I really miss Harley being a villain. I want to see a version of her were she is cruel and does actual evil things.

ok, so this version of harley kidnaps and psychologically tortures rich men into giving up all their money away to charity

i see no problem with this and love her all the more for it

Just finished Caped Crusader (spoilers) and WOW it was so good! 🤩 I especially loved this portrayal of Batman because of how clearly morally ambiguous he was! He made a lot of really questionable choices that he didn’t even attempt to explain or justify, just accepted as a means to an end for the “greater good.” I’m used to seeing much more conflicted, guilty, and/or -deep in the cognitive dissonance- portrayals so it really stood out! That’s the Batman I wish we could see more of because that’s where his strengths as a vigilante lie imo.

Getting to see his relationship with Alfred from the place it started—as a spoiled rich kid treating him so clearly like the “help”—to the last scene with him was SO impactful because it felt real. It’s so typical to see the friend/family dynamic they have once they’re well established in their journey, but it most likely didn’t start there. And this felt like a glimpse of that telltale moral ambiguity but from his life as Bruce Wayne. It makes sense that their relationship would also experience growing pains and it also makes sense that Alfred has seen the good in him the whole time and stuck around to see it on the outside too.

I’m obsessed with the fact that it takes place in the 1940s. It’s so cool to see a modern retelling of what Batman would have looked like in the era he was created/before he could go all out with his tech and gadgets. I also really liked the way they handled the diversity throughout. Because they didn’t go the “it wasn’t historically accurate to have XYZ” route—they had a Black police commissioner (when the first one IRL was in the 1980s), a wlw relationship that existed in public, and several women in clear positions of power. BUT they also didn’t go the route of “there’s no racism/misogyny/homophobia in this world” either. It’s a fine line and they pulled it off well. Even going as far as to make character choices that added diversity AND dimension that would knowingly piss off the crybabies in the fandom—such as making Penguin a woman and making Harley AAPI.

They added such a unique twist to each villain that also embodied so much of the original characters still and it was so cool to see which villains they decided to go with because I didn’t spoil it for myself beforehand. I haven’t looked up to see if a second season is confirmed but based on the final scene I’m assuming it is and I’m SO EXCITED!

It really says something about me (and I have no shame about that something) that she was up and away my least favorite character in the whole show. While my favorite villains was Gentleman Ghost.

It's probably a Serbian thing.

ok, so this version of harley kidnaps and psychologically tortures rich men into giving up all their money away to charity

i see no problem with this and love her all the more for it

A lot of people are also assuming it takes place in the 40s, which it doesn't, it's set in an ambiguous time with a 40s aesthetic

Okay, so Batman Caped Crusader was pretty enjoyable. 👀 I loved the callbacks to BTAS, however, it is NOT a sequel or prequel to BTAS, so don't go in thinking that.

For some reason a lot of people are assuming it is, forming the wrong expectations, and then getting upset over it being different from their assumptions. So...don't do that. It's a different take that simply has a very BTAS like aesthetic and Bruce Timm working on it, but they also mix it with Golden Age stuff as well as other things.

BATMAN: Caped Crusader

BATMAN: Caped Crusader

1940s Gotham. Corruption infects the city from root to fruit and rises like the high tide to drown out the virtues of the judiciary, the jury, and justice with the fetid rot of the swamp that is high office and bad politics.

Draining the swamp is always a matter of principle for the men and women who, on principle, oppose the injustice rampant throughout Gotham. In the face of overwhelming odds, such men and women need a champion to represent, protect, and guide them through the troubled times to a just and righteous future.

BATMAN: Caped Crusader

These heroes of a progressive Gotham need Batman, the Caped Crusader, and for all of Batman: Caped Crusader’s flaws, being progressive is not one of them. Instead, Batman: Caped Crusader is a poor man’s version of Batman the Animated Series wearing the 1940s on its emaciated body like a poorly fitted, stupidly loud zoot suit.

Yes, Oswald Copplebot is now a gender-flipped version named Oswalda Copplebot. Sure, Renee Montoya has a lesbian date with Harley Quinn.

So what?

Gordon is black, but Bullock takes orders from him as if he were vanilla white.

Renee kisses Harley, and Harley leaves for the rest of the season.

Detective Flass is a black man and one of the worst people in Gotham.

Batman ‘batmans,’ Gotham ‘gothams,’ and Rupert Thorne orders acid thrown into Harvey Dent’s face.

Whoop de doo, zippadeedoda, hubba hubba hubba, who do you trust?

BATMAN: Caped Crusader

Me? I'm reviewing Batman for free.

Regardless of most critics’ views on the Caped Crusader’s progressive leanings, my biggest problem is how pointless everything was.

Batman fights villains, investigates crimes, and fights the police. It's all on the same bat time and the same bat channel. Batman fights the Gentleman Ghost, and it is not someone dressed up as a ghost. Batman makes an honest-to-god attempt to exorcize an English nobleman ghost who hates the poor. Not only did the whole episode feel pointlessly out of place in a reasonably gritty Gotham City, but warner bros wasted their chance to introduce a 1940s John Constantine instead of who I assume is Papa Midnight.

BATMAN: Caped Crusader

Batman: Caped Crusader only has bleached skin and hollow bones beneath its promises of progressive storytelling and diverse casting, starved for a story that weaves the mythos of the Dark Knight with an aspect of humanity’s struggle oversaturated with cliches.

Imagine a Bruce Wayne who has to craft his persona to blend in or capitalize on a wave of new ideas that threatens to tear down the breakwaters of a conservative America reeling from a bloody world war.

Follow the struggle of a Crusader who, intent at first on taking advantage of the possible benefits provided to someone who is an ‘ally’ of lesbians and the discriminated, comes to respect these lonely men and women fighting their crusade armed with their ideals for a better Gotham and truly becomes a Dark Knight fighting for a brighter future.

Witness the ray of hope that Batman brings to those who need a champion and how it inspires the cynics to risk their lives for something greater than themselves.

BATMAN: Caped Crusader

There was a story in Batman: Caped Crusader. There had to be a story; you can fry up potato skins all you want, but potato skins need cheddar cheese and bacon bits inside them. Unfortunately, the show was too busy frying up a skin of progressive lesbianism and diversity, forgot to fill that skin with anything worth chewing on, and fucked up the frying as well.

Batman: Caped Crusader might just have the most underwhelming Two-Face design in all of media. I mean, look at this:

Batman: Caped Crusader Might Just Have The Most Underwhelming Two-Face Design In All Of Media. I Mean,

Yeah, it looks messed up, but compare it to other Two-Faces in the past:

Not only do the colors help show the DIVIDE of the character's features, but they really went all out in showing how grotesque Two-Face can get. Even in the golden age, which the show bases most of its design influence on, looks better than Caped Crusader's design.

Batman: Caped Crusader Might Just Have The Most Underwhelming Two-Face Design In All Of Media. I Mean,

It's not grotesque, but there's still a sense that it's a man's features split in two. But in Caped Crusader, the features blend together too much you can't really see that divide. It's just so...disappointing.
