December Is Almost Upon Us, And With That John Wick's 31 Day Challenge. A Challenge I Failed Miserably

December is almost upon us, and with that John Wick's 31 day challenge. A challenge I failed miserably last year, and, as I was preparing for it I realized I wanted to give it my personal spin, so be ready for the 31 ttrpgs I GM'd this year!

I suppose what annoys me about tabletop RPGs whose primary pitch is “puts the story first!” is that it fundamentally misunderstands the relationship between the rules and the narrative. The defining feature of tabletop RPGs is that interpreting the outcomes of the rules produces a story, and in this sense, all tabletop RPGs “put the story first” – the idea that some tabletop RPGs are About Stories and some tabletop RPGs are Not About Stories is a false dichotomy.

The trouble is that game rules are opinionated about the kinds of story they want to produce, and folks end up conflating “this game’s rules want to produce a different kind of story from the one that I want to tell” with “this game’s rules don’t produce stories at all”, which is not a constructive way to frame things; keep up with that line of thinking and you’re on a short road to becoming one of those dogmatic weirdos who thinks there’s exactly one correct way to pretend to be an elf.

Fanart in the form of an old movie poster for the fake movie Goncharov. It features the titular character, a pale, mustachioed man dressed in a nice gray suit and overcoat. He sits in a plush arm chair, with a gun in one hand and a pocket-watch in the other, and a red scarf lying across his knees. There are bloodstains on his clothing, and he is smiling, though only part of his face can be seen.

The steady ticking of the broken-faced watch sliced the moment into ever-smaller fragments of time - every one a possibility becoming past. "Please," Andrey said, his voice like the first crack splintering the ice on a wintry river. - the Goncharov novelisation (1976). Novelisations of popular movies are usually garbage, but perhaps because it was released three whole years after the movie, the Goncharov pulp novel is unexpectedly good - though it's hard to get ahold of these days, since it was only sold in newspaper kiosks back in the day. A copy in good condition can run you several hundred dollars these days. (hello I am several days late to the party but I'm joining in the Goncharov-posting)

INFINITY (ENG -> ITA)

#31daycharacterchallenge

Infinity has been my first 2D20 game, and, while at first I was almost overwhelmed by the sheer crunch of the game, it was also the game that sparked my interest in the system, and it's been interesting to see its evolution from there to Dune. I think the setting's complexity and depth of detail somehow influenced its design, and the ensuing granularity feels heavy on one side, but in line with the environment the characters move in. And that's before even taking into account the Wilderness of Mirrors, the game's factions plotting for their own gain, that reflects on the players. The character creation uses a tables-galore lifepath system where you can go full random, or full choice. Honestly, the characters I made relying completely on chance turned out more compelling than the ones I made without rolling.

Like Khurshid, a Tohaa born from the hyper-elite of an Errant ship that served in the Fenrig Imperative. They grew with a triad of gossipers and human culture nerds, met during their internship at the Yorua Theatre. One of them, though, turned out to be a deviant, and, accepting a position within the Clipsos, broke the triad. Khurshid wallowed into an administrative job, that didn't turn out great, but pushed them to get back into theatre, where they performed for a few years, but didn't amount to much. Meeting the one who broke their childhood triad gave the final blow to their acting career, but at least they kept in touch, and Khurshid returned to work in administration. An attack of the Combined Army on their world put a quick end to that career as well, but helped them find their true vocation. For the last 7 years, Khurshid has been a distinguished field officer in an Ectros regiment.

On a Moonless Night

[English first, poi in italiano]

A nice and tight game, perfect for no-prep one-shots. The players take the role of early 20th Century detectives armed with the light of reason, who, brought together by an event in their lives, happen upon a mystery that reeks of the supernatural, and stake their reputation on getting to the bottom of it, and reveal it for what it really is: a completely mundane situation, camouflaged by the trappings of myth and superstition. The Terror they're about to witness, though, might not agree with them. The game runs on a well defined structure, that guides the Investigators and their Host through a nerve-wracking delve into the Lair, determined to get to the bottom of it at any cost. The dice pool system is as simple as it is evocative, and the game's phases are neatly defined to highlight the moment. I was afraid the Climax phase would be difficult to run, but it flowed smoothly and dynamically, the only change I felt the need to make, though, was giving the Investigators a Clue when they let the Terror consume them on a failed Reaction.

On a Moonless Night.

The Lego Movie is something that only happens once in life because you cannot recreate the experience of being dragged to "stupid marketing ploy to sell plastic bricks to 5 year olds" and 90 minutes later come out of "surreal cosmic horror comedy about the existential dread of artistic expression and the meaning of free will with commentary on capitalist oligarchy. To sell plastic bricks to 5 year olds."
