How to spot an AI grifter

OOOH BOY So, you know how it has become fashionable to generate pics by typing a prompt into an art theft program that consumed tons of hard work done by human artists, with no financial compensation? Some of you are capable of compassion and might wanna boycott people doing that, and especially companies that use such pics because they want to avoid paying artists (as if we haven't been starving already). However, AI has become pretty good at imitation, and not all people disclose using it, it's not enough to just look for a weird amount of fingers anymore. How to not fall for it? Here's a good example of how the art itself can be not too suspicious, but when you look at someones gallery as a whole, you can see that they're using an AI generator. DISCLAIMER! All those traits separately don't necessarily point to a person being an AI grifter, but their combination leaves me no doubt!

How To Spot An AI Grifter

The most suspicious thing about this image is, I guess, the proportions being a bit wonky and the gold nuggets being placed chaotically, without the feeling of intent, but these are not clear signs. Even the hands seem fine! However, at this point I'm suspicious of any artstyle that's overly smooth and impressive at a first glance. Let's take a look at shubmedea's gallery on ArtStation! 1) First of all, I want to note the artstyle inconsistency. Of course, some people can draw in several styles, but the sheer amount of different ways of rendering raises suspicion

How To Spot An AI Grifter

This style specifically is very popular among AI prompters, which made me more determined to investigate

How To Spot An AI Grifter

2) The date of the first post. The account has only existed for 8 months, and it's already chuck-full of fancy looking fully rendered images. AI is a recent trend, so people who pump out pretty looking stuff and don't have any good artworks older than 1 year are extra suspicious.

How To Spot An AI Grifter

3) The amount of posts per day. No human being is able to produce 8 pictures like this in one day. Of course, they can be posting a backlog of art from another platform, right? Let's give them some benefit of the doubt and keep looking!

How To Spot An AI Grifter

4) The further down I scroll, the wonkier some images get on a closer inspection, and not like a human artist making a mistake. AI has its own specific ways of fucking up. It got better now, even at hands, but if you look at old images, you can notice things like these. The eye especially is not a mistake a person with the level of skill required for this shading would make

5) Some grifters just can't pick the best looking image out of the ones spat out by AI, so they post several versions of the same concept. Artists also can explore various compositions for the same idea, but I haven't seen it done at a stage further than a sketch on a scale of a full scene with a background. Usually the artist just does thumbnails for a scene like that, choses their favorite version and renders that. In case of the concept art for outfits, it's usually done on a copy-pasted standing base figure, not on figures in different poses featuring different backgrounds.

How To Spot An AI Grifter

How To Spot An AI Grifter

Here we can see 7 almost identical scenes rendered to completion, no artist would think it's worth their time to render something SEVEN TIMES. They'd rather choose another subject. Same with this girl, why render a very basic portrait like this two times, while slightly changing her facial features and the rendering style

How To Spot An AI Grifter

Another example where you can just clearly imagine a person typing "gas mask anime girl hoodie cat ears neon colors close-up portrait [insert artist name here] style"

How To Spot An AI Grifter

Note the variety of styles for each group of images. Even when spitting out similar gasmask hoodie catgirls, the AI does it with a different lineart thickness, some of them have solid cell shading and some have blending. The color choices are not consistent too, the one in the middle has a muted palette even with the bright-ish green on the hoodie, while the others are more neon. Why would a human artist make such choices when working on a series of portraits? Also, say hi to the wonky hand

How To Spot An AI Grifter

6) Then I scrolled back far enough to encounter THE MOST typical early AI images, with abundance of details that carry no real information. They look pretty, but if you zoom in, nothing looks like it was structured by a human with intent, with thought behind how it works and why it's like this.

7) I understand that some artists are lazy, but most of us name our works publicly as something comprehensive, not like the three examples below. It looks like this person never named any of their "pieces", and never wrote any commentary on them. Again, as a standalone trait it doesn't mean this person isn't a real artist, but in the combination with the facts above, it shows their attitude to their "art". They treat it as nothing more than mass-produced pretty images to gain clout and possibly money.

How To Spot An AI Grifter

8) Their page has no bio, lists no experience, but lists "concept art" as a skill! Also, no links to other social media, apparently it's too much work to post that many images on other socials. Very few artists keep all their art on just one platform.

How To Spot An AI Grifter

I'm out of things to point out about this account, but I'll add things mentioned in another post: 9) Pay attention to teeth, especially in realistic styles and photos. AI fucks them up pretty consistently because it can't count how many there are supposed to be. The line between the front teeth is usually somewhat centered, it can be misplaced on some people irl, but realistic art rarely pictures people with dental anomalies unless it's a part of the design. Usually around 12 teeth are visible from the front (6 on the top, 6 on the bottom), but you can see more depending on how wide the grin/snarl is. Note the difference in shapes and sizes of teeth. Front incisors are usually larger than the second pair of incisors, then there are canines (pointy) and bicuspids (from the front look similar to canines).

How To Spot An AI Grifter

10) unnaturally orderly/smooth fabric folds and skin wrinkles, sometimes too many of them 11) Inconsistency in patterns where consistency should be, take a look at the embroidery on this woman's sari, why would the pattern not be repetitive in a rendering style this realistic? (also what's up with the medallion's string being one-sided lol)

How To Spot An AI Grifter

Thank you for reading this post until the end! It's devastating and stressful to see how people are already losing opportunities and jobs because now any rando can just scrape your entire gallery and generate something similar enough. It's not ok to profit off of the results of someone's hard labor without their consent! Please support human artists in these trying times, and don't engage with AI generated visual content, in 99% cases training data was acquired without the consent of artists, and it's no different than regular old art theft with extra steps. What we need is social pushback against art scrapers and law regulations that protect us from them. There already is a big class lawsuit filed against a major AI company, but its resolution will take time, and just one is not enough. If you want to help the cause, look for local initiatives, contact your lawmakers, sue if you have the money to, spread the info on the matter and boycott the companies that exploit stolen art. #team_human

I know I dont post fallout stuff on here but I am a HUGE fan of the franchise. BUT. I am going to be boycotting this show and I'm going to try to convince others to do the same. Not only are they using ai generated garbage but the show itself might be the least faithful take on the whole fallout franchise I've ever seen. The ghouls look like shit (I've seen cosplayers with better ghoul makeup) the vaults dont look like vaults and my biggest gripe with it is that they got a bunch of small lore things wrong. You can tell from just watching the trailer. I'm not going to list them all but a good example is when the ghoul guy (cant remember his name rn) uses chems in the trailer but they all come in vials? No chem in the fallout series comes in vials like that. You can tell that the writers only knew the plot of fallout but not the LORE of fallout. It has not even come out yet and I can already tell its gonna be another halo live action. Anyways sorry for the rant I just needed to vent.

So Amazon Prime dropped some posters for the Fallout Tv show. Thing is these are all AI made images. They’re so lazy they can’t even pay an artist to draw something.

There’s all kinds of red flags for the Tv show yet so many are still hyped for it.

Armys, don’t use AI

"But why? It’s cute!" It also looks realistic and not everyone will want to use it "because it’s cute." AI can be used to create fake porn, harmful and defamatory deepfakes or to spread misinformation.

"I don’t have those intentions!" By giving AI the prompts you do, you are actively helping train it to look more realistic (among other things), which could in the future help someone who does have the intentions to hurt BTS.

The same goes for AI created songs - you are helping train AI to sound more like them which, again, someone could in the future use to hurt them.

There is no middle ground here. There is no "oh, I only make it create nice stuff!" It doesn’t work that way.

Not to mention, that it’s disrespectful to real artists who spend hours working on their pieces, putting actual energy and love into them.

Not to mention, and now this is just my opinion, creating (half) naked pictures of them is disrespectful to BTS themselves. They always choose when they feel comfortable showing us their bodies (ex. music videos or photoshoots in contract with behind the scenes videos).

Arguing that it’s not really their bodies doesn’t make it better in my opinion. Because how do those fake bodies look? Thin and muscular and perfect, by mainstream beauty standards. We know that some members have struggled with their body image in the past, there’s a strong diet culture in the kpop industry in general and you, thirsting over those perfect, fake bodies are only encouraging it.

Say no to the robot. Enjoy the real BTS and support real artists. Please.

Omfg ai is just gonna destroy us all one day.....unless we do something about it

hey, everybody go into your blog settings right now, go to Visibility, and click prevent third party sharing. Do it for all your blogs.

The fact tumblr is partnering with AI companies fucking blows but at least (at the very fucking least!) we can opt out.

People keep saying AI is so effective and efficient but what good is efficiency if we lose the emotion just for the sake of using something thats taking the work of millions without knowledge or permission beacuse its more "efficient" AI is always help up to become the future but thats not how I see it to me AI is NOT the future it is becoming dangerously concerning and it needs to be stopped

Speak your truth Artists and stay strong! šŸ’–

I will never understand A.I "artists". What do you feel when you get complimented for your "work"? Surely not pride. What is there to be proud of? You did nothing. You didn't plan it, sketch it, spend hours on it and trying to make sure it looked good, or got excited to make something you love You entered a few prompts and the final product that took a few seconds is likely stolen from a real artist, and those that do compliment you usually don't know it's A.I, then backtrack when they find out.

Like how could possibly consider yourself an artist in any way? You're not. Art is created by humans. A.I is just a copy, a weak imitation, a mishmash of things it scoured for online.

A.I art is not art, and A.I. artists are not artists.

The same applies to writing. That, too, is a form of art. You are not a writer. You didn't think of how you want the story to go. You didn't research to make sure what you wanted to write was accurate or to give a character or place a unique name. You didn't spend ages trying to get the scenes and dialogue just right, filled with passion about what you were creating

No, you entered a prompt in a generator that probably stole someone else's writing and claimed it as your own. You're not a writer. You're a fraud.

A.I is worthless. It is not art. It is not human.

Imma say this OwONekko going all "AI isn't bad" Warrior and defending A.I Art that threatens the whole of the art community and not just art CREATIVITY in general is just a slap in the face to all her artistic peers, fans and young artists who look up to to her

A.I has a recent history of stealing art from many artists without concent or permission and uses the stolen art to train their bots but now it's practically being shoved in our faces by all major social media platforms and ruining the creativity

And the fact shes bassiclly saying that "there's nothing you can do" if your art is stolen without concent is bassiclly invalidating the artists who have been stolen from and the fact that she using her self-h@rm to gain sympathy and guilt the audience into siding with her is even more disgusting like the fact that you have to guilt and make your viewers feel bad for being against ai Is such an ass move and she knew that no one would side with her so she disabled the comments the fact that she's defending ai "artists" to pay people for commissions that they never made is scummy as hell and it just goes to show that she doesn't care for the people that are being affected

A.I is not art and people who defend it are just as bad you are such a fucking ignorant bitch if you're telling young artists this BS I'm so tired of bitches like nondi trying to be all woke and shit ai is harmful and shes bassiclly saying thats a good thing....she says she doesn't like drama but she just put herself in drama she could've talked about how ai can also be harmful but NO shes so woke n shit....i hate AI defenders I used to be a fan of her too 😬

Do Better Nondi smh

Deplorable and disgusting. Selling out your users to keep yourself rich. Project yourselves everyone. The IP thieves are coming to the neighbourhood.

What is this about the tumblr staff wanting to sell art data to midjourney?

An ex-colleague of mine mentioned yesterday that there may be contacts between Automattic and midjourney in that direction, but nothing is public yet and I don't have any more info. They probably won't have anything specific to share either, since they left the company weeks ago too. That being said:

I have no reason to doubt my ex-coworker word, they are a trustworthy person.

Tumblr's CEO has been absurdly enthusiastic (comically, even) about AI, and is a big fan of LLMs and 'AI' companies.

A deal with midjourney could solve tumblr financial issues (not the same company, but openAi is paying up to 5 million/year to news companies to use their content as training data... tumblr generates several orders of magnitude more content than any newspaper or any media company and it only would need a 20 to 30 million per year deal to be profitable)

So I don't have any extra info yet, but I'm keeping my ears open.

It's Not Made Of Nothing. It's Made Of All The Things You Mentioned That Have Been Mined And Stripped

It's not made of nothing. It's made of all the things you mentioned that have been mined and stripped off the bodies of work created by the efforts of others. It's a Frankenstein's monster of mutilated art displayed as if it's not a garish perverted amalgam of theft; a beautifully arranged construction of stolen creativity and dreams. AI art is the digital equivalent of the British Museum.

ai generated images make me increasingly sad and tired the more i see them in more and more casual contexts. i dont know how to explain, but it just fills the world with a bunch of nothing. no matter how visually stunning the pictures might be, there's nothing behind it for me. no dedication, no emotions, no feelings, no hard work or creativity, nothing i can truly think about, admire or enjoy. i dont think thats how art is supposed to be

my hatred for ai will never die. i hate most ai with a burning passion (apart from chat bots and chatgpt when used in a non-shitty way). i damn near screamed at a teacher a few months ago for claiming that ai art is real art. it is not real art. art is human. art has a soul in at least SOME way, no matter who made it. ai doesn’t have that. ai is killing creative industries. i hate ai i hate it i hate it.
