There were three things you hated most in the world—sand, the sun, and long car rides. Unfortunately for you, those three things were just what your best friend, Huening, loved the most in the world. That explained why, despite your hatred for those things, you were currently on a five-hour-long drive to a weekend beach getaway in Busan. So, while you were blasting the AC—which conveniently flickered on and off without notice because of how busted Kai’s car was—and applying SPF to ward off the rays he insisted on inviting in with the open roof, he was busy flicking through the radio with a small smile on his lips.
He spared you a cursory glance, and his smile widened into a mischievous grin. “Isn’t that your third time this hour?”
“And?” You rolled your eyes and adjusted the rearview mirror so you could rub the cream into your cheeks properly. “At least, I won’t be the one with sunburnt skin and cancerous skin cells.”
“It’s sunkissed, _____, and it’s not that deep.”
“Like the cancer’s origin, Hyuka.” He gave you a certain look, and you rolled your eyes again. “Don’t give me that look, you know I’m right.”
His grin grew, as he turned up the radio. “What was that? I can’t hear you.”
“You’re so immature. I can’t believe they actually gave you your license.”
“_____, you’ve really got to speak up!” Huening yelled over the music, grinning widely and gesturing to his ear with his free hand, “I really can’t hear what you’re saying at all.”
Giving your skin one last pat, you returned the rearview mirror to its original position. You rolled your eyes yet again, huffing, “Fine, be like that. I am going to sleep.”
At least, that’s what you tried to do—by tried, you meant uncomfortably shifting in your seat and fiddling with your seatbelt to find a mildly comfortable position—until Huening cranked the music up to an ear-splitting volume. You tried to ignore the music, and his obvious attempt at annoying you, and you were almost successful until he started singing along.
Scowling, you cracked one eye open and glared at him through it. “I can’t win, can I?”
“Nope,” he said, popping the p and smirking. He switched the song to one you two knew very well and threw you a knowing look. “Sing with me, _____.”
“No.”
“Come on,” he whined, poking you when you tried to close your eyes again, “This is our song. You have to sing with me.”
You were going to answer with a firm refusal and maybe even try to fall asleep again, despite the AC deciding to sputter out right then and there. But Huening gave you pleading eyes and a subtle pout, and suddenly you were willing to hand over everything in your name if he were to ask—which wasn’t saying much, since you were an unemployed high school graduate, but it was the thought that counted.
Instead of handing over everything you owned, you settled for a low, “Fine, but don’t blame me if your ears never recover.”
He let out a loud whoop, smiling, as he increased the volume of the song. Tentatively, you started singing along, both offkey and off-pitch, but you couldn’t focus on that for long because Heuning joined in with an even pitchier tone. A laugh was itching to crawl out of your throat because you two sounded ridiculous, but you held it in to finish the song off with a bang—a high note you tried to hit but missed terribly.
At that, the two of you couldn’t hold your laughter in anymore and it started pouring out of you before you could even stop it. And, even though there wasn’t much about this trip you liked—the icky feeling of your sweaty skin, the wind blowing in your ears, and just the burning sun and all it does to you—you liked Huening, his loud laugh, and the way a smile looked on his sun kissed skin. And that was good enough for you.
