...Is this what they call karma?

The bastard in her hands...no, the infant in her hands held an uncanny resemblance to the conniving dormhead she came to despise. Her gloved hands gripped the baby whilst the tweels stood on either side of her, trying to coerce a deal.

“You...actually think I can take care of..this?”

“Oya? You think we made a miscalculation in our judgement?”

“Yes actually...”

“Well~ think of it this way, if you take care of baby azul then you can ask for anything from him in return!”

“But why can’t you two-“

“Because we’ll be busy managing the Monstro Lounge, I thought you were more observant than this prefect?”

“I’m curious, what actually happened?”

“Nothing too serious really, just the usual Alchemy class accidents where some certain rowdy students played too much...”

The prefect didn’t had to see the vice dorm head as she felt the sadistic aura radiating off of him at whatever he was planning to do to those poor unforntuante souls.With an exasperated sigh, she carried the octo infant in her arms and gave a stern nod to the tweels.

“I’m expecting a week’s worth of blueberry cheesecake after this”

“Will do prefect~” “Ne~ if that’s all then okiii”

The tweels left as fast as they arrived, leaving the prefect with a wailing octo infant in her arms.

“Well Takoyaki...your stuck with moi until tomorrow...”

The baby continued to cry, flailing its arms at the unfamiliar person holding him letting one of his tentacles slap her on the cheek.

“OW THAT HURTS-“

That’s when the prefect realized what she was supposed to do. Letting what little memory she had with handling children, she slowly brought the merfolk closer to her chest.

“...I can’t believe I’m even doing this...”

She let him rest his chin on her shoulder as she slowly caressed his back softly.

“Shhh...Ate is here...don’t worry, I won’t let anyone harm you ok.?”

The girl inwardly cringed at her measy attempt of comforting. ‘Why tf am I making a promise to the takoyaki bastard-‘

“Nya..!”

..Did he just.?

Slowly, he lulled in her touch letting her gloved hands bring comfort to his soft and minuscule body.

“Alright...we gotta get along for now until tomorrow ok? This is as hard for me as it is for you but I’m sure we’ll manage..”

And with that, off they went to ramshackle dorm.

♠️ Mission 1: Feed the Takoyaki

“We...barely have anything to eat here huh”

“Hngg”

“Don’t you dare touch that.”

The prefect, already out of her uniform and in a navy blue hoodie and sweats, stood on her toes as she reached for the very few edible food in the kitchen cabinets.

“Aight, I’m gonna have to wing this whole thing cause godamn I’m not mother material...”

She took a fork and started mushing the bananas until it became a thick consistency, then grabbed another clean spoon slightly stirring it before facing the tiny octo baby who was...making grabby hands at the bowl?

“I know your hungry but wow...I guess we’re all gluts every now and then”

An amused grin crossed her lips as she scooped a portion of the banana abomination, gently brining it to the infant’s face.

“Azu~ say ah~” “Ah~-mf”

He chomped on the spoon, not letting a single bit of food fall out. The prefect retreated her hand as she lightly dabbed a napkin on the baby’s face.

“Azu-chan~ you have food on your face so sit still-“ “nYE!”

In just mere seconds, the once tidy table became covered with baby food as the prefect slowly raised her hand to touch her face which, surprise surprise was also covered in yellow.

“..you little shi-“

♠️ Mission 2: Clean the Takoyaki

“for someone who caused all of this, you seem too happy about it”

The prefect carried the baby merfolk to the only working bathroom at ramshackle, filling the tub with lukewarm water as the tako baby laughed with delight at the sight of the prefect’s face.

“Aight in you go!”

The infant immediately slipped out of the girl’s hands and into the bath tub, making a visible splash as he went directly to the bottom of the bathtub.

“Oh no you don’t- cmere Azu-chan.”

The prefect gently rubbed his food covered hair with soap, letting bubbles foam on top. It’s apparently amusing to the baby since he looked at the floating bubbles in innocent wonder. Even going as far as clapping in glee letting small droplets of water splash on the prefect.

“Even in this form you won’t listen to me huh..”

She didn’t even notice the gentle smile forming on her face as she continued to scrub the tako baby clean of the prior food.

“There we go, aight time to get out”

Azul made a pouty face but it was ineffective against the the prefect who scooped the baby tako with a clean towel, ruffling his hair ever so slightly to dry out the water.

♠️ Mission 3: Get sleep with the Takoyaki

She allowed the the infant to crawl on the worn out bed, whilst the prefect lied down on the edge. She made sure to put few pillows on the other edge so that the baby tako doesn’t accidentally fall off and become takoyaki.

“Ok you little bastard lights off”

She reached for the light switch, not even noticing the panicky expression on the infant’s face as she flicked the lights off. Letting her hair fall loose, she dozed off into bed and into the wondrous dream land.

“U-uwEH!!!”

‘Good nights sleep my ass..’ She was about to get up but was stopped by...something reaching to pat her cheek.?

Now that her vision was adjusted to the dark, she saw slight tears prick at the corners of his aquamarine like eyes, daring to fall any minute whilst the moonlight outside illuminated the room in an ominous glow.

“..hey, what happened...”

She felt one of his pitch black tentacles wrap tighter around her right hand, as if he was holding on to dear life. She carefully picked up the baby in her arms, allowing his array of tentacles to rest on her body.

“I think...I know what to do now..”

She slowly stood up from the bed, making sure not to let go of the sniffling tako infant for fear of making him cry even more. She slowly approached the cracked window, where the perfect view of the grand moon can be seen despite their environment.

“Shhh shhh...look over there.”

She carefully wiped his tears with her pale hands, guiding his line of sight to the full moon in the process.

“I know this place looks...intimidating, especially to someone who’s probably smaller than grim..”

The awestricken expression on the infant’s face towards the view was enough to tell the prefect that whatever she was doing, was helping.

“But even so...there’s always something to look forward to, especially when you least expect it...”

She slowly rocked him in her arms, letting his eyelids drop little by little...until he finally snored peacefully in her arms.

“Ok you little bastard...off to bed we go”

♠️ Final Mission: Bid farewell to the Takoyaki before he turns back into a bastard

“Azu-chan let go-“ “UwAH!”

If the he cried the first time they met, the tako infant was full on sobbing at this point, wrapping his tentacles on the prefect’s arms while the tweels try to pry him off.

“Oya? He only spent a day and night with you and look how attached he is~”

“Literally~”

“Senpai just please help me before the takoyaki rips my sleeve off!”

With one final tug, the three panting student at lasts detached the clingy octopus but in turn causing him to cry even louder.

“Ne azul~ Crewel-sensei already prepped the antidote~! You gotta get back to your duties before the lounge goes bankrupt!”

“*sniff* N-nyE-“

The baby looked solemnly at the prefect who was still shaking her arm trying to pry off the fatigue of being held too tightly. Jade made sure to have a firm grip on the dormhead turned infant in case he dared to make a move.

“T..Ts..”

“Oya?” “Ne~?” “..Nani?”

“Tsu..t-tsu...”

“Ne~ is he trying to say his first word~?”

“..Does this even count as his first word?”

“Well technically he’s never said a coherent word ever since he was turned into that form...so in a way, yes it appears that our baby azul is trying to say his first word~”

The octo baby made grabby motions at the prefect, letting even few of his tentacles to point at the confused girl.

“T-..Tsuki!”

“I think that’s enough bonding time with me”

She pushed the snickering tweels towards the direction of the alchemy classroom, trying to ignore the stares their getting from the other students.

“Aight better turn him back before it becomes permanent!”

“Thank you shrimpy~! We’ll pay you once we settle things!”

“Until we meet again prefect.”

And with that, the infamous teal haired twins turned the corner...carrying a teary eyed octopus in hand.

“Damn, I can finally get some peace...”

A sudden realization struck her garnering her to stop immediately in her tracks.

“Crap I forgot to pick up grim from Heartslabyul!”

You know that headcanon where the batch painted their armour teal and orange to symbolise that they don't belong with the empire or anywhere else except their own squad? And how Omega helped them, maybe even chose the colours, and they had fun painting it together?

I had to wear some too small shoes for work for a few days until I could get new ones ‘cause they had to be steel toe shoes (I was not aware steel toe wasn’t just hyperbole, people are putting steel in shoes and that’s cool but still wild to me) and it fucked up my toes and ankles I think. They haven’t stopped hurting and it’s been over a week, and walking’s still terrible, and every time I get up I wobble like a fucking fawn. It’s the worst. Annoying part is that after I changed the shoes they told me they could have just given me a new pair if I’d asked, and I did; all the management guys I asked about it just didn’t know. I wouldn’t be as peeved about that if I didn’t have to buy less food b/c of the cost of the shoes. Point is I don’t like walking right now

Things I’m sad we don’t get to see in Dead Boy Detectives canon - Crystal Palace Edition - Part One

There are so many things I had hoped for, for each of the characters, in Season Two and beyond, and it makes me sad that we won't get to see them on screen. Among them:

I’m sad we don’t get to see Crystal figuring out her relationship to her past and her family now that she has a new perspective on who it is she wants to be.

I’m sad we don’t get to find out if her parents really are that awful (quite possible!) or if there was something else going on. (I wondered, during their phone call, if perhaps to them she really hadn’t been missing for weeks, and I wondered what might cause that to be the case)

I’m sad we don’t get to see Crystal learning more about her ancestors and who they were

I’m sad that we don’t get to see her figuring out how to reconnect to her old friends, or even if she wants to. (Some of them are just not that great, but are there some of them who were actually nice? And what does it look like for her to put herself out there to re-establish a relationship with someone she has hurt in the past?)

I’m sad we don’t get to see more of her relationship with Emma (I have soooo many questions, including “Where is Emma now?” and “Where did she go after Crystal was rescued?”)

I’m sad we don’t get to see any more of how she handles having met David the human guy, and if she even remembers him as a separate entity (again, I have so many questions about David the human guy and David the demon, and their (?) relationship with Crystal)

I’m sad we don’t get to see her friendship with the boys develop more. I’m sad we don’t get to see her grieving Niko, or finding Niko, or any of that.

I love fanfic, I would love seeing these ideas explored more during fanfic, but it’s not quite the same.

The show did such a good job with intertwining everyone’s storylines, and having the very realistic setup of everyone dealing with their own situations at the same time, while also having the very dramatically satisfying setup of having events resonate with multiple characters at the same time, and… I’m sad that we won’t be able to see that.

I’m going to do at least one more of these with some bigger topics for Crystal, but:

I’m sad we don’t get to see more of Crystal Palace in Dead Boy Detectives season two.

Things I’m sad we didn’t get to see in Dead Boy Detectives canon - Crystal Palace Edition - Part Two

In Part One of this post, I talked about how there are a bunch of things that I'm sad that we don't get to see Crystal deal with in Season Two (and beyond), and a lot of those had to do with her family and friendships.

But I'm also sad that we don't get to see the continuation and resolution of her arc with David, because her character development as part of that arc is such an important part of her:

I’m sad we don’t get to see the resolution to the arc with David the Demon and how she’s going to deal with him being buried under the tree (or, eventually, not buried under the tree). I felt like that was going to be a big thing for Crystal in next season’s arc, and was both excited and apprehensive for it.

I feel that Edwin and Charles would be upset and disappointed, ultimately, that she was hiding that from them, although the damage to her that manifests from keeping David under the tree (and I have no doubt that she would keep him there, until it started to cause serious problems) might influence the way those feelings show themselves. I think that Edwin would still have problems with her hiding the fact that she is carrying a demon, even if David is, in the scheme of things, a minor demon who is not very powerful.

Since those things echo problems that they had at the beginning of season one, I would have been very interested to see how the way the characters think about them and express themselves about them has changed by the end of season two, and I’m sad we don’t get to see that.

I’m sad that we don’t get to find out more about Crystal’s relationship with David and how it began, and whether it was opportunistic (he likes that she has power) or whether it was targeted (a deliberate and premeditated attempt to seduce her in hopes of gaining access to her power for himself, or limiting her power to keep her out of the way for someone else).

The idea that someone might have tried to suppress the power of a scion of powerful women by hiding her memories in an attempt to cut off her connection to who she is is … powerful, for me. And I was curious, as to whether this might have been that. And to how Crystal might have processed it, if it was.

I'm also curious as to how much David might have manipulated the memories that he took, and how Crystal might navigate the process of figuring that out, if he did.

I'm really sad that we didn't get to see any of this develop further, because I had confidence that the writers had planned to address it and had plans for addressing it in a way that would respect and challenge and strengthen the characters and their relationships.

These are things that I was nervous about, but was excited to see, and I'm coming to terms with part of my sadness about the show ending is that we won't get those answers and won't get to see any of that on screen.
