Tips for Better Novel Chapters
How you start matters. Each new chapter requires some form of reader placement, which can be a line of explosion, dialogue, setting, something that informs the reader where the story has moved to. It doesn’t have to be extensive, but there needs to be some form of clue, even in an ‘in media res’ opening.
Length matters. Short chapters help speed up pacing while longer chapters can let the reader feel the scene with extended setting, thought, dialogue, etc. If you’re writing an emotional scene, it usually helps to keep everything together, whereas action may benefit from breaks to enforce the idea of movement. The length of a chapter should fit its purpose.
The pattern of length matters. If you generally write longer chapters, a short one is going to stand out as sudden or worth paying attention to. If you write shorter chapters, a long one may reinforce the significance of an event. It helps to vary the length of your chapters for an interesting story structure.
Chapter breaks should have a reason. Based purely on average reader attention span, a chapter should be between 2,000 and 5,000 words. But don’t just count words and assume your chapter is over once you hit the milestone, or fear if you don’t hit it, because you must have a reason for choosing to break in that specific spot.
Chapters affect story structure. If you’re working with two (or more) POVs and develop an early pattern of switching the narrator every chapter, your reader may expect that structure to be consistent through the entire story. Keep track of your chapters to avoid accidental (or unwanted) patterns or to keep on track with purposeful ones.
Watch your focus. Longer chapters can make your story lose a sense of direction if all the scenes don’t have connecting elements. They should be written around pivotal character goals, encounters, and developments, and typically contain 2-3 related scenes.
Don’t let things wind down unless it’s significant. Not every scene or chapter needs to have a build-up, climax, and cool-down. It’s best to just focus on the important middle part instead of writing how all the characters walk into the scene, play out the important middle, and then leave.
Good break points include: After development between characters, after a plot discovery, just before the climax of a significant story arc, after the climax of a significant event, time skip (major or minor), the purpose of the scene comes to an end, and more! Each scene has a different point at which it’s best to end.
