Prompt - 'I knew you were trouble when you walked in.'
You had known from the beginning that Loki was trouble, the moment Thor had brought him back to Earth and he had entered the tower with that cocky grin and smug attitude. You knew then he was trouble but you couldn’t help yourself.
It wasn’t a shock when you realised you had feelings for him though you did curse yourself for it. Loki had never given you any indication that he felt the same way as you, hell half the time he acted like he didn’t care at all and for some reason you liked that. So really it shouldn’t have been a surprise that you were on the opposite side of the scale, you falling hard for him and him taking a step back.
You had thought you were doing a pretty good job at keeping your feelings a secret, not wanting anybody to find out but being a part of The Avengers, being so close to them on a daily basis, meant it was hard to keep secrets from each other. That’s why you weren’t as surprised as you probably should have been when Tony called you down to his workshop under the guise of a new suit.
He showed you all the new gadgets he had installed and waited until there was a silence before he asked you;
“You know what you’re doing?”
“Huh?” You said, looking up at him, eyebrows furrowed together in confusion as you looked from the suit to him.
“C’mon kid,” Tony said with a huff of laughter, “Loki.”
You stayed silent, raising an eyebrow as you waited for more information but apparently that was all the explanation you were getting.
“What about Loki?” You asked, watching as Tony rolled his eyes.
“I see the way you look at him,” He told you, scrunching his nose up as he did, causing you to laugh, “You know what you’re getting yourself into?” He asked again.
“Tony, trust me, there’s nothing to get myself into.” You told him firmly and you weren’t lying, there was nothing between you and Loki, no matter how much you wished otherwise.
Tony just laughed as wrapped an arm around you, letting his head gently knock against yours as he led you out of the workshop and stepped into the lift with you.
“What am I gonna do with you, kid?” He asked, causing you to roll your eyes but there was a smile on your face too. “Just be careful, you hear me?”
“Aren’t I always?” You grinned up at him, letting out a laugh as he shot you a look.
“Get out of here, Y/L/N.” He said as he playfully pushed you away as the lift door opened.
You shot him one last smile before heading over to the common area. As you joined Clint, taking a tablet into your hands and beginning to scroll, you pushed all thoughts of Loki out of your head.

You sat alone in your room, staring blankly ahead at the wall, tears pooling in your eyes but you refused to let them fall. It had been a bad mission, god was it a bad mission. It should’ve been an easy situation to defuse, a few robots that had appeared from who knows where and began to shoot lasers all throughout New York.
There were more casualties than there should have been that day.
Loki had heard all about the mission from Thor before he came to find you, JARVIS being more helpful towards him than ever but he figured the AI was looking out for you as he gave your location up easily.
Loki knew that you had been the one to defeat one of the final bots after being assured that the area was cleared but the bot had ended up killing several civilians that hadn’t been accounted for.
He stood in the doorway, frowning at how pale you looked sitting on your bed. He wished he knew how to help but what could he say to make this better, was there anything that could be said to make this better?
“Hey,” He said softly, watching as you jumped despite his soft tone. “My apologies, I didn’t mean to startle you.”
You didn’t reply, instead you nodded and forced a shaky smile onto your face.
Loki continued to watch you, not knowing what the right words for this situation were. The two of you had known each other for a while now but he had never let himself get too close to you, everything about you intrigued him but he knew he couldn’t act upon that so instead he kept your friendship at arms length and didn’t let himself get caught up in you.
Which was working great until now, now he wished he had gotten as close as possible to you because maybe then he could find the right words to say, maybe then he could give you the hug you looked like you so desperately needed.
Instead he went for a tactic that would leave everything to you, you could decide how little or how much you wanted to lean on him as you carried this hurt.
“Care for a drink?” He asked, holding up a bottle towards you and smiling as you looked up at him in confusion.
The silence spread on for a few moments and Loki was convinced that it meant no but when you slowly nodded he shot you a comforting smile.
Loki took that as all the permission he needed to enter your bedroom, letting the door shut behind him was a soft click. You pushed yourself up on the bed, continuing to watch Loki’s movements in confusion.
You knew your feelings for Loki but he had always made it clear that he didn’t feel anything, even if he never said it. The two of you may have been friends but there was definitely a difference in how he treated you to how he treated the others, like he didn’t want to get as close to you.
So why was he asking you if you wanted to have a drink with him?
As confused as you were you were also glad for the distraction, maybe that’s why you had said yes despite the confusion because your thoughts were now on Loki and not the terrible mission you had just endured.
It wasn’t long before you and Loki were settled down, one drink in and things felt a little awkward.
Three drinks in, however, both of you had relaxed enough and were grinning at each other as you spoke about nothing important. Loki wasn’t going to be the one to bring up today's events, right now his only goal was to take your mind as far away from it as possible.
A few more drinks in and personal space between Loki and you had gone. You leaned your head on his shoulder as you laughed and his arm ended up around your waist. It wasn’t long before you tilted your head up to look at him, the expression on his face changed immediately, the grin fell into a soft smile as he glanced from your eyes to your lips.
He leaned down, giving you time to pull away and when you didn’t he let his lips meet yours. The kiss was soft, it was hesitant, obviously testing the waters, and then it wasn’t. Then it was messy and heated and the two of you were pulling away panting for breath.
Loki stared down at you for a moment with wild eyes before his lips connected with yours again. He pulled you down, hovering on top of you as he trailed kisses down your neck and it wasn’t long before your mind was well and truly off the mission, the only thought you had now was Loki.

You woke up the next morning with a groan, the light shone far too brightly through the curtains and you knew despite feeling exhausted you couldn’t go back to sleep but the bed was warm so you made no move to get up just yet.
You lay there, in your bed, remembering the night before.
It was definitely a mistake but you couldn’t find it within yourself to regret it. You’d wanted Loki for so long and if this was the only way you had him, just one amazing night with him then you were going to savour it.
You opened your eyes and frowned as you saw the empty bed. Was Loki’s plan for him to be gone by the time you woke up, to just pretend that nothing had happened? You couldn’t help but roll your eyes as you pushed yourself from the bed and began to change.
It didn’t take you long before you were dressed and heading into the kitchen on your floor. As you stepped out of the bedroom you froze as you saw Loki plating up two plates of food, him looking up at you with that smile of his.
“Morning, I made breakfast.” He told you, lifting the pan in his hands up as proof.
You felt your eyebrows knit together in confusion, not quite sure how this was going to play out. Just two minutes ago you had been so sure that Loki had left, ready to forget all about last night and instead you found him making breakfast?
“Thank you,” You said softly, taking a seat when he pulled it out for you.
Breakfast was a fairly quiet affair and it wasn’t until both your utensils were down that he spoke up.
“About last night,” He began before pausing, not knowing quite what to say despite going over it all morning. “I shouldn’t have come on to you like that, we were drunk and your head wasn’t in the right place after your mission. I shouldn’t have taken advantage of that and for that I’m sorry.”
“Hey, I knew what I was doing,” you told him, watching as he looked at you with wide eyes, a small frown on his face. “I knew what I was doing, ok? Trust me I may have been drunk and, yeah, the mission got to me, but I would have told you no if I didn’t want it.”
“So you don’t regret last night?” He asked, looking over at you with an unreadable expression.
You hesitated for a moment, you’d admitted as much but actually saying it out loud left you feeling unsure. You weren’t sure how he felt about last night, he hadn’t given much away about his feelings other than his own doubts of how willing you were.
You’d meant what you said, no matter how drunk or emotional you were, if you didn’t want his advances you would have told him, trusting that he would leave it at that. But you hadn’t said no, you wanted that night, if that was all you were allowed with Loki then you were glad you’d had it.
“No, I don’t.” You answered after a few moments of silence and you watched his face closely looking for any indication as to how he felt but he gave nothing away.
“Me neither,” He finally admitted softly, looking up so his eyes met yours. “So, where do we go from here?”
Before you could reply an alarm sounded through the tower, alerting you to another Avengers level threat, usually that was not a sound you wanted to hear but now you were relieved, having no idea how to answer Loki’s question.
You shot him a smile before you were up and out of the door.

As the months passed, you and Loki became closer and closer to the point where you were spending most of your free time together, the two of you went out for dinner together, no matter the time the other was always there to listen.
The team also noticed, they watched as Loki and you moved in sync with each other, whether it be training together in the gym or making breakfast in the common area kitchen. Tony wasn’t completely sold on whatever was happening between the two of you but he couldn’t deny that Loki had toned down his animosity towards the others and he especially couldn’t deny the smile on your face whenever Loki was around.
Months in and you and Loki had yet to define what was happening between you. You wanted to ask him, so badly, what this was but every time you tried you ended up backing out of the conversation, not ready to lose this closeness.
The two of you had slept together several more times and the time you spent together alone felt so much like dates that you were left feeling so uncertain.
On paper the two of you had been dating for months but in reality you had no idea what was happening.
“I told you from the start I didn’t think this was a good idea,” Tony said after he had pulled you aside and told you to talk to him after seeing you take your frustration and confusion out on a punching bag. You told him everything from the first time you slept with Loki on that drunken night all the way up until now. He sat and listened, patiently waiting until you were done. He could tell how much this was eating away at you, how much you needed to talk to somebody and even if you didn’t like the advice he had to offer, he was glad you trusted him with this. “But we both know you’re not gonna listen to me, so this is just a mistake you’re gonna have to make.”
You rolled your eyes but there was a smile on your lips. You knew Tony hated the idea of you and Loki together, not trusting Loki at all and not wanting the God to drag you down with him when things inevitably went south.
“Can you give me some helpful advice please?” You asked, causing Tony to laugh.
“Sure thing, kid.” He grinned, “You already know what you have to do. You gotta talk to him, Y/N/N, you want this thing to go somewhere you have to start at the beginning, define the relationship and if he says something you don’t like, you leave.”
Tony made it sound so simple but you knew it wouldn’t be, when was it ever that simple?
You knew why you kept backing out of having the conversation, it was because despite how Loki had been acting towards you, you actually had no idea how he felt. Sure the two of you had gotten closer, sure you went out to the movies and to dinner and the such and yeah Loki showed up at your door with take out and movies but at the end of the day you didn’t know if he wanted to be with you.
You could admit, even if it was only to yourself, that you had fallen hard for the man. The way Loki made you feel, nobody had ever made you feel like this before. Tony was right, even though it would be way more complicated than he made it sound, ultimately you knew he was right.
Tony watched your face shift from unsure to determined, he knew his words had gotten through to you. Honestly he didn’t have the best feeling about this but he knew how you felt and he knew you needed to do this, needed closure on how Loki felt.
All Tony could do was be there for you when things went to pieces.

It had taken a few days but you were finally going to talk to Loki. You had both invested too much time into each other for him not to like you, the way you were with one another, that wasn’t how friends acted.
You hadn’t told him you were coming, the two of you had long since had an open invitation in place, no matter the time. It wasn’t rare anymore for one of you to show up in the others room unannounced.
In the elevator you felt your nerves spike and ended up pacing in the hallway for an extra ten minutes trying to convince yourself that you could do this, you needed to do this. Despite the nerves though you had a pretty good feeling that Loki felt the same and that was the hope you clung to as you walked up to his door.
Again you paused but not for long. You let your hand close around the cold door knob and touch a deep, calming breath before pushing it open. In that moment it felt like a number of things happened at once, too fast for you to comprehend but before you knew it you were in the lift and heading down to the workshop.
Upon opening the door you saw Loki and a woman dressed in Asgardian clothes joined together at the lips, her legs around his waist as he pinned her to the wall, fingers tangled in her hair as her arms wrapped around his shoulders.
They both turned at the sound of the door opening, Loki looking at you with wide, pleading eyes, letting the woman’s legs drop from him. The woman, who you now recognised as the lady Thor brought to Earth once or twice a month to check on Loki’s progress and take notes to take back to Asgard, was also looking at you with wide eyes but before either of them could say anything you were gone. Loki tried to follow you out but by the time he made his way out the door, the elevator had already closed.

“You were right.” Were the first words out of your mouth as Tony looked up at you as you walked through the door.
He frowned as he took in the tears streaming down your face, mascara mixed with tears.
“C’mere kid,” He said as he pulled you into his arms, wrapping you in a tight hug.
You couldn’t say just how long the two of you stood in the doorway for but eventually you pulled away. Tony didn’t let you go far, taking your face in his palms and wiping away the tears. You smiled at him shakily and he gave you a sympathetic smile back, before pressing his lips to your head and guiding you further into the room.
It wasn’t long before you were tucked up against him on the sofa, a cold glass of water in your hands, courtesy of one of the bots. Tony hadn’t pushed you, hadn’t asked what had happened, he just let you take comfort in his presence whilst your mind played the scene over and over again.
“He was kissing that Asgardian handler.” You finally said and Tony’s eyes widened in shock, he hadn’t had high hopes for Loki but that was honestly the last thing he thought you were going to say.
“I’m sorry, kid.” He said. There were no words to make you feel better and he hated that. Ever since you’d joined the team Tony had taken you under his wing, training with you, helping you out in the lab once he realised you had an interest in building tech, overall he had taken his time and gone above and beyond to make sure you were happy and never wanting anything. Overtime he came to think of you as his own kid, he was always there for you when you needed him, now was no exception.
“Thank you for not saying I told you so.” You said with a sad laugh, eyes filling with tears again as you shook your head.
Tony couldn’t help but smile at that. He knew there was no warning you away from Loki, he had known from the second he saw that look on your face that you were going to do what you wanted even if he told you that you were going to get hurt. As much as he wanted to protect you, he knew you had to make some mistakes on your own and he just had to be here to pick up the pieces.
“You really think I’d say that?” Tony snorted, smiling as you turned your head on his chest to look up at him with a raised eyebrow. “I knew he was trouble but when do you ever listen to me?”
“Maybe I’ll start.” You shot back, a small but real smile on your face.
“Somehow I doubt that, kid.” Despite everything with Loki, you were thankful to have Tony. You wished you had listened to him from the beginning, you hated feeling like this. You knew the two of you hadn’t defined what was happening between you but you never would have thought he’d be kissing other girls.
Right now all you wanted was to push every thought of Loki out of your mind and there was no-one better suited for the job than Tony Stark.

Prompt - ‘It feels like the perfect night for breakfast at midnight.’
Notes - happy new year!! (this was supposed to be uploaded yesterday but tumblr broke again)
When Rossi informed you that he was hosting a New Year’s Eve party you couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief. Lately everything had been piling up, deadline after deadline, meeting after meeting, everything fell all at once and you found yourself constantly two steps behind where you needed to be.
Thankfully you had managed to get on top of things for the time being, though you still had a to-do list that was way too long.
A David Rossi party was exactly what you needed right now. A chance to dress to the nines, have your hair and makeup done for once instead of rolling out of bed ten minutes before your morning class or thirty minutes before your shift started.
It was a chance to forget about everything for the night. A chance to forget about the stress of essays and research, a chance to forget about the heartbreak of your last breakup that still followed you around despite how hard you tried to push it away. It was a chance to have fun.
When New Year’s Eve finally rolled around you couldn’t help but smile as you woke up with something to look forward to. Today was the first time in as long as you could remember that you were doing something fun and weren’t holed up in the library with piles of research books.
You’d bought a new outfit for the occasion, nothing in your closet seemed appropriate for Rossi’s party. It was fun and you couldn’t help but smooth your hands down the fabric as you looked in the mirror, makeup perfectly applied thanks to the artist, you looked amazing.
A buzz at your door had you quickly throwing your shoes on and grabbing a small bag before you headed out of your apartment. You couldn’t help but laugh as you saw the limounse Rossi had sent, it looked so out of place in this run down part of town.
You thanked the driver as he opened the door for you and it wasn’t long until you were pulling up at Rossi’s.
The front door was open and the party seemed to be getting started if the amount of people already there was any indication. Everybody seemed to get the dress code memo as they all looked incredible. Rossi had gone all out on the decorations too, sparing no expenses.
You made your way further into the house, plucking a glass of something from one of the waiters as you looked around the room. You were definitely one of the younger people there and other than Rossi you had a feeling you wouldn’t know many other people but that didn’t bother you.
“Y/N!” A voice called causing you to turn around. You smiled as you saw Rossi making his way over to you, a grin on his own face. “Oh, it’s so good to see you, kiddo.” He said when he was close enough, pressing his lips to your cheeks before pulling you into a hug.
You let yourself sink into the hug and if you squeezed him slightly tighter than usual, well who was judging? Rossi knew you were having a rough few months, from the breakup with the douchebag he had never liked to your ever growing work pile. He was glad you agreed to come tonight so easily because he had planned on getting you here one way or another.
Besides, there was somebody he had to introduce you to.
“Hi Dave.” You beamed up at him when the two of you finally pulled away, Rossi’s arm staying around your shoulder as he led you out of the room and into the garden, all the while chatting away and asking you questions. You were relieved that you could finally tell him things were better.
“There’s some people I want to introduce you to,” He told you before smirking, “one in particular actually.” You watched him smirk and rolled your eyes.
“Dave,” You began with an over exaggerated sigh, “I came here to have fun not for you to set me up.”
Rossi couldn’t help but laugh, not having a chance to respond as the group turned at the sound, smiling over at the pair of you.
“Everybody this is Y/N, kid you know Aaron and this is Derek, JJ, Emily, Penelope and this here is our very own genius Doctor Spencer Reid.” Everybody smiled and waved at the introductions and there was no mystery as to which one Rossi was trying to set you up with.
You smiled back, watching as Spencer smiled bashfully at being the only one singled out and you couldn’t help but think he was cute, not that Rossi would ever hear you admit it.
“So how do you two know each other?” JJ asked.
“Yeah Rossi, she’s a bit too young to be wife number seven.” Derek grinned causing everybody to laugh.
“Three wives,” Rossi said, wagging his finger at the group, “three wives is a very reasonable number. As for Y/N,” Here Rossi paused looking at you and giving you the chance to tell the story or change the version of events.
You smiled at him, thankful for the chance but these people were his team and they had all seen the type of things that had happened to you on a daily basis.
“I met Rossi before he retired from the BAU, one of his final cases actually.” You told them, giving the nod to Rossi that he could take over.
“The unsub was killing families and Y/N’s was the last family he targeted, from there he went off script and took the kid.” Rossi gave your shoulder a squeeze and you leaned into him.
It still hurt to think of them, of course it did. It hurt to think of what that man had done to them and to you but eventually it got easier to deal with. After Rossi had got to you before the unsub could do much more damage he extended his stay, taking vacation time he had never used, and stayed with you everyday as you recovered in the hospital. He was the reason you weren’t so afraid anymore, without him you don’t know how far you would’ve gotten.
There were murmurs of apologies and sympathetic looks which you brushed off with a wave of your hand.
“It was a long time ago. I’m just glad I had you.” You said, leaning your head against Rossi’s shoulder, missing the soft look that spread across his face before he placed a kiss on your head.
“Well now that that’s out of the way,” Rossi spoke, “Who’s ready to drink?”
The cheers he got in return were all that were needed to get things started.

You were surprised at how easily you fit in with the team, though the drinks probably, definitely, helped with that. To begin with you had stuck to Rossi’s side but eventually you found yourself relaxing and it wasn’t long before the girls took notice and you were pulled over to their sofa and were taking shots with them, laughing all the while.
Eventually you felt the room spin and you were ready to sit the next few rounds out. You stood up before stumbling over to one of the emptier sofa’s that your group occupied and sat down on it, not taking note of who else was there.
“You okay?” A voice asked softly, causing you to look up and see Spencer looking at you with a smile.
You hummed as you sat back, letting your head hit the back of the soft as you smiled back at him, eyes closed to fight against the dizziness. You didn’t feel the sofa shift as Spencer stood up and didn’t take note of how long he was gone for but the next time you opened your eyes Spencer was holding a cold glass of water out towards you.
“You should drink.” He told you, smiling as you shook your head. “One of the reasons you’re feeling dizzy right now is because of the dehydration. Even though you're drinking, alcohol actually doesn’t hydrate you so it’s best if you drink water in between drinks. Also, it’ll help with the hangover you’re going to have tomorrow.” He grinned at you as you looked at him through squinted eyes.
It took a couple more seconds before you took the water with a scrunch of your nose but after the first few sips you ended up happily gulping the drink down, feeling much better already.
“Huh, you really are a genius.” You told him, enjoying the quiet laugh you got in return.
“So they tell me.” He chuckled as he took the glass off you to place on the table.
“You’re not drunk?” You asked him. You’d taken note of the fact that even though he was drinking he was taking it easier than the rest of you. Whilst you and the girls had done way too many shots and Hotch, Derek and Rossi were making their way through a scotch that probably cost more than your apartment, Spencer was still nursing his second drink of the night.
“I don’t really drink.” He told you, watching as you nodded.
As the two of you continued to talk you missed Hotch, Derek and Rossi watching you with matching smiles. For months now Rossi had been trying to hatch a plan to introduce you to Spencer but with your workload it hadn’t happened. Now as he watched the two of you shift closer to each other, heads bent down and talking so softly none of them could hear the words, he knew he’d made the right call.
You and Spencer spent most of the night on the sofa, chatting away and getting to know each other. The cold air and water was definitely helping and you didn’t feel quite so drunk so you were able to enjoy the soft conversation and retain the information he was giving you.
“Oh, oh, quick everybody!” Both you and Spencer startled as Penelope exclaimed loudly, pulling you out of your own little bubble. “The countdown is starting! You’re mine, Derek Morgan.” She grinned, raising her eyebrows at him.
“Oh baby girl, you best believe I’ve been waiting all year for this kiss.” He grinned right back at her.
“It’s midnight?” Spencer murmured, shocked at how fast time had seemed to move as he spoke to you, trying to learn as much as he could about you.
“Hell yeah it’s midnight pretty boy.” Derek said, causing you to giggle. Spencer looked over at you with a smile as he stood up, ready to follow the rest of the team to the living room for the ball drop.
He held a hand out of you, something which didn’t go unnoticed by the team even with all the alcohol in their system, but you were oblivious to the looks as you took his hand and let him lead you to the living room, neither of you letting go.
Spencer managed to grab two flutes of champagne just as people started counting down from ten, handing it to you.
“10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Happy New Year!” With that people erupted into cheers, couples around you were kissing, friends embraced each other and you were surprised to find you didn’t feel the least bit lonely.
You would have thought that after the break up, after the stress and isolation of the last few months you would have felt so lonely reigning in the New Year but right now, Rossi to your side and Spencer’s hand in yours it was hard to imagine being lonely.
“Happy New Year, Y/N,” Spencer said softly, barely heard above the music and cheers but as his lips pressed to your cheek you heard them perfectly.
“Happy New Year, Spencer.” You replied just as quietly, a smile you couldn’t fight back on your face as he pulled away.
Spencer was pulled out of the bubble the two of you created once more as Derek threw an arm around him.
“You got a kiss for me, pretty boy?” He grinned, taking great delight in watching Spencer flush.
Your smile got even wider if it were at all possible even as you tried to wipe it off your face as Rossi wrapped his own arm around your shoulders, pulling you close and kissing your temple.
“Happy New Year, kiddo. Something tells me you’re gonna have a lot to thank me for this year.” He smirked, eyes darting from Spencer to you.
You rolled your eyes but couldn’t help but hope he was right. Judging by the shy smile Spencer gave you at the words he had overheard, he wanted it too.
“Pancakes!” Penelope yelled randomly causing everyone to look at her. “I want pancakes!”
“Where-“ JJ hiccuped, “where even does pancakes at midnight?”
You watched Penelope’s smile fall as nobody spoke up.
“I know a place.” You finally said, causing Penelope’s head to snap around to you, grin firmly back in place as she made her way over to you.
“You’re my new best friend.” She declared, ignoring the protests from the others.
It wasn’t long before the lot of you were piling into one of the many cars waiting out front, Spencer grabbing your hand gently and sitting you down next to him. He didn’t know what it was about you, usually he hesitated to touch even the people closest to him but with you he didn’t even think about it.
Your hand in his felt right, his lips against your cheek had felt right. There was something about you he so desperately wanted to know and he could only hope that you wanted to know him too.
As you all sat around a table, various chairs having to be dragged over to accommodate the group, you couldn’t help but smile. You felt so comfortable around these people, each of them welcoming you in without any hesitation. The table was filled with so many different breakfast foods, fireworks could be heard in the distance and as Spencer took your hand in his once more you couldn’t help but think that this was going to be a good year.

Febuwhump Prompt - blood loss
Prompt - ‘A world without you seemed impossible.’
You found yourself pacing the length of the room, getting lost in the repetitive motion of back and forth, back and forth. The dread of what was to come invaded your mind, you were unable to think about anything else. It felt like every time you closed your eyes all you could see was a pale, lifeless body lying there covered in blood.
You felt yourself shuddering as the image assaulted your mind once more.
You couldn’t say how much time had passed before a hand on your shoulder startled you. Your head snapped around to see Rick standing there, a kind smile on his face that did nothing to hide his own worry.
“He’s gonna be okay.” He told you but you could see how he doubted his own words.
Shaking your head, your bit your lip not wanting to direct your anger and fear at the wrong person. You’d seen Daryl hurt plenty of times, you’d been with him since the beginning, you’d seen him bleeding from deep wounds or simply covered in bruises but this…this was different.
This time you didn’t know if he’d survive.
Inside the clinic Denise worked hard to sew him back together, desperately doing what she could without an entire hospital supply room to support her. You and Rick had long been kicked out of the room, distracting her as you watched every move she made.
“You don’t know that.” Was all you managed to say, eyes flickering over to the closed door.
Daryl and a small group had headed out that morning on what should have been an easy supply run and returned hours later laying a bloody Daryl on the floor as they called for help. At that point you couldn’t see the injuries that were hidden by clothing but there was no hiding the blood that had stained most of his shirt.
You had watched as the gates opened, stood frozen once you saw him before running over to the growing group as fast as you could, cupping Daryl’s cheeks in your hands, desperately pleading with him to wake up. Rick was the one who pulled you away so they could get him up to the clinic.
Watching as he was stripped had you turning pale and your stomach twisting as you saw the wounds. There were deep slashes scattered across his torso, bruises forming in the shape of boots. You choked on a sob as Rick cupped the back of the head, hiding your face in his chest as you continued to cry.
It wasn’t long until the two of you were told to wait outside and neither of you were planning on leaving any time soon.
The hours dragged by, you’d gone from restless and pacing to collapsing into the chair beside Rick, the man smiling sympathetically at you as he wrapped an arm around you, pulling you into his chest.
The two of you sat in silence, neither having any comforting words for the other as you waited for any news on the man you both loved. Despite everything you’d been through since the apocalypse started you could honestly say this was one of the worst moments, completely helpless and not knowing whether the man who had been by your side since the beginning, the man who was the only reason you had survived this long, the man who had grumbled and muttered when you followed him from the walker infested warehouse but had somehow along the way ended up falling for you, would survive or not.
A world without Daryl Dixon seemed impossible.
The door to the clinic opening pulled you out of your thoughts as your head snapped up to see an exhausted looking Denise standing there, her mouth opening and closing a few times but no words came out.
You felt your blood run cold, mind jumping to one conclusion at her lack of words. Your eyes pooled with tears but thankfully Rick spoke up before you could spiral much further.
“Denise,” He prompted softly, not sure if he wanted to hear the next words out of her mouth either.
“He’s stable,” She started with causing you to let out a sob of relief, your hand covering your mouth. “But I can’t make any promises, Rick. He could be fine or it could be touch and go.”
You blocked out the rest of her words, the only ones you needed to hear were that he was stable, he was alive. That’s all that mattered. Daryl wouldn’t die, he couldn’t…he’d be fine.
He had to be fine.
“You can see him now.” You heard Denise say, Rick and you both standing before making your way into the room.
You paused in the doorway, more tears falling from your eyes as you looked at him. He looked completely lifeless, skin almost grey as he lay there, shirtless and bandaged up. Needles poked into him as they gave him what he needed to stay alive.
You forced a shaky smile up at Rick as he lay a comforting hand on your shoulder before you walked further into the room and took a seat on the edge of the plastic chair next to the bed.
You’d never seen him like this and you were terrified, hesitating as you lifted your hand, scared that one touch would be all it took before the heart monitor beeped to nothing. You closed your eyes and gently took his hand in yours, waiting for something to happen and breathing out a sigh of relief as nothing did.
“Daryl,” You whispered, leaning down and resting your lips against his hand before pressing a lingering kiss to them. “Please wake up, you have to wake up.” You pleaded with the unconscious man, aware your words would have very little effect but needing to say something.
You looked up as you heard another chair scrap on the other side of the room and watched as Rick sat opposite you, mirroring you as he took Daryl’s hand in his.
“You heard the lady,” Rick smiled, “You gotta wake up, brother.”
You and Rick sat together in near silence for the night, neither one of you wanting to leave the other or Daryl alone. It was a long night and lonely night when Daryl failed to move but you were glad to have a friend.
Days continued to pass without a hint of movement from Daryl. The whole time you refused to move from his side, Rick had to after the first night, too many duties to attend to but if it were up to him he’d have been in that room with the two of you. Though he did stop by often enough to make sure that you were taking care of yourself.
Which you weren’t.
You weren’t holding up and as each day passed you felt yourself losing hope. Food wasn’t even a thought in your mind and if it wasn’t for Rick stopping by several times a day with food then you knew you wouldn’t have eaten anything, even with Rick’s help you only had a few bites at most a day.
Thankfully some of the colour had started to return to Daryl’s face even if he had yet to wake up, Denise said that was a good thing, his body was working on healing itself. It showed Daryl was fighting.
He was also taking to the blood transfusion that she had had to administer. She spoke about red blood cell transfusion, gave you the rundown of the procedure but you tuned her out, could hardly stand to listen to her talk about how much blood Daryl had lost, about how he might still take a turn for the worst.
You spent most of the day just watching him, watching the weak rise and fall of his chest, watching his heart beat on the monitor, watching his eyes to see if there was even a flicker of movement. If you hadn’t had Daryl memorised before you did know, you knew the man like the back of your hand, hell better than that.
There hadn’t been a day that passed in which you hadn’t cried. Everyday that hope faded more and more until it felt like you were drowning. You refused to let go of Daryl's hand, praying that you’d feel it twitch one of these days, praying he’d curl his fingers around yours. Daryl’s hand in yours felt like an anchor, the one thing that kept you holding on.
“How’s he doing today?” Rick asked as he walked into the clinic, smiling sadly as you didn’t even look up at him.
You only had eyes for Daryl.
“Same as yesterday and the day before.” You said bitterly, wanting him to get better so you could leave and get your hands on the Saviours.
Rick watched your emotions play out on your face, understanding what you were feeling all too well. He wanted to rip the face of every saviour, wanted Negan’s head on a stick but he knew they had to be smart, knew that if they struck now they’d lose. Negan would be expecting them.
Rick was snapped out of his thoughts when he heard you let out a surprised gasp, he looked to you, a question on his lips when he paused, watching as your eyes lit up for the first time in nearly a week.
“Hey,” You said, huffing a laugh of absolute disbelief, “You’re ok, you’re ok,” You repeat like a mantra.
The feeling of Daryl’s fingers tightening around your own was just about the best feeling in the world. The complete feeling of relief that ran throughout your body made you feel lighter than you had in days, like a weight had been suddenly and breathtakingly removed from your back.
Rick watched in amazement as his best friend scrunched his eyes closed hard before he tried to pry them out, Y/N watching his every move like a hawk. It took a few attempts before Daryl managed to open his eyes, blinking against the harsh lights before his eyes settled on you.
At this point your eyes were filled, yet again, with tears but this time they were tears of disbelief, tears of happiness, tears of fear as you realised how close you’d come to losing the most important person in your life.
“Y/N,” He managed to grumble out before he started coughing, causing you to move, quickly grabbing your cup of water and guiding it up to his lips, helping him get the water down carefully.
Once he was finished you put the cup back and moved yourself onto the bed, being careful of his torso as you did so. He looked up at you, immediately noticing the dark circles under your eyes and the worry that was written across your face plain as day.
“Ya need t’sleep, baby.” He croaked out causing you to let out a watery laugh, the man nearly died and here he was still more worried about you than he was himself.
“Needed to make sure you were ok.” You told him, letting your hand gently reach up and cup his cheek, smiling shakily as he leaned into the touch.
“M’okay.” He assured you, turning his face into your palm and placing a soft, barely there kiss upon it.
“You nearly died.” You told him with a choked sob, desperately trying to swallow down tears.
Daryl’s gaze shifted from you over to Rick, who stood forgotten by the door feeling like an intruder. Rick shot him a shaky smile which was returned weakly before Daryl turned his attention back to you.
“S’gonna be ok, gonna get the bastards.” He told you, watching as laughed and nodded along with his words. “But you gotta sleep, darlin’.”
Those words had you falling in love with the man all over again, this idiotic, absolutely selfless man who put you before him every single day, even when he was practically on his death bed only days ago.
You couldn’t help but smile at him, a smile that was only reserved for him, eyes soft and lips upturned with a tilt of your head. It was the smile Daryl loved most, one only he could draw from you.
Carefully you leaned down, your lips brushing against his so softly. It was exactly what you needed, the feelings of his lips moving against yours, proof he was alive. You could finally breathe properly.
Eventually you pulled back, resting your forehead on his, causing him to smile up at you. He managed to lift his hand up, barely hiding a wince from you, and rested it on your cheek, letting his fingertips run along your cheekbone.
“I love you,” you whispered, swallowing hard around the lump in your throat, he was ok.
“I love you too, darlin’.” He told you, just as softly, the two of you in your own little world, so absorbed in each other you didn’t notice Rick slipping out of the room with a smile of his own, glad that his two best friends had found each other whilst the world around you went to hell.
