I have to get some sleep, but I just wanted to come on here and say how much "Our Flag Means Death" has healed me as both a queer person and a fandom participant. I'm on cloud 9 right now. David Jenkins has my entire heart and soul!

So I made myself process season 2 a bit more.
And wow, I have about 120 ish notes about just everything that happened. I can't put into words how good this show is and how emotional it made me.
I'm still reeling over the emotional jumps we had going from blackbeards crew to stedes crew and I'm so glad their back together and I hope that fang is okay. That poor dude needs some proper TLC. Rip Ivan š
I also love how thus far unlike season 1, everyone seems to be showing their emotions
Everyone seems more aware of each other's troubles and their talking it out finally, and it's working. So many problem that could have blown up have been talked over
Like Jim and Archie, olu might feel a bit awkward about the whole thing and Jim might feel a bit bad but atleast they told Olu, and that stopped a whole world of problems. Of Lucuis and Pete! Pete might not know everything but lucuis didn't loose his liver because he was too afraid to tell him what he's been through and that's amazing for him.
Oh and seeing Izzy apologize?? Just because? Like no one told him too, he hadn't been yelled at. He just apologized because he needed to?? That's a big Fucking step even if it's small.
I hope people see this more than just character development and apply this in their own life's. Because Jenkins is a beautiful writer. I thank him for this amazing show.

This is the bit that got me in the new Verge interview with David Jenkins (x)

david jenkins I am kissing you on the mouth
I have been an Izzy fan since season one, so yes the finale hurt a shit ton and i am in denial and havent processed yet. But I really think the finale and the whole season were really beautiful and well done. Give Con all the awards!!!!!!

This will definitely happen at some point in S2. At least, it should.

āLook tortured!ā

Our Flag Means Death ā” David Jenkins casually killing us with every new interview
i love when the events of a show are so wild and seem so extreme that you just HAVE to watch it
examples:
two traumatized biblical figures stop the apocalypse to a desperate embrace before one of them leaves potentially forever
two dead boys have a little detective agency to confessing eternal love in the literal pits of hell
and
silly little rich boy wants to be a pirate to needing to convince his murderous boyfriend not to die in the gravy bucket in mermaid form
thatās all anyways excellent shows all of them
the way some people reacted to David Jenkins and Neil Gaiman saying their shows would only have 3 seasons is so funny because I saw so many feeling devastated while I am so relieved and relaxed about it. donāt get me wrong I love getting more content with the characters I love butā¦ normalize cohesive storytelling. normalize ENDINGS. do you REALLY want another s*pernatural????

honk honk hello he can call bullshit on them now? interesting š

Love him sm for this like go š off š David š

one of the best things david jenkins does with OFMD is that when he fucks with the historicity of 18th century pirate-adventure genre, the effect is not just comedic. itās not just getting a kick out of leather gang + clipper ships + dramatic capture scene set to fleetwood macās the chain + british royalists in their stupid wigs.Ā itās that the obscuring of that timeline and ours allows u to perceive the setting of imperialism that the characters are playing in as both a past relic and present reality. is this more intentional than just an aesthetic choice? feels like it. why not tbh? the Pirates Dicking Around genre has always been about 1700s western european empire. and in OFMD we get an eerie insistence that there is actually no post-colonial era. there never was. thereās just the iterations of that violent legacy: from the trans-atlantic slave route, the pillaging of asia-pacific, etc. to the current forms of global imperial militarism and armed police states that took its place. on paper the show is based on a true story. in tone itās present-haunted. and the central motley crew here works bc theyāre all dynamic, hilarious, flirty, grimy, etc. but they also work bc theyāre all visually, clearly a little united nations survey of colonized peoples whose shit was fucked up by 18th century imperialists. and it isnāt even subtext??Ā the whole show is about piracy as refuge. yea sure, from everyoneāsĀ dicey personal life dramas, sour romantic entanglements, the general banalities of life etc. but also, piracy as escape from the larger ills of societal outcasting and poverty as a result of ā¦. . british/spanish/french/etc colonialism. consider: blackbeardās voice in the show is just taikaās actual mÄori accent. and thereāsĀ a scene where you find out the kraken isnāt real, thatĀ blackbeard is monster and man. and behind his infamy is just some guy whoās traumatized, forlorn as all fuck, with insane daddy issues, etc. but whose tender humanity is brought into question against his own monstrousness. you see the whites of his eyes peering out of a soot smeared face,Ā a mirror of the savage native caricature that all 18th century western europeans held of their colonized pacific islander subjects. blackbeardās final act is a regression into that mythic dehumanization but rly itās just him at his most heartbroken and lonely. and yea, this isĀ mainlyĀ the angsty climax part of a multi-act love story. but also perhaps a purposeful genre-aware moment among many other similar moments within a show whose historical/present context is very explicit. and is meant to define the parameters of the world these characters are struggling in. ultimately OFMD makes u feel like. the absurd horror and wretchedness of colonialismās totaling stain on history is in fact the most surreal wasteland valley-of-death setting for a group of outcasts to go and find refuge in love, gay sex, hooligan shit, and jokes. in the 1700s pirate hostile open seas, among their own fellow-othered.Ā u know
ofmd fandom how we feeling rn?
