Mouse is the opposite. She represents sensory over-responsiveness, as loud noises hurt her ears and she likes soft things.

Lastly, Llama represents Echolalia. She communicates to her friends by repeating their words.

My baby cousin is 7 has just been diagnosed with ASD, can anyone suggest good kids TV shows that have characters that are autistic (even if it's not explicitly stated)?

Review: We Could Be So Good by Cat Sebastian

Rating: 4/5 Stars

Genre(s): Romance, period drama (The setting is 1950s New York)

Tropes: Friends to lovers, slow burn, found family

Rep: Gay Italian-American MC, bisexual and autistic love interest (It’s never directly stated that Andy is autistic, but it is made very, very clear that he is)

My Thoughts: This book, you guys. I love it so, so much. It was such a gentle, comforting read, like a cup of hot cocoa on a cold morning, and so very domestic.

The main thing I liked about this book was the domesticity of the relationship between Nick and Andy. I loved seeing them just exist together, cooking, shopping, having dinner parties with their friends, and even adopting a stray cat, and from the moment Andy moved into Nick’s apartment, it truly felt like the two of them were married, but didn’t know it yet. They do know it by halfway mark, however, despite living in a time period where they can’t get married, or even be public about their relationship without risking legal action, but by the end of the novel, all of their friends know that they’re together, and they’ve even built up a network of queer people at work. I also really liked exploring the complex relationships that Nick and Andy had with their families, with Andy being fiercely proud of his mother’s work, even though she was never there for him when she was alive, and his improving relationship with his father, who wasn’t much better in terms of parenting, but he’s one of the first to know, and accept that fact that Andy is in love with Nick, and he bonds with Andy much more as an adult. Meanwhile, Nick is firmly in the closet to everyone in his family, except for his cop brother, who very much does not approve of his sexuality, mainly because it puts his career at risk. He agrees to keep Nick’s sexuality, and his relationship with Andy a secret, but it is made very clear that he would prefer for Nick to be with a woman, if only because of his career as a cop being at risk.

Another thing I really liked was the handling of Andy’s relationship with his ex fiancée, Emily. Despite their relationship not working out, she remains very present in Nick and Andy’s lives, and there’s never any animosity between them. She, Nick, and Andy become genuine friends, and she’s arguably the most supportive of their relationship in their circle of friends.

Overall, this was a great read, and I would highly recommend it. If domestic gay fluff is what you’re into, this one is for you

Okay, we really fucking need to differentiate between “autism-coding” when it comes to characters in media and “this character is just 100% autistic, even if the creators won’t say it.”

I fucking swear, allistic people really do not grasp that the queer equivalent of 90% of “autism-coding” would be “these two male characters have had on-screen sex several times, spend all of their time holding hands and calling each other their boyfriend” and if straight people saw that and then went “well, they’re not actually queer, it’s just queer coding, because they never explicitly use queer identity labels in canon, and actually, the creator is homophobic, so there’s no way these characters are actually gay, so it’s fine for me to make fun of them for being effeminate” everyone would quite rightly think they were being a fucking dick.

Like, I 100% get that some people take “coding” to fucking extremes, but 9 times out of 10 with autism, this isn’t coding. Allistic writers live around autistic people without knowing it and they use us as inspiration, without knowing they’re writing an autistic character.

That doesn’t make the character any less autistic in practice, in the same way that the queer character described above would still be a queer character, even if the author had literally never heard of the concept of being gay, they’d just seen two guys being boyfriends and decided to write about it without the labels. The label is not the important point there.

I see so much autistic Regulus in ffs but it's always used as a quirky character trait and never really as a disorder with actual consequences. Yes to stimming, but also yes to meltdowns. Yes to apathy, but also yes to sensory hypersensitivity. Yes to special interests, but also yes to crying at every single inconvenience. Yes to rambling, but also yes to processing issues. Yes to difficult communication, but also yes to constant and uninterrupted speaking to himself when he's alone. Yes to saying he's autistic, but also yes to showing it.

MOBSWEEP MOBSWEEP

WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE MOB:

WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE MOB:

(here he is he’s in the @autismswagsummit quarterfinals or semifinals i can’t remember i’m in a bit of a hurry)

his entire story is about accepting all parts of himself, including his autism!! and he DOES!!

he’s visibly autistic even though he tries to mask most of the time but people love him! he has many friends and allies and a great family who all care about him

nice kindness. friendly boy swag.

at one point he saves an entire group of people from being brainwashed by a cult leader because he doesn’t understand social cues

canonically has low empathy but is one of the most compassionate people ever

he has meltdowns that get dangerous because of his psychic powers and these cause him to lock his emotions away because he’s afraid he’ll hurt someone :(

he speaks in a very monotone voice even after he accepts all parts of himself

his facial expressions are pretty muted when he makes them at all

he has no idea what he wants to do with his life and he’s not very good at academics. confused autistic rep! rep for autistics who don’t know what the fuck going on!!

his younger brother is also autistic but he needs less support than mob, so he’s overlooked and their relationship becomes strained because of it

i cannot stress enough that he’s just a normal autistic guy. not a super genius or anything (those are cool, but there are way more of them!). just a regular guy who’s not very good at most things but still tries his best anyway. i’m sure there are other autistics like that out there!!!

he is never ridiculed or made a joke of by the narrative

he’s THE MAIN CHARACTER also. we get to see his autism from HIS point of view, which is still very rare!!!

even if he does need support, it’s never shown that he’s a burden for it. he’s not!! his loved ones love him so they support him!

this got really long but PLEASE VOTE FOR MY SON MOB HE NEEDS TO WIN
