Do you have any tips on writing characters that are different from each other? In Story Thieves especially, the main cast are so naturally distinct. How do you do it?
Thank you! Some of this is practice, as a lot of my characters sounded the same when I first started out, so I hope I've gotten a little better at it since then. But in terms of advice, I'd say to try working through the characters before you start writing them, especially their motivations and how they're going to grow or change to try to reach their goals. Personality for me often comes from who they are and where they came from, what sorts of things they've had to do to get by, etc.
So for Story Thieves characters, Bethany not only comes from two worlds (so her personality includes aspects of both), but when we first meet her, she's been forced to hide both who she is and that she's sneaking into books every night from her mom, so that's made her slow to trust or take chances.
Owen, meanwhile, hasn't had to deal with any of that, and has been shaped by the books he's read to think, just as an example, that taking risks will always pay off, to the point he doesn't think about consquences.
Charm's raging at the world (and Dr. Verity) for the accident that took her family from her, which has made her both really cynical, and very focused on stopping Verity. And Kiel had a rough early life so had to fake confidence just to get by, and it takes him awhile to realize he doesn't need that anymore now that he's found a family of his own.
