Jen walking into the court house and the camera pans to Matt who is opposing council. The frame freezes and Jen narrates “This is Matt Murdock. He is a damn good lawyer from Hell’s Kitchen. Matt lives and breaths justice so much that he willingly goes out at night dressed in red leather (I know kinky right?) to beat up bad guys. I am not like Matt Murdock. I just wanna help by being a lawyer. But now I have to be a super hero” (cuz if I understand correctly she is kind of resistant to being a super hero at first?)   

Kind of in tandem to the last part I need Jen to break the four wall around Matt and Matt to just be... so confused. Who is she talking to??? Is someone there? Are they disguised from my senses? What is going on?!?!

Honestly I just want Jen to aggressively befriend Matt who is just literally perplexed the entire time. I feel like they could have such a good dynamic! 

(lol sorry if this is all a little disjointed, its all from different conversations I’ve had with a friend that I tried to condense into one post. Also @marvelvibess  may have come with some of this stuff so credit to them)
