okay, ive been rereading the books, and what if Kitty was right? what if Dexter became a witch? also, the fact that they mention it multiple times and put emphasis on him even though it's not Raven's chapter adds to this idea.

Imagine
Legacy Day. The signing procession goes from story to story, not starting with the most important story of Snow White, but starting with the unknowns. The second born, second rate heroes, villains, riff raff and drabble.
Dexter Charming is at the stand. He looks out at the crowd of his friends, his brother. His twin sister behind him giving him words of encouragement before he signs. He says the magic words with wavering breath: "I, Dexter Charming, am ready to pledge my destiny."
His key appears in the air before him. Gold with a sharp edged stem and a silhouette of a jackal laid on a deep blue background on the bow. He carefully plucked it and turned it into the lock on the Storybook of Legends.
The pages flip through, faster and faster, stopping on an image of him. In a long forgotten tale.
He was a king. With a beautiful wife, a beautiful kingdom and a child on the way. A breath of relief escaped him as he stood tall and watched the pages continue turning and the story progressing.
He saw him above a slain sea beast, spear in hand and he beamed. His family had nothing to worry about, he had nothing to worry about. He would continue the family legacy just as everyone hoped. But the pages kept turning.
A furious sea god cursing the kingdom. Him and his future wife giving away their child. Years later and he turns dark. Cold blooded. Ruthless. He goes back to the man he gave his child to, cursing him for eternity. And his child returning, fully grown. He knows it's his kid, his wife knows it's their kid, but they turn them away anyway. Why? because they didn't fit the Charming family standard. The Sea God returns only to curse him and his wife themselves.
A large ornate gold mirror blinks into existence in front of him, showing a still imagine of his cold, grey, drowned body floating in the ocean.
His hands hold the podium until his knuckles turn white. His legs can barely keep him up as he stares in stricken shock at the future in front of him. Mouth agape, the key turns into a feather pen, expecting him to subject himself to that horrid ending as if nothing were wrong with it.
He had spent his entire life fearing that he would never know what destiny had in store for him. Now that he knew, he missed when he didn't.
He lifted a quivering hand to the quill, clutching it tightly and holding it to his chest while he thought.
Raven had talked about not signing. How she shouldn't be forced to do anything that goes against her being, nor should anyone else. Dexter didn't want to die in the way he just saw. He shouldn't be forced to give up a child and then shun them when it's time to take them back.
But who would he be if he didn't?
Charmings follow their story.
No matter what.
I feel like this will be a hot take.
Dexter isn't a good romantic interest for Raven or Cupid.
for Raven, she specifically states that she's too focused on just living life and figuring out her plan for any sort of romantic relationship, and the only time she ever reciprocated his feelings was when they were presented to her. Even in the episode where they go on a date, gods that was the most platonic date ever. and it's not the fact that they were awkward, it's that there was never and never has been any chemistry between the characters. They just exist in the same space, are friendly, and one has a crush on the other.
Cupid, is almost the exact same. She has a crush on Dexter, Dex does not reciprocate. she's trying to constantly find any morsel of romantic feelings from him, which I get. you see and help everyone else fall in love, you just want that for yourself. and she is wonderful in understanding that he doesn't want her like that and helping him with the person he does like. even if it hurts her. but there is still no chemistry between the two other than completely platonic.
I like to say that after dating one of both of them, Dexter realizes his feelings were just infatuation on top of admiration and not actual romantic attraction. Everyone ends off on a good note, just staying friends. that feels the most right to me for the characters.
i dont think i shared my EAH au here, but i really like it and it grew into MH and RH aus as well, and now yall get to deal with this
So music is a big part of the Ever After High world, right? and even if it’s not that big to them, it is a big part in fairy tales in general so a non-magical Music AU where every EAH character is someone in the music industry.
The Princesses, Apple and Briar mainly, are the classic pop princesses who are young but everyone knows them. Taylor Swift and Kesha of that world, ya know.
The Heroes are people working behind the scenes. Daring is set to inherit Charming Records, a recording company that anyone who is anyone in the music industry is signed with. Dexter and Humphrey are sound board technicians who help put together all the songs (with Dex doing a quite a bit more stuff for the company cause i built the au around him, so he’s important.) Darling is in set design for music videos, Hunter is the normal technician who makes sure everything in the building is working properly from lighting for videos to mics, cameras, the coffee machine in the break room, etc. That’s what the Royals do (and some rebels, obviously.)
The majority of Rebels are doing their own thing, refusing to sign with Charming records who essentially have a monopoly on the music industry and therefore are pushed to obscurity. They play to tell stories and do what they love rather than playing to get a paycheck as the Royals do.
Now, this AU was created off the idea that I really wanted Dexter and Darling in a band together, I thought it would be fun. So he and Darling work at Charming Records, same as everyone else in their family. but they have a secret side gig where they host live online shows to play their music under disguises and low lighting. They make music videos and post clips on social media.
Eventually, a few others join. Poppy and Holly, and Chase Redford on a few songs.
Really it was just an excuse to have my favorite roybels in a band together. I thought it would be fun.
yall ever think about how Dexter did not fit his family's image at all. and how much that likely hurt him growing up. how hard he tried to be the perfect prince, to be brave and strong. to fight all terrors that threaten the people.
you ever think as a kid how he looked at his family. his twin's platinum blonde hair. his older brother's golden locks. and his own muddy brown mop and thick glasses and wished he at least looked the part of a Charming, if he couldn't act like it, at least look like it.
you ever think he did what kids do and use the wrong bleach and destroy his hair. or tried to before someone stopped him. or he refused to wear his glasses for a while but he ended up failing his classes because he couldn't see the board so he had to wear them again.
you ever think about how when he finally did become a hero, defeat a monster and save his family, that he promised not to tell them what happened. and only two people will ever know and realize that he truly is a real hero. at least per his family's definition.
you ever think about his self hatred that has likely run through his head since he was in nursery rhyme school. and how that would reinforce the theory that he's meant to be a villain.
and if he had gotten to sign the storybook of legends and seen that he was a villain, how that would pile on to the guilt and self hatred of not being the perfect Charming.
hear me out. or not. this is the least baked idea I've ever had, no one can blame you if you dont.
Charming siblings, but Gravity Falls
So I have a playlist for the EAH music au I made and I wanted to share some of my favorite specific songs for some of the characters.
(note: these are not what I think their voices sound like, moreso what their musical sound would be and/or the lyrics they would write)
(and another note: not all characters are here as not all character make music. yes they're all in the music industry, but that doesn't mean they write or create music. some do art, some marketing, some are lawyers, hell some are security. so if your fav aint here, they're doing something else)
Dexter: I'm made this whole thing for him but I can't decide on a single sound for him. I feel the closest would be With Confidence. I mean the playlist is long, but seven songs from just one band, from various albums too, I'd say that's one of the top runners.
Darling: since Darling writes the majority of Apple's music, her lyrics are like Taylor Swift songs. But she as an individual is a bit of an enigma. She makes her lyrics sound very much royal, when really she's a rebel, but she's also Wonderlandian at heart. So would she sound like Junie and the Hutfriends? Or maybe Studio Killers? or AlicebanD? very honestly it could be all, none, whatever. I do feel like those could fit her though.
Raven: I know that canonically she's a huge of fan of Taylor Quick but that doesn't mean she can't like other genres or that her own sound can't be different from what her favorite. I imagine her musical sound a lot like Icon For Hire, especially with the album You Can't Kill Us, I think it's a perfect fit for her. Paramore and Avril Lavigne are also close to her.
Apple: Taylor Swift. She is the pop princess and Apple would be too. starting her career at a young age, writing stories she makes up and having her sound change and grow the more she does. But also The Rise and Fall of a Midwestern Princess album by Chappell Roan once she breaks away from the idea of making music solely for the money and fame.
Briar: Ke$ha. just all her music.
Cerise: Disobedient from Steven Universe. it's just so perfect for her. The obvious choice is She-Wolf by Shakira, which is also there for her, but Sadie and the Killers.
Sparrow and his Merry Men: Hats off the to Bull by Chevelle. no thoughts, just vibes. OR (i guess one thought), i know a lot of people dont like him, i am not one of them, i think he's fun and classic stereotypical emo, TX2.
Poppy: genuinely imagine her and Holly writing and singing Something That I Want by Grace Potter about their parents. I feel like Holly and Poppy made like a single album when they were younger and both moved on to do other things but they both still really liked music. Holly nowadays just plays short covers of songs on social media and Poppy of course being a hair stylist that eventually joins Dexter and Darling's band. With a musical sound and voice like the lead singer in Tonight Alive.
Maddie: S.J. Tucker. I'm not a huge fan of her music, a couple songs here and there, my partner is and loves how witchy her sound is. Maddie ain't every witchy, but she is odd and witchy-ness can and is also very weird and goes every which way. one song can sound like a whole different genre from another and I feel like Maddie would very much like that sound. Especially with some lesser known instruments thrown in there. (if we wanna talk about what I think her voice sounds like; Madilyn Mei)
Ashlynn: Ryn Weaver. no thoughts just vibes pt. 2
Duchess: the plot I have for her is that she isn't very musically inclined. except for dancing. she can't play instruments and can barely sing. but she has the look and is willing to do anything to become a pop star. so I have a hard time deciding what she would sound like. except ambience music near a lake. she goes along with the vibe of AURORA. Who knows it could be a Paulo and Lizzy McGuire situation where she's just a pretty face with someone else's voice over hers.
Melody: she could be doing so many different things i dont know how to choose just one. i feel like her true sound is Maggie Rogers or Chase Petra while the music she's kinda forced to have per her Charming Records contract is more like Marshmello. Very electric.
Humphrey: Flamingo by Token. i know no other song by him, and i rarely listen to rap as it isn't my jam. Only reason i know this song was a friend from high school gave me some recommendations.
Meeshell: I like the idea of her sounding like Regina Spektor. A light, smooth, clear voice over music that has clear and distinct beats. Often doing music for movies, ending songs that bring the story to a fitting finish.
Hopper: he doesn't make music per my writing, but he does write lyrics. I feel like he writes things like Cody Fry or Gang of Youths. Horribly beautiful and haunting lyrics that tell stories of death and love and beauty paired with huge symphonic melodies that are overwhelming in the best possible way.
Faybelle: Becky by Be Your Own Pet. It took me some time to figure out what exactly her sound would be but i feel like it would be a lot of loud kinda venting music to get all of her emotions out in any way she can. Even though she can get them out just fine on a normal day (though she would never admit that's what she's doing, always playing it off as not as important as it is to her, especially if it's any feeling other than anger.) sometimes writing music for it just feels better.
Chase: yes I made him an important character cause fuck you, I do what I want. Starset. The song Carnivore specifically. I wanted him to have an otherworldly but grounded type feel. like all wonderlandians though his being more...I don't want to say put together. Cohesive than the others. while the other wonderlandians are somewhat all over the place with their acoustic music, his is electronic and always revolving around a certain theme.
and that's just the current generation.
The Evil Queen has a musical sound like Pat Benatar (a personal fav of mine) though the only reason she ever had any sort of softer sounding music was because of pressure from her manager and company.
Snow White has a sound like Whitney Houston, especially with Whitney's History with Dolly Parton. I don't know who Dolly would be in this, but i dont know where i was going with this train of thought. like i said, no thoughts, just vibes.
the temptation to turn the fairytale i made up for Evil Dexter into a real thing. Like an actual short chapter or picture book. I think that could be fun.
I’m starting to suspect that Darling is specifically targeting Daring’s ladies. I mean, Duchess used to be majorly into him, but now…
It looks like she’s found someone new.

The most effective thing about Ever After High is that every student has their own personal struggle that adds another element to just how life-ruining the destiny system is.
Apple is so terrified of what will happen to her if she doesn’t follow her destiny, that she is willing to compromise everyone else’s happiness to make sure it happens. This disregard for other people is only encouraged by the influential adults in her life.
Ashlynn has to be a servant to an abusive family and live knowing that the ultimate end to her supposedly happy ending is dying to set the stage for her daughters traumatic backstory, starting the whole cycle over again with no chance for any of them to escape.
Blondie feels so pressured to fit in to a deeply classist/monarchist society and ashamed of her parentage that she constantly presents a fake version of herself to everyone she knows, even her best friends.
Briar has to spend her whole life waiting for the moment her destiny comes and she falls asleep for a century. She knows that when she’s woken up, she will be forced to marry a boy dozens of years younger than her who she’s never met and live knowing that everyone she ever loved is dead and gone, the very things that she watched cause her mother’s emotional breakdown.
Cedar’s father was so afraid of watching her repeat his mistakes that he overcorrected, making it impossible for her to ever learn lessons for herself. She is also forced to share incredibly personal details with anyone who asks her questions, and can’t be trusted by her friends with any of their secrets, and it’s all because of her father’s past trauma.
Cerise has to hide who she truly is and never gets to see her family together and happy despite the fact that her parents have potentially the most healthy and mutually beneficial marriage in the whole franchise.
Daring was groomed from birth for a destiny that ends up not actually being his at all, leaving him aimless, feeling as though he has no purpose and has wasted his entire life.
Darling is forbidden by patriarchy and destiny to become a knight, the only thing she really wants, and at which she would be better than both of her brothers. She has to hide who she is and what she loves from everyone she knows
Dexter lived his whole life never knowing what his destiny would be but also knowing that whatever it was he’d have to commit to it forever the moment he discovered it at Legacy Day.
Duchess has spent her whole life knowing that the story she’s commited to living out ends in tragedy for her, and then had to watch the very people she’s been jealous of for years because of their seemingly happy endings give up those endings, while Duchess, loyal and rule following Duchess, is still stuck with her tragedy.
Faybelle tries so hard to commit to what she sees at her destiny that she’s never had a real friend in her life. Even still, no one recognizes her for all that effort and all she’s given up to be a suitable villain. Everyone is more afraid of Raven, who doesn’t even want to be evil.
Hunter has to constantly go against his moral compass to fulfill his destined role as a Huntsman and to try and make his father proud of him.
Kitty has been taught over and over again to value her Mother’s approval over all else, even at the expense of her friends. Her destiny is to create mischief, but how much more mischief can a dissolving world take before it’s too much?
Lizzie finds it almost impossible to express love or care for anyone else due to her mothers excessive conditioning that’s nearly akin to brainwashing. The saddest thing might be that her mother is actually, in her own way, trying her best to prepare Lizzie for a world that will only ever see her one way—as a villain. Now she lives in Ever After, princess to a kingdom that might not even exist for much longer, having given up everything for a destiny that may soon be impossible.
Maddie is a refugee forced from her home into a world she barely understands at a tender age. But she cannot express any angst or negative feelings about this circumstance, because to do so would go against her character. She lives in a world obsessed with destiny and stories while not even knowing if she’ll ever be able to return home and live out her story.
Raven is judged by almost everyone around her for her mothers crimes, many of which were required of her by destiny in the first place. She is nearly forced to commit to becoming a tyrannical megalomaniac (and almost falls into it herself, several times) who would be sentenced to lifelong punishment and torture for committing acts that weren’t even her idea in the first place, and the one punishing her would have been the very girl who begged so often for her to stop being so difficult and just follow her destiny.
