Henry: Shawn, no!
Shawn: what?
Henry: Sorry, force of habit
Henry: Gus, no!
Please forgive the image quality
EDIT: I found something for Gus.
he’s a teller of tales
Psych is the show of all time because instead of breaking up the friend group to make a point about how sometimes in life friendships grow and change and take people in different directions, it keeps the friend group together even though the friendships grow and change and take people in different directions
Lassie taking out his annoyance on Henry cause deep down he’s actually worried sick about Shawn being okay oh I’m gonna throw up
Psych – 5.06: Viagra Falls
psych episode where shawn begins to have psychic premonitions (carbon monoxide poisoning)
Bruce Wayne x Reader: Incorrect Quotes - 2
Y/N: "Thank you for walking me back."
Bruce: "My pleasure."
Y/N: *sees shadow inside her house and pauses* "I think someone's inside the house.."
Bruce: *creeps over to porch silently. Looks at Y/N and points to his eyes with two fingers then points at the rooftop, forming a plan.*
Y/N: *confused* "You want me to stab you in the eyes on the rooftop?"
One of my fav Psych (2006) gags is when Henry will just be vibin, living his best life, and then BOOM there is Shawn Being Shawn.
Enjoying the morning news? Surprise! Yes that’s your idiot son now running for mayor. Are you just trying to enjoy your favourite Spanish drama? BOOM how about Shawn dressed as FedEx driver enters on stage left.
Pretty much everything Shawn does can be pinpointed back to his childhood, and it's sad too see because most of his toxic traits could have been mended if his parents just had a bit of stability, or just where a little less controlling when he was younger.
His relationship with henry for example is one of the most obvious pointers to why Shawn is the way he is.
Shawn HATES losing, he hates not being on top and he hates not being the centre of attention. Even though some of this is ego, a lot of this is to do with self worth issues as well which is why he gets so irritable when people 'beat' him.
One time this behaviour really stuck out to me like a sore thumb was an episode or two after "from earth to starbucks". In the episode itself , shawn helps lassie with his mental health. he gets it so he feels as though he can solve cases again, and as a result of his confidence boast Lassiter really DOES start solving cases on his own much better than he was before. Evethough Shawn clearly was happy for him at first, and does care a whole lot about Lassiter than he would say out loud, a few episodes after when Lassie starts getting TOO good, Shawn starts acting pretty toxic about him and competitive. Which is a little paradoxical when originally he wanted him to be better, and do better than he was before. I'm pretty sure he does anyway cuz i remember watched a few eps after being like "why is he doing that, i thought he wanted him to do better?".
Regardless, Shawn starts getting hostile to people "better" than him because his dad basically engraved into him that if you are anything other than a winner , you are a loser and you see this all the way from episode 1. When shawn wants cake, he has to get all the hats in the room perfect otherwise he won't get anything. This same thing comes up again when he goes to his dad much older now to ask for help. he has to "win" the hat game in order to get anything out of his father. No matter if his dad had good intentions or not with it, mostly only rewarding shawn when he wins and being so intense about being 'the perfect cop' MADE shawn hate being anything other than the top of the top. the best of the best. Especially when it came to police work.
It's why he gets hostile over any form of competition, and even gets more hostile when people in his life show more interest in anyone but him. He does it with Jules, he does it with Lassiter, and i think he may even do it to gus at some stage. Jules it was her boyfriends, because he viewed himself as the 'best' to be with her. He was on top, so he should be the one to be her boyfriend right..? Then with Lassiter, there are two guys that are somewhat similar to shawn, are good at police work and Lassie clearly admires a lot which makes Shawn pretty heated and sulky that Lassie is no longer looking to him. With gus he got annoyed because Lassiter started spending time with him and 'took away' his best friend from him when be believed gus was HIS friend, not Lassies.
life doesn't work as black and white as 'winner and loser' .People don't have to be the 'best of the best 'to 'earn' love and appreciation, which seems to confuse and aggravate Shawn. It sort of makes him insecure. If people like them more, they...must be better than him because the 'best' are only deserving of appreciation. Well, in his eyes anyway. I think some part of him knows thats insanity as he only has this mentality with his own self worth, but because it was programmed into him at such a young age, it isn't something he can easily brush aside.
To him, having someone be admired more than him, to be 'better' than him for even a second basically diminished his value as a person and makes him less deserving. That and he still feels as though hes the best so people should be looking at him (bro has a HUGE ego). A lot of his anger issues have roots in insecurity , especially this one, and i think it's why for a comedy show there is something so....almost tragic about Shawn despite all the jokes and references he makes.
Aw no problemo man! 💜 that makes two or us obsessed with psych and discussing shawn spencer smh. He's just a little mentally ill guy ,and he's just so interesting to look at because he copes so differently with struggles compared to what is typical , or what you see typically in shows. Tysm for the replys too 💜 I adore interacting with people (^∇^)

I was literally thinking about this the other day because that episode is one of my favourites! Henry deffo knows it's socially unacceptable to do that, but he doesn't care because he values basically using shawn as his perfect model cop , over what is considering okay and right . He views his methods as more useful and helpful, tho is aware that others most certainly do not agree and for good reason too. He's literally just using him constantly for his own selfishness most the time . At least in shawns younger years. He does care abt him, but it is pretty warped with his own self intrest . Still like him , espically in later years more than his mum tho. I have an array of issues with that woman
The thing that gets me the most though when it comes to Henry locking Shawn in his trunk was that he knew that it was wrong. Because when the lady walking her dog went past and gave Henry a look, he awkwardly assured her that he had his keys— so he knew that it was a messed up thing to do to your eleven year old son BUT HE DID IT ANYWAYS!!
And I know that it was for “self defense/worst case scenarios” or whatever, and, yes, it did end up helping like, twenty years later, but there’s better ways to teach someone to escape a trunk. You can just explain using words, you don’t need to do a trial run.
And if you can’t tell, I really don’t like Henry sometimes lmao.
ALRIGHT I HAVE TEA WITH SHAWNS MUM.
I always see ppl talk about Henry, but NO ONE ever mentions or talks about Madeleine being kinda shitty too.
Every time i see that woman i either feel indifferent to her, or pure rage. Some things she does just annoy me and feel so rude and crule on shawn.
For example, leaving Henry to look after shawn for one, and two literally telling him to his face about a topic he's very sensitive about "lol i felt a million times better once i moved away", while not saying anything and letting the wedge between him and his father grow.
Look idm if she moves out, i think thats fine and actually really healthy considering they should have broke of their marriage some time ago, plus shawn is an adult now or getting to one, but that woman didn't ever seem to help at all and only checked in every 3 years, which explains why shawn didn't understand it was actually her that willingly moved away.
Also, there was an episode she was LITERALLLY in town, and she didn't even call shawn to say she was around and you can see it upsets him bc he only sees her every couple of years. Like, i get that maybe Henry should have told him, but shawn doesn't live at home anymore. He's an adult she should know he's too the point now that she should be telling him directly.
Maybe i might be a bit more forgiving if she was actually there for shawn when he was a kid , but you hardly if ever hear about her in his childhood flashbacks. It's mostly only and all henry taking him around everywhere and looking after him. It's obvious it's only henry looking after him well too bc if her mum was there more she would have most certainly flattened out things so Henry was a bit less...mmm henry ig? If she really cared so dearly, and she really was home, that doesn't make it any better cuz she just let henry get away with his very questionable 'life lessons'. Idk if i'd say shes as bad as henry was, but she is deffo a lot more problematic than ppl ever mention.
Also making the argument, she moved out due to the horrid nature towards her son and her from henry, also doesn't make any sense bc she literally just leaves him there with henry. doesn't offer for him to go with her, doesn't explain she is the one chosing to leave and break things off. nothing.
the only gripe i have with the psych fandom is that a lot of y’all act like henry spencer is the devil. yes, he was weirdly obsessive about raising shawn to be a detective, and this led to some questionable-at-best parenting moments. but the man is not EVIL.
it has always been clear how much he loves shawn, and he seems to have been very present in his life as a kid. he did his best to raise shawn, mostly by *himself, and set him up for a stable future. he didn’t always go about that the best way, but he had good intentions and he loves his kid. and when shawn is an adult, henry really goes out of his way to help him with psych cases, even though this wasn’t the future henry had envisioned for him.
henry isn’t perfect, but would you really want him to be? i think that would make the show pretty boring. also, whose dad IS perfect?
*(shawn’s mom didn’t leave until he was a teenager, but from what we’ve seen it doesn’t seem like she was as present as his dad was even during his childhood. i have not completed the series, so correct me if i’m wrong on that)
