Enemies To Friends - Tumblr Posts
me, browsing for fanfiction: ah yes. the ol’ “enemies to friends to lovers” trope. or, as i like to call it, the foes to bros to hoes AU
The Will/Gabriel and Matthew/Alastair thing, but also kinda Clary/Alec and Julian/Kieran- enemies to friends new favourite trope.
the way i was so hopeful about alastair and matthew making up and becoming the next will and gabriel so many years ago and now matthew is ending letters telling james to give his love to “yes, even to alastair” :,)
HI! 💖 I love your blog! Do you have any headcanons for Matthew and Alastair's friendship?
HI! Thanks so much for the ask because OF COURSE I DO. These are two of the three characters who've been spinning around and around in my head like a frozen pretzel in the microwave, how could I not have headcanons!? Here are a few!
So, first: the nature of their friendship. I think they're going to have one of those super candid/honest friendships where they tell the other the stuff that they need to hear, even when they don't necessarily want to hear it. Like, I think that the backbone of their friendship will be honesty that goes in both directions, and I don't think they're going to sugarcoat what they have to say to each other. I think they're going to play the (very important) role in each other's lives of friends that are always pushing each other to be better and challenging each other's worldviews, but in the best possible way.
But the other side of this is that they're always the first person that the other goes to in a pinch (besides Thomas and Matthew's Blurry Wife, obviously). They know they can trust each other to provide kind but honest and firm input.
Both of them have a wonderful time playing harmless pranks on each other. Sometimes they enlist others to help create and execute more elaborate ones.
One of Alastair's funniest pranks was breaking into the Fairchild house while Matthew was staying there and leaving random gifts on his bed. He moved furniture around and convinced Matthew that there was a ghost there until he finally revealed himself. Matthew made him give back the key that he was using, a key that he just had because he never returned it to Charles. No one lets either of them live that down. Yes, this is a fic I have in the works.
Matthew plans Thomas and Alastair's wedding. Full stop. I've written this in a fic before, but I think Matthew's a fucking amazing party planner and really, really brings it. Decorates a garden with flowers, hires musicians, deals with clothing, the whole 9 yards. Matthew loves it and Thomastair get to enjoy the leadup to their big day with minimal stress.
When Matthew has depressive episodes, Alastair will come to his flat in Marylebone and force him to eat and have water. He'll also clean up the flat if it seems messy and drag him outside (often swearing and struggling) so he can get fresh air. Matthew hates it in the moment, and maybe hates Alastair in the moment a bit, but it helps him get back on his feet and get both his mental and physical health up. He's grateful later.
Besides Thomas, Charles (Past), Sona, and Cordelia, Matthew is the only person that Alastair has actively allowed to see him cry. Matthew was very empathetic and kind.
They eventually have a frank conversation about PTSD, though of course they don't use the term since it didn't exist in the 1900s. Thomas likely orchestrates this conversation because he sees some similarities between the two of them. They figure out that they have similar responses in many situations and bond over it. It helps both of them feel a little less alone.
When Alastair tells Matthew a little more about what happened between him and Charles, Matthew confronts his brother. He tells Charles how disgusting the whole situation was and insists that he leave his friend alone forever. Alastair never found out that Matthew did this, but Charles did in fact never bother him again.
The entire group gets together to play games (specifically James/Cordelia/Thomas/Alastair/Matthew/Matthew's Blurry Wife). When Matthew and Alastair are on opposing teams, the competition gets ridiculously heated because they refuse to lose to each other. Eventually, the others have enough and force them to be on the same team. HUGE mistake. They work together and completely decimate everyone else. They are no longer allowed to team up.
Matthew gets Alastair 2-3 interesting musical instruments from various parts of the world while on his travels. They come with sheet music as well.
Alastair secretly reads some Oscar Wilde plays and essays. He doesn't love them, but he sees why Matthew does, and that's enough. He goes to the theatre with him (along with the James/Cordelia/Thomas/Alastair/Matthew/Matthew's Blurry Wife group). They see Lady Windermere's Fan and Alastair begrudgingly admits he had a good time.
I have a ton more, but don't want to go on all day! Thanks again for the ask. :)
The first time Harry answered a knock at the door of his office and opened the door to find Draco Malfoy standing in front of him he slammed the door in his face immediately.
The second time he opened the door to a knock, about 3 minutes later, and found Draco Malfoy still standing there he said “Go away” very gruffly with a lot of emphasis hoping he could scare him off.
It seemed like this worked very effectively until three days later when he received a letter from a very insistent owl from Auror Malfoy requesting his help on a case. Harry promptly burned the letter and went about his business.
After this he started receiving letters daily inquiring about his presence in Malfoy’s office to participate in very time sensitive and important meetings. Harry didn’t see why Malfoy thought he would meet him in his office if he hadn’t even met with him in his own so he continued to burn the letters. Sometimes if he was feeling extra angry that day he would rip the letters into very tiny pieces before scattering them into the flames. It was a pretty effective anger management technique and quite frankly Harry wondered why he had never tried it before.

Harry receives his 18th letter from Malfoy promptly at 9am on the morning of June second. He’s started his daily ritual of pulverizing the letter into minuscule pieces when he’s interrupted by a knock at the door. Part of him almost hopes to see Malfoy when he opens the door. Slamming the heavy oak in his face had been so enjoyable the last time.
Unfortunately when Harry opens the door he finds not only Malfoy waiting for him but also Kingsley who looks a little pissed off and is clutching what appears to be his own copy of Malfoy’s letter in his left hand.
“So, are you going to let us in?” Kingsley is clearly irritated and he sweeps into Harry’s office before Harry can even respond. Harry is miffed to notice that Kingly has taken his chair behind the desk and Harry is forced to hurriedly transfigure a chair out of the stool he keeps by his bookshelves.
This leaves Malfoy standing awkwardly with nothing left to transfigure and Harry has to bite back a grin at how silly he looks standing ramrod straight and towering over Kingsley at the desk.
“Here Draco.” Kingsley waves his wand and a green velvet armchair appears next to where he is standing. Harry's grin immediately disappears and he petulantly wonders why Malfoy gets to sit in a Slytherin green armchair in the cozy corner of his office when he’s made it abundantly clear that he doesn't want to see as much as his face ever again.
Why are A & B fighting/ why do A & B hate each other?
Yes, I know your characters are enemies/rivals for an enemies/rivals to lovers/friends arc-
But why?
1- A turns out to be the (formerly anonymous) online celebrity B hates.
2- A beats B to a position B had worked her/his/their entire life for.
3- B took the last doughnut that A wanted. (Yes, A is being childish.)
4- A doesn't show up to a very important event in B's life.
5- A bails out at the worst possible minute.
6- A ruins B's chance with her/his/their crush.
7- A does something unintentionally, but B thinks it's deliberate.
8- C ruins A & B's friendship.
9- A moves away right after B and A fight, leading to the issue not being resolved.
10- A accidentally spills a liquid on B's most prized possession.
11- A finds out B was talking about her/him/them behind their back.
12- A takes B's prized possession and forgets to return it, subsequently losing it.
13- A spills coffee over B's favorite outfit.
14- A lies to B, about something that really mattered to B.
15- A is really competitive, and B is the reason A is second in class/in sports/ etc.
16- A has anger management issues and B got on the wrong end on their first day and they'd been fighting ever since.
17- A hates something B represents/reminds A of.
18- A is annoyed of B's prominent habits/quirks.
19- A hates B for no reason, because humans aren't rational creatures.
20- B has something A wants but could never have (acceptance, parently love, etc)
21- B chooses C over A.
22- A finds something personalized they gave B in the dumpster. (Yes. I know, I know- I hate miscommunication as well.)
23- B tried to do something nice but A got hurt.
24- B keeps a secret from A, something that mattered the world to A.
25- B has changed too much- their personality, their behaviour- everything about them; A just can't be with them anymore.

ENEMIES TO FRIENDS/LOVERS IDEAS
Scenarios where your characters start as enemies and end as something else:
Person A is a loner in school and Person B is one of the popular kids who always pick on Person A for no reason. Because of this, Person A despises Person B and assumes that the two of them must have nothing in common. Then one day Person A logs into their fan account where their identity is anonymous (you can choose the thing that they’re a fan of) to see that they have a new follower, Person B.
Person A and Person B are co-workers who hate each other. They’re always competing with each other at work and they’re always getting into arguments. Then one day Person A is leaving an appointment with their therapist when they happen to see Person B waiting to see the same therapist in the lobby.
Person A and Person B were on rival sports teams in high school. After graduation, they both end up unknowingly going to the same college. On the first day Person A gets to their dorm room to find their new roommate, Person B, already unpacking.
Person A and Person B are both actors. They’ve met a few times in passing but they don’t really know each other. Person A comes off as a snob to Person B so Person B has no desire to get to know them. Then they both get cast as love interests in a film and after spending some time together on set, Person B realizes that they were wrong about Person A.
Person A and Person B were best friends in high school until they had an ugly falling out with each other that turned them into enemies. Years later when they’re out of school and have nothing to do with each other, Person A still hates Person B and assumes that Person B hates them too. Then one day Person A gets a giant text message from Person B apologizing for everything that happened between them.
