King Harald returns to Kattegat

Vikings Valhalla: Season 1 Episode 1

 Warning- Spoilers!

Disclaimer: This is just my opinion on the series. I do not mean to cause offense to anyone. I do like to look at the history behind the time period. I sincerely do not mean to cause offense or upset anyone.

Costuming: I liked the costuming so far. Nothing seemed to far fetched. The background characters had pretty plausible outfits. I really liked what they put the Greenlanders in.

Characters: I like the sibling bond between Leif and Freydis. I look forward to seeing more of it.

Harald Sigurdsson is a hottie with a body! He’s channeling that Harald Finehair energy with that top knot. I’m pretty sure King Harald would be rolling in his grave if he found out his descendants were Christians. 

King Canute: aka my new fav. I guess I am a sucker for dark haired, deep voiced kings.

Estrid Haakon- She takes me out of the show, in my opinion. I want to know how she got to this position of power.  Did she marry into it? It will be interesting how the show explains it. The Norse were heavily involved in the slave trade with the Muslims. In this time period, people from across Europe, Asia, and Africa could be slaves. They literally shows slaves in the first few minutes of the first episode. I just hope the shows gives a good back story for Jarl Haakon on how she got to power.

King Aethelred II: I hope he is not a one-dimension villain or a Ecbert copycat.

History:

 St. Brigid Massacre did occur in 1002. 

Slavery is still occurring in this time period. In the Doomsday Book, about 10% of England’s population were slaves (c. 1086).

Jarl Haakon was a real man from c. 937-995. Estrid Haakon is apparently a purely fictional character.

King Canute becomes king of England as King Cnut. I can’t wait to see him and Emma of Normandy!

I really like the conflict of Christians V. Pagans. I hope they do not make Christians the ‘bad guys’ or overly favor the the Norse religion, and leave it up to interpretation.

The battle was hard-fought, hard-won, just not for King Harald’s men. They bring him in chains to have an audience with the queen who laid him low. He sits on hands and knees before the wooden throne, waiting to learn what will become of him and his fighters. Yours is a face Harald has not looked upon in many years, and he cannot hide his surprise when you sit before him —a lone queen widowed many years ago and a woman he once, no still, loved. You cannot let him go without punishment. It would risk the faith your people have in you as their ruler. But not all punishments need be carried out publicly. Free of his shackles, Harald’s kiss is just how you remember, fervent and desperate. His hands are rougher though, and there are more scars on his chest and arms than had been in the past. He lets you push him back to the bed and climb atop him, but the feel of something soft wrapping around his wrists, binding them so he cannot touch you. Though one thing he loves most is the forest after it’s rained, the scent of the damp earth, the clean air, the droplets of water falling from the canopy above —the way you smile back at him, leading him by the hand to a place discovered when you were both younger and more reckless. To him, you could be a goddess of the forest, splayed out with leaves and twigs caught in your hair. And if you are, then he will worship you with body and words and relish the way you cling to him, murmuring his name as a forbidden prayer. Harald Finehair loves the lingering scent of the forest and rain in your hair as he presses his lips to your temple in the warmth of your shared bed, bidding you goodnight as he holds you tight.

Blood: How messy are they willing to get when it comes to their darling?

He will never hurt you (unless your into that). You are to be protected above all others!  he has no trouble killing any man that may (or may not)  pose a threat to you.

Exposed: How much of their heart do they bare to their darling? How vulnerable are they when it comes to their darling?

He’s pretty much an open book. He goes to you to vent and express his worries. To him you are his soulmate, and don’t soulmates share everything?

Thinking about how harald finehair escaped from prison despite being chained up and guarded not once but twice, one of those times disappearing in the middle of a hostile army camp and the other time simultaneously coordinating astrid’s kidnapping, and on another occasion he was imprisoned he somehow managed to make himself king of norway. I don’t like it but I respect it.

Character thing - Sigurd please if you don’t mind

i totally don’t! (actually thank you for giving me the oppertunity to talk about this boy)

favorite thing about them

sigurd is very different from his brothers in SO many regards. he is romantic, he plays the oud and he is apparently far more empathetic or at least capable of reading a person? like hvitserk and ubbe have stepped on ivar’s toes by accident. sigurd knew ivar’s insecurities. he didn’t step on ivar’s toes as much as he really took aim. and yeah that kind of means that you have to be able to think from the perspective of someone else. i do not believe that sigurd was right with the conclusions he drew, but that’s another story

least favorite thing about them

i do think sigurd is fairly capable of feeling situations, but he is a little too simplistic in his conclusions of them. which i think is a testament to his youth. he is also very idealistic. it’s hard for me to say that i really dislike that about him as a character because i think this actually creates tension and makes him interesting, but it would be the thing i would dislike as a person

favorite line

im fairly bad at remembering lines, but i think you know in general all he says to ivar is just very clear cut. this boy knew how to form the perfect sentences to piss ivar off and in that sense they are very beautiful.

brOTP favorite platonic relationship

this will be an unpopular opinion, but actually ivar and sigurd are very interesting because they mirror each other to some extend and then are very different in other regards. they both spoiled brats, far more so than ubbe and hvitserk, and at the same time they have really different. ivar adores his parents, sigurd resents both. they are both quite sensitive. i would not say they are good for each other, but they are interesting in regards to each other.

alternative, hvitserk and sigurd both carry the “i dislike my parents” - banner and  i think some sort of bonding must’ve happened there, even if not on screen.

OTP favorite romantic relationship

canon is pretty bleak, so let’s go to history. blaeja and sigurd is just a very good concept because it actually channels a lot of sigurd’s simplistic views, while also playing on his strengths. and i just for one would’ve loved to see that happen.

random headcanon

two things: sigurd loved his mother dearly and this is the very reason for his strong reaction and anger. he tries to tell himself that he hates her, but it doesn’t make it easier for him. he went also with the idea that his mother didn’t love him bc it was far easier to accept this than the idea that she loved him, but was just incapable of giving him the love he needed or wanted.

sigurd plays the oud because it’s something that no one else in his family does. he chose it specifically because it’s not associated with ragnar in anyway. it was his way of choosing his own path.

unpopular opinion

turning sigurd into this rage demon who hated ivar and just went against him for no reason is a very simple way of looking at a very complicated toxic family dynamic. the problem is not solved here by saying that ivar was right or that sigurd was right. aslaug should’ve separated them. it shouldn’t be normal for two brothers to just always fight each other and for one of them to get so angry as to try and attempt to kill the other. a lot of shit went down before we even got to see them as young adults and discussing who is in right or more problematic does not deal with the issue itself. sigurd should’ve gone with björn as well. he shouldn’t have been in the situation he was and this is one thing i actually blame aslaug for cause damn… why did she let it go so far?

Character Thoughts 02: Judith

Does anyone else hate everything the character Judith did on Vikings? Cheats on her husband, neglects her child, KILLS HER SON! I think it would of been more interesting if Hirst included actual history in his show. He should of given Aethelwulf a love story with Osburh and had children by her , and then have her tragically die in childbirth. Echbert needs an alliance with Northumbira  so he still has Aethewulf marry Judith.

I feel like it would of been more interesting if Alfred being illegitimate was kept a secret and Echbert found out and took advantage of it. 

Another way it could or gone was the historical route and have Judith marry her stepson, Aethelbald. That could bring drama to the show.

- Then again I am a Christian so it could just be my bias against how Hirst wrote the show. Anyone’s thoughts?

Being Married to Harald Finehair Headcanons

-After you are married there is a huge celebration and Harald is as boisterous as ever, declaring that this is the most joyful he has ever been.

-Having the respect of everyone under Harald’s rule the minute you two are married.

-Harald’s kisses usually being joyful and wild, with him often smiling into the kiss. He holds your face in one hand and wraps his other arm around your body, pulling you tightly against his.

-Simply making eye contact with him from across the hall and knowing he wishes to have you by his side. As you make your way over to him he holds out his arm to place it over your shoulders once you are next to him.

-Him having you train with him so that he knows you can hold your own against any threat. 

-Him seeing you as someone strong enough and with great ability to lead. So, when he goes off raiding he puts his trust in you to watch over his kingdom while he is gone.

-Seeing him off at the docks when he goes raiding and making him promise to come home. He does, just before giving you a quick kiss and boarding his boat.

-When he returns from raiding you are the first person he greets on the dock. He pulls you quickly into his arms and pressing a hungry kiss to your lips before leaning his forehead against yours. Regardless of how the raid went seeing you brings a smile to his face.

-Him preferring for you to sleep with your head on his chest, as he wraps his arm around your shoulders. He lulls to sleep by softly running his hands over your arm.

-Harald pressing his forehead to yours, your hand on his cheek. He whispers to you telling you he loves you, telling you that you are his world.

History: Alfred was the son of Æthelwulf and Osburh. Æthelwulf took Alfred to Rome not once but twice, because he loved him more than any of his other sons. He brought Judith (daughter of Charles, King of Franks) home and wanted her to be Queen, but she was not allowed to be called Queen, but King's wife. After his death, his son Æthelred ruled, before dying in battle, and Alfred became King, eventually marrying Ealhswith, a noblewoman from Mercia.

Michael Hirst: So okay, Alfred isn't the son of Æthelwulf. Osburh doesn't exist. He's the son of Judith, who is the daughter of King Ælla of Northumbria, and the former monk/sometimes Viking Athelstan. He's not Aethelwulf's favorite. Æthelwulf hesitantly takes him and eventually accepts Alfred as his son. Oh and Æthelwulf doesn't die in battle. A bee does it, and Æthelred isn't King, either. Alfred is King now, and even though Æthelred swears he won't ever turn against his brother again, Queen Judith kills him. Oh and Alfred married Elsewith, but because he doesn't talk to her every five minutes, she sleeps with Bjorn Ironside, first. Oh and she's not Mercian. She is the daughter of his mother's cousin, instead. That's historical right?

I: Ideals: What kind of future do they have in mind for/with their darling?

- Ruling Kattegat by his side as queen. As long as your by his side he truly doesn’t need anything else.

V:  Vice: What weakness can their darling exploit in order to escape?

- It is capable to get into his head and convince you truly love him and only him. It may take years, especially if you were kidnapped. He never felt normal and deserving of a normal relationship. If you manage to get through his wall, you’ll see a loving caring side of Ivar, but by that time would you really want to leave?

A: Affection. How do they show their love and affection? How intense would it get?

- At first it through soft looks and little gifts. He can’t articulate what you mean to him in the beginning. Even compliments come out wrong. Only when he thinks your asleep will he cling against your body kissing your forehead, and whisper sweet nothings in your ear. 

- As time goes by he’ll leave lingering touches on your body, compliment in front of others, and show you off. It’s a steady and constant affection, only getting bloody and intense when another man tries to get inbetween the two of you.

R:  Regret: Would they ever feel guilty about abducting their darling? Would they ever let their darling go?

- No. He’s so far gone in love, why on earth for he feel better for taking you away. Your better off with him. Your friends and family didn’t truly love and care for you like he does. Only he can provide the life you deserve.

- The only way your leaving him is in death. Letting you go is never an option.
