The rainbow effect in the trail comes from the lack of an antialiasing filter on the camera's sensor: you see those colors because those are the specific sub-pixels that were struck by the light as it moved over them.

Old Growth and Ancient Light
The Milky Way sets behind old growth forest on top of Gaudineer Knob in West Virginia. One of the areas with the least light pollution on the East Coast, the Monongahela National Forest is ideal for astrophotography (as long as you can find a clearing).

Took part of an evening from a recent business trip to find some dark(er) skies to try to get some Milky Way photos.
I was aiming for some Bortle Class 2 skies, but due to road closures and my own failing alertness I settled for Class 4 skies. Still enough for a this shot with some sensor-based tracking and a ton of post-processing.

Two shots of the Milky Way from a hilltop in central Pennsylvania, nice and far from any major city or source of light pollution. The orange glow and haze near the horizon comes mostly from smoke particles still blowing down from Canada. The first shot was during nautical twilight, and the second was shot two hours later during the darkest portion of the night.

The Aurora Borealis of Friday May 10, 2024, as seen from a light-polluted Pittsburgh suburb. Much of the brightness and some of the color was visible to the naked eye, and only a few seconds of long exposure time with the camera was needed to pull out quite extraordinary detail.
WITCH HEAD NEBULA * IC 2118 (also known as Witch Head Nebula due to its shape) is an extremely faint reflection nebula believed to be an ancient supernova remnant or gas cloud illuminated by nearby supergiant star Rigel in the constellation of Orion. It lies in the Orion constellation, about 900 light-years from Earth. The nature of the dust particles, reflecting blue light better than red, is a factor in giving the Witch Head its blue color. Radio observations show substantial carbon monoxide emission throughout parts of IC 2118, an indicator of the presence of molecular clouds and star formation in the nebula. In fact candidates for pre-main sequence stars and some classic T-Tauri stars have been found deep within the nebula. The molecular clouds of IC 2118 are probably juxtaposed to the outer boundaries of the vast Orion-Eridanus bubble, a giant supershell of molecular hydrogen blown by the high mass stars of the Orion OB1 association. As the supershell expands into the interstellar medium, favorable circumstances for star formation occur. IC 2118 is located in one such area. The wind blown appearance and cometary shape of the bright reflection nebula is highly suggestive of a strong association with the high mass luminous stars of Orion OB1. The fact that the heads of the cometary clouds of IC2118 point northeast towards the association is strong support of that relationship.. Credit to Pablo Carlos Budassi.
