Tangerine-brooks - The Kind Of Stuff You'd Normally Forget - Tumblr Blog
most big brother energy jaime lannister ever exuded is when he comes to tyrion's rescue and instead of thanking him tyrion goes "LMAO you lost a hand i lost a nose we're disabled bros" and starts wheezing and laughing hysterically while jaime stands there like

or maybe i'll just let you die
i hate it HATE IT so much when asoiaf fans go "grrm finish the fucking books already" and "lmao we'll never get twow" and "what if grrm dies and doesn't finish the story" and if i see this shit one more time i'll start biting people, because SHUT UP LET HIM COOK let him take his time!! this is so mean-spirited like here's the author that gave us so so many wonderful heartwrenshing captivating profoundly human stories but instead of being supportive and grateful you bitch and moan about how long it takes him to write more???
people on tumblr make such long post that analyze every word in these books, because literally every word is so thought-out it's either a foreshadowing or a subtle but real reflection of the pov character's constantly evolving inner life or has some otherwise deeper meaning to it; and the same thoughtfulness goes for every chapter, every plot point, every character interaction! and then the same people wonder why it takes grrm so long to write it?? seriously??
and if you ever attempted to write anything real and sincere you know that it doesn't come easy. and all the emotional complexity and depths that make characters feel so human and their struggles so real peaking at "ned loves my hair" and "i dreamed of you" and "he wondered what it's like to have a home" and every line that is so simple but so sharp and raw it makes me wanna pull my hair scream cry sob throw up - none of it comes easy!! it takes time and effort and emotional work to write like this! of course it takes long!
not to mention that grrm's in his seventies and likely has some health issues that take time and energy to manage and that he doesn't mention publically because why would he? ALSO when you get older you tend to get tired more easily! and need more time to rest! like, that's why people usually retire in their sixties. but grrm keeps working! ALSO have you never experienced a burn out or a creative block after years of working on the same thing??
ALSO one of asoiaf's main theme is that any person in any circumstances deserves empathy and understanding!!
so while we all are waiting for next books it's so important to show our amazing beloved author respect and support and gratitude! all say thank you, thank you george rr martin and please take care and take your time!!
i thought cersei & jaime /catherine & heatcliff parallel was intentional on grrm's side?
but yeah rip cersei you would've been sooo crazy about this book
A shame Cersei Lannister can't get her hands on a copy of Wuthering Heights because she would be so unwell about that book
lannister boys in asos are so funny genre-wise. tyrion is in his greek tragedy shakespeare play kendall roy succession richard lll frankenstein cain and abel abraham and isaac doomed from the start kind of narrative meanwhile jaime is on his coming of age roadtrip with buddycop enemies to lovers romance. a tragic hero and a teenage boy in his thirties.

THOSE ARE REALLY GOOD SPIN-OFF IDEAS
bad asoiaf spin-off ideas
• robert baratheon’s small council in the style of parks and recreation
• lannister family sitcom in the style of arrested development
• hot pie in harrenhal in the style of the bear
the reason why got!lannisters would absolutely eat the greens is that when greens commit crimes they spiral into twenty stages of religious guilt and suicidal urges and think "i am terrible and unlovable and past forgiveness, and i dishonored myself, and i need to be put down like a bad bad dog, and gods hate me, and when does this misery end and i need kill myself, but death is a fate too kind for someone like me and etc. etc."
when lannisters commit crimes they be smug about it. they think "in my hot girl era"
There’s something so poetically evil about Sansa embodying everything the realm wants a proper lady to be and then them all hating her for it. She cares about knights and songs, sewing and pretty dresses. And she’s scorned for it, naïve little girl who isn’t equipped to deal with the horrors of life. Because they don’t prepare women for the horrors of life despite the fact that they have to live in the same reality as all of the terrible deeds. Sansa embodies everything a young lady is supposed to and it ruins her life. The same way women are meant to bear heirs but they don’t tell them beforehand how it happens. It’s this sick fetishization of an ideal of women that they can never truly achieve because life isn’t ideal. Sansa is the picture of what they want women to be and it can never be enough still.
i liked show brienne for the most part for what she was (staunch, loyal, cautious) but upon reading the books it occurred to me just how necessary brienne’s endearing awkwardness, bravery, and hopefulness is in a world as grim and at times hopeless as asoiaf. she brings such light onto every page and you see it through her unrelenting kindness and her striving to see the good in people no matter what. instance after instance she proves it is possible to uphold the sanctity of knighthood and be a protector while still being empathetic and kindhearted and staying true to one’s word, which is something formal organisations such as the kingsguard no longer/do not subscribe to.

brienne deserved so much better than her show portrayal, which seems to misunderstand that bri is not interesting simply because she’s a female knight, or because of her appearance, or the cruel things she has suffered as a result of both of these, it is the fact that despite all of these things she is still gentle and idealistic and kindhearted and romantic. brienne reconciles traits that are considered to be antithetical in westerosi society. she does not have to be a beautiful maid to dream of love and enchantment, and she can dream of these things whilst also being an incredibly capable knight. she’s open minded and defies expectations; she does not have to adhere to a strictly ‘masculine’ way of thinking in order to be strong. and then the show had her insult jaime by saying he was ‘acting like a woman’
fundamentally cannot stomach a lot of asoiaf character discourse because like. I love all of these characters even the terrible inexcusable ones and the ones who love so deep and so raw that they are their own doom and the ones who are so tangled up that every choice they make in the narrative is the wrong one. noticing more and more that people are evaluating a lot of the decisions that characters make like theyre math equations as if every single one of these people is not deeply sick in the head. if you dont love all of these characters why are you here reading these books
I am having thoughts about Bran, Hodor, and skinchanging that I must write down now, while they're still fresh.
There's a whole line of fandom that theorizes that in TWOW Bran is going to step up his violation of skinchanging no-nos by doing sex stuff (rape) via Summer. Aside from Bran not having been taught skinchanging in any traditional way, (so he wouldn't know the rules,) and being 10, it's always coming from that part of fandom that hates Bran (and the other main characters).
So here's the thing. Skinchanging into another person is established as taboo in the prologue of ADWD specifically so the reader can know exactly how horrible it is for Bran to do this to Hodor. Skinchanging in this story opens the door for there to be a whole new and particularly horrifying breach of agency and consent that has nothing to do with sex.
It's touched on in other stories, and rape happens a lot in asoiaf, but skinchanging into another person, especially without their consent or being able to consent, is asking the audience a lot more than rape does.
Bran's use of Hodor is horrifying. Based on what's in the books, warging with Summer is totally different from skinchanging with Hodor. Humans and wolves or dogs can bond and the experience seems to be consenting or exhilarating for the pair. Hodor is unable to express himself, being cut off from language, and so it makes it very easy for Bran to dehumanize Hodor in the earlier books. - Here I am going to note that Bran is far from the only character to dehumanize Hodor. The only character I can think of who makes a point of Hodor's personhood is Maester Luwin.
And again, Bran is ten years old, depressed, and without any parental figures to guide him anymore. Meera and Bloodraven are the closest he has to authority figures. Bloodraven doesn't seem to care about how Bran treats Hodor, not that there was much opportunity for that kind of interaction in the one chapter we have where he's training Bran. And Meera is technically subordinate to Bran due to their society (class and gender). Not to mention that she's distracted by Jojen's condition and that Bran hasn't been broadcasting what he's doing to Hodor.
The question of mind control more often comes up in sci-fi, which is where GRRM comes from as a writer. And learning that controling someone like this, taking away their agency and using them because he's upset and jealous about his disability, is so so horrible, is Bran's dark night of the soul. It's his villain arc. Learning that breaching someone's consent and autonomy, refusing them dignity or humanity, and perceiving them as lesser because of a disability, is evil, is so important. (And connects to the main enemy of the story, using the bodies of the unconsenting dead to do their bidding to destroy all life.)
It's also particularly poignant because Bran himself is diminished and dehumanized because of his disability, and he can talk and express himself and unlike Hodor, he can't be used like a mule.
