My Witherburn Afterschool News Theory
The Disappearances- obviously it's something to do with the Clarks, but I think they're running a cult in the town that are sacrificing the kidnapped people to some kind of God. I'm not sure if this god is real, but I suspect it's the man that the mayor was babbling about in Episode 21, which does somewhat incline me to believe that there is a real person they're worshipping, although I'm not sure if he has magical powers or not. They are probably sending out members of the cult into the woods to lure in the kids that they would then kill. This cult has also been going since at least the 1950s, kidnapping and killing outcasts since then, but has recently started to up its activity.
The Monsters- I'm still not sure if there are monsters or not. If there are monsters then I think they are being caused by the cults activity, possibly with the kids being turned into them, as was said to have happened to Evelyn Grahm as described in Episode 8. This is also backed up by several of the mlMonsters of the Week being missing children transformed into monsters (Episodes 4, 10, 20). Alternatively, if there are no monsters then I think they are the actions of the cult being seen by outsiders and misunderstood, see Monster of the Week Episode 3, 17 and 21. Honestly with what we know so far this could go either way, but I'm thinking somewhere in the middle, that there's real monsters being brought about by the cult, while people are mistaking their activities in the woods for monsters. Honestly this just depends on what the writers find scarier, the body horror of the transformation, or the cult terrorising a small town.
Hunter and Eva- I think Hunter was recruited to the cult by his parents, who encouraged his his horrible behaviour in order to provide the cult with a scapegoat when the time came. I think Eva was forced to join the cult by her father and was leaving the graffiti in order to sabotage the cult without being caught. As for her claim about them summoning the apocalypse, I'm not sure. She may have lied to, or this could be accurate, we don't have enough information yet. Either way it probably won't make a difference this season, which is the time frame I'm working from.
What I think is coming next- I think that the Reporter will go onto the Clarks secret land in the finale after the cult has betrayed her by going back on their work and taking someone else. I think they will then kidnap her while she's there, in an attempt to force her back into speaking in their favour. I think the actual Witherburn Afterschool News program will then be taken over by either one of the Reporters relatives, or by Birdie who will be trying to save the Reporter from the cult, while fighting the disinformation they would be spreading through the Reporters mouth.
That's just what I think will happen, and I hope I've got at least a few things right.
hey g uys, i'm a little nervous to share this fanart but very recently an animator whose work i really liked when i was a younger preteen and who i've been kinda watching online for a few years now recently came back with a banger and a half, and it's Birdie!! i've been super excited about his return to the internet since it uploaded a couple days ago and in celebration of hearing that he's doing well now, i drew his sona because it just looks super cool dude like lookat him!
i'm excited he's doing well and i'm even more excited for the new art he'll be posting in the future! welcome back Birdie!!!

The comic is a bit messy in terms of posing etc. because this is basically the first time I’ve attempted anything like a comic since I was like 12. also only a sketch because I wasn’t happy how I was doing line art or color in all this.
I have something to say about animals. yesterday i learned that piggies are very smart. so i decided to never eat another piggy again. birdies on the other hand, they not that intelligent. so im goin to continue to eat chickens turkeys and quails. the only birdie i refuse to eat is birdie sanders.

the subtle emotional disconnect that birdie has with fearne is so nuanced and so delicious; in my mind, fearne is her child, this is her girl, birdie says “I’ll blow up both moons for her” so fervently and yet! there is a very nonchalant slippery way she actually regards fearne as she’s standing there, looking at her, mentioning choices birdie made that were shortcomings, and birdie almost lightly lightly shrugs it away and reasserts her mission, apologizes, lightly, but again.. her mind is on her mission.
and there’s so much finesse in depicting the mentality behind an absentee loved one; I love you, I love you, I have to do this, (and loving you isn’t going to make me stop); the level of goodhearted denial is incredible that birdie is too far gone in it that she can’t even see the impact of her choices, she can’t see how much it’s changed fearne, she can’t see how much it’s changed herself. she started with love and where has it made her go, but no no that’s too … unnecessary! it’s all right! i’m doing this for you!
