Daniel Handler - Tumblr Posts
for the character opinion bingo thingy:
ornette lost?

Ornette Lost was a character with enough potential in her skills, backstory and potential VFD involvement to become a main character on the same level as Moxie or Ellington, but it seems Daniel Handler thought her up a bit too late so she ended up just sort of decorating the story without much room for character development. I don’t even have many headcanons about her. The only thing that stood out to me about her is how much more Daniel Handler could have done.

i love you strange literature i love you describing characters in a non-objectifying way i love you weird yet accurate comparisons i love you unreliable narrators i love you foreshadowing i love you villains with backstories that don't excuse their actions but still explain them i love you protagonists that just give up at some point because they've been through too much. i love you daniel handler
Every second my parents don’t appreciate Daniel Handler’s literary genius takes me one step closer to going completely feral.
the dark academia community is sleeping on daniel handler’s the basic eight, it should be right up there with the secret history as a first media recommendation
I just finished The Basic Eight and even though I knew the plot twist beforehand it still got me. I honestly felt like I was falling, and my head is still spinning and I can’t think straight. Sorry for the ramble, anyway please read this book now.

A chaotic Flannery/Natasha moodboard for @flanneryculp
Who is your favourite Basic Eight character and why is it Natasha Hyatt?
hey sorry we bludgeoned your boyfriend to death at our party last night. yeah with a croquet mallet. dont worry it wasnt for satanic reasons tho. we shoved what was left of him in our friend's car. sorry
I hope you all know that when I defend male writers and ‘women written by men’ I’m defending Daniel Handler and Daniel Handler alone.
natasha hyatt for character asks?

I love her so much it’s not even funny

Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket) on the similarities between detectives and femme fatales:
The detective and the femme fatale are both doing the exact same thing in a noir story: They’re both confined by their circumstances, and they’re both making their own moral path through a world that is sinister and secretive. … A femme fatale is a showgirl or the displaced daughter of a tycoon or a girl who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks and will do anything not to return there, and a detective often has similar circumstances. … [I]t’s what draws them together and also what makes them fight. And once I realized that – that they were really doing the same thing – I saw a way that you could put that in a children’s book. You could have a detective and a mysterious young girl who are birds of feather and who can’t stand one another and who are unapologetic about making their way in a world that seems to have no place for them.

📁 do you have any about tb8? :)
Flan’s favourite film is Heathers, and she watched it at least three times in the cinema when it came out.
