South Park Season 23 âBoard Girlsâ Review (TLDR below)
To put it simply, I have very mixed feelings about this episode. The plot wasnât boring or overly offensive, but I think the message Trey and Matt were trying to convey was executed poorly, which is why it angered so many people. South Park episodes that tackle real life issues always have some kind of underlying theme that carries the episode, and for the most part you can quickly and easily tell what that message is (think back to Kyleâs old âI learned something todayâ speech). But Board Girls just feels very different from that. Itâs a lot harder to tell what the creators were trying to get at, and figuring out their intentions requires a lot more critical thinking than usual.
Iâve looked at lots of articles on the episode just to get a glimpse at how the public responded to Board Girls. Long story short: not very good. Some trans people and transgender advocates felt that the episode was very insulting and openly transphobic, wether intentionally or not. And then thereâs the edgy red necks who think the creators hate trans people and send praise to them because of it.
What do I think? Well, Trey and Matt consistently keep a âcommon senseâ point of view which means they never stray too far to either side on political/societal issues, instead poking fun at both sides and presenting their own idea. This rule does apply to Board Girls, itâs just significantly harder to tell. What they were trying to say was that trans people definitely exist and deserve respect, however there are people who fake the identity just to get into womenâs sports to win them. I know this because 1) Itâs said on multiple occasions that Heather Swanson isnât a typical trans person, declaring that there are real trans people that exist and should be respected and 2) PC Principle and Strong Woman knew what was going on when usually they would be all for defending trans people.
Basically, the theme is that some people abuse the acceptance of certain minorities and pretend to be apart of that group to target individuals, and we shouldnât be afraid to call BS on those people just because weâre scared of being transphobic. Our protagonists of the day, PC Principal and Strong Woman, learn by the end of the episode that itâs okay to pick the bad apples out of the bunch, because obviously that athlete was just trying to get back at his girlfriend and is not trans. The same thing happened in the episode âthe cissyâ where Cartman pretends to use the girls bathroom to his own advantage (although The Cissy had the same message, it was executed much better than Board Girls). It was easier to tell that the transgender bathroom situation isnât an actually severe issue because the butt of the joke was a character we already know to be an asshole, Cartman. Also, the Lorde part of the episode was great with conveying the message metaphorically.
I think they were also trying to say that even though Transgenderism is a real psychological phenomenon and gender and sex are separate concepts, we need to understand that certain aspects even with surgery can not be changed and we shouldnât ignore biology. Itâs okay to point out that trans women do have natural advantages in sports that arenât fair to compete against with cis women.
So arguably you could say that Board Girls was a transphobic episode, but it most certainly wasnât on purpose. Trey and Matt proved with The Cissy that their view on transgender people is very positive, because the way transphobes view trans people was the butt of the joke, not the actual trans people. đ
One thing that I think would be really cool to add in the future is a trans student in the school. Oh man, I certainly get ripped on for being trans in school by my homies, but itâs always good-hearted. Trey and Matt could do the same here! Also, we have yet to see an actual trans guy in the series, and it would be super cool to see, especially being a trans guy myself! Trey, add in some actual trans people, not just fakers! I would love to see a trans character in the series! đłď¸ââ§ď¸
TLDR: Board Girls is misunderstood, Trey and Matt are not transphobic but they did a crap job at showing their intentions this episode đ
This is 100% intended lmao đ¤Ł
If it isnât gay do they really need to be that close???

Deadass it looks like theyâre about to kiss in this one
