Emerald: I ... Mercury, close your eyes.

Mercury: (opens his eyes and finds himself on the streets of Vale. The sun is shining, people are walking down the street, Mercury can even smell street food) What the ...?

What’s the Delusion!Emerald au?
The Delusion!Emerald AU is an AU that spawned when I was talking on the Emercury discord server with a few buddies. The basic premise is that Emerald died, however until she died, she was using her semblance on Mercury, and the event caused Mercury’s mind to break. Mercury thinks Emerald is still living and breathing alongside him, but the ugly truth is that Emerald was killed.
Emerald is most likely the most positive connection, and from what we’ve seen in canon, Mercury does not have the best backstory. Even after he killed his abusive, alcoholic dad, Mercury is surrounded by bad authority figures (Cinder, Roman, Salem, etc.) Make no mistake, I am not excusing Mercury for his sins. A lot of people died in the Fall of Beacon and he’s still a hyper-violent sadist. I’m talking about how his story thus far can lead to him having a mental break and hallucinating Emerald by his side.
