Jrwi Jay Ferin - Tumblr Posts
Okay I have had this theory for months but I never actually laid it out before now. However it's well past time I actually do that considering episode 115 all but confirmed its truth (theres still wiggle room for me to be wrong, but honestly not much)
THE FERIN FAMILY ARE AASIMAR, AND HERES WHY:
The thing that originally made me go Hey Wait A Damn Minute was the visions of the original prophecy and its history that gillion got from that tree: "Another flash, and you see these red-haired olympian looking humans and elves and all kinds of different races that are flying with their own wings". And I heard that and thought about how much that sounds like aasimar, and then the weird dreams jay had and then captain widow insisting she has powerful blood and then star saying she sensed divinity on jay and then the whole ferin family's affinity for fire magic and everything just clicked into place.
Then in episode 114 we got the recording of Faye Ferin saying "hail the solar mother" and i was like no fucking way- BUT i set it aside because it felt like I could be reaching with that evidence. It could just be a religious phrasing, not necessarily something literal.
Then episode 115 happened and I got confirmation of my theory.
Grizzly doesn’t outright say "yes the ferin are aasimars”, but he gives us all the last few pieces of the puzzle.
Here's a link to the episode that should start where the confirmation is - the two tablets: https://youtu.be/M9ig9XCUrvU?si=oYdisYFxTqx6ogbb&t=868
Transcript of the tablets: Tablet One: Shards of the divine, these words are for you and you alone. We are descendants of the sun. Thus, we are the light - the beacon that will eradicate the dark. We are the flame to which all will yield. We are the shining justice that will always prevail. Our steps illuminate the way forward and our hands spark the tales of history. Tablet Two: Shards of the divine, these words are for you and you alone. Know your kin, recognized by the manes of flickering flame, wings that rival dragons, the golden suns in our eyes. Unity is the key to prosperity. Our elders will raise generations that burn with vigorous radiance.
NOW ON TO MY EXPLANATION!!
The thing that confirmed it outright for me is literally the line "We are descendants of the sun", because there are no ifs ands or buts about it - aasimar are descended from celestials. The aasimar entry for Monsters of the Multiverse states "Whether descended from a celestial being or infused with heavenly power, aasimar are mortals who carry a spark of the Upper Planes within their souls." the tablet Jay stole from her grandmother is written in celestial, and says they are descended from the sun(aster), ergo, descended from a celestial.
Next up is the whole "Thus we are the light - the beacon that will eradicate the dark. We are the flame to which all will yield. We are the shining justice that will always prevail." bit. The entry for Protector Aasimar (the subrace i believe Jay fits best) in Volos Guide to Monsters reads "Protector aasimar are charged by the powers of good to guard the weak, to strike at evil wherever it arises, and to stand vigilant against the darkness."
Then there's "Our steps illuminate the way forward and our hands spark the tales of history." Which then in the MotM entry it says "aasimar are mortals who carry a spark of the Upper Planes within their souls. They can fan that spark to bring light, ease wounds, and unleash the fury of the heavens."
THEN THERES THE REAL FUCKING GIVEAWAY!!! THIS LINE: "Know your kin, recognized by the manes of flickering flame, wings that rival dragons, the golden suns in our eyes."
MotM says "They resemble their parents, but … often have features that hint at their celestial heritage." and VGtM says "They are a people of otherworldly visages, with luminous features that reveal their celestial heritage."
OF THE CELESTIAL FEATURES OPTIONS OFFERED BY MOTM, ENTRY 2 IS "METALLIC, LUMINOUS, OR DARK EYES" AND ENTRY 3 IS "STARKLY COLORED HAIR". THE FERINS ARE WELL KNOWN FOR HAVING BOTH.
The tablets are, of course, not my only evidence.
the ferins arent born with The Ferin Eye as revealed by Jay having to earn hers and Drey talking about when he got his. "now icarus," i hear you say "wouldnt that mean they dont actually fit the celestial features requirement?" and to that i answer "NO! IT IN FACT FITS IT BETTER!"
In discussing aasimar celestial features, MotM says "These [features] often begin subtle and become more obvious when the aasimar gains the ability to reveal their full celestial nature." Jay didn’t have the Ferin eye until she earned it and its subsequent abilities. And we all remember how she earned it, right?
A weird ass fucking dream.
Now let’s look at that. According to VGtM “An aasimar, except for one who has turned to evil, has a link to an angelic being. That being … provides guidance to the aasimar, though this connection functions only in dreams. As such, the guidance is not a direct command or a simple spoken word. Instead, the aasimar receives visions, prophecies, and feelings.”
In Jay's first sun dream (Juice Roll With It // Episode #88), Grizzly describes the sun and says "You feel like its presence is trying to reach you. And as you notice, you feel almost like you want it to.”
And then the core of the dream itself:
Grizzly: “Do you think Jay can withstand this impossible heat of the sun as you get just barely one step closer?” Condi: “I’m gonna say no… but she would try anyways, if that is, like, what the feeling is kinda giving her, you know?” Grizzly: “This powerful presence, as hot as it is - you can’t help but think of your sister. You can’t help but think of your friends. But then, you think of your mother, and then you think of your father, and then you think of your grandmother” (makes condi roll con save with disadvantage, condi got an 11) “with an 11, you take that step forward, but this overwhelming pressure, anxiousness, fear, handcuffs your spirit, closes your mind, and you just feel the heat of the sun overcome you. And you are jolted awake back in the reality. … but you know that in this dream you lost. You lost to the heat.”
Then the second dream (Happy Wife Happy Life // Episode 102), where the sun is hotter and larger than before and excruciatingly painful:
Grizzly: “You just can’t help but stare at it with both eyes wide open. And behind you you feel another heat.” (Condi asks if Jay can see this heat or if Jay is too focused on the sun) “You know that this heat signifies that backing away and falling is not an option this time. But as you look at the sun, you once again think about your family: your mother, who said she was sick; your father, who called you naive; your grandmother, who threatens the safety of your friends. You think of your friends. So I ask again, this time: do you think Jay can withstand that heat? That pressure and that fire?” Condi: “I think as Jay is staring up at this sort of immense fireball that represents… obviously her pressure, and she feels that heat at her back… I don’t think she would look at the heat as, like, something preventing her from stepping back and falling anymore. But in this metaphorical sense - since a lot of this is a metaphor - she’d probably look at it as what she basically can’t turn her back on, what she can’t leave behind. Basically like her new hope. You know, what she wants to protect. So she’s in between this and this giant fireball. Um. And I think with that in mind she would take a step forward and, um. While maybe not fully confident in herself, she would jump into the fireball with all her might, doing her best. ... I think she can handle it. She thinks she can handle it.” Grizzly: “Fair enough. That’s all I asked. You jump in- go ahead and roll a con save with advantage.” (Condi got a 19) “You leap with almost like a raging fire of conviction even if you doubt yourself, jay. And the sun almost seems to open up to welcome you in. And at first, the searing pain of the fireball’s heat feels like it’s melting your skin. You scream until it feels like it’s melting away that doubt. And then, all of the pain subsides. There’s a calming sense that kind of overtakes, jay, in your subconscious. And it’s all white at this point - your whole vision.”
So the sun reached out to jay through a dream, as aasimar’s celestial links tend to do, and gave her a test of strength that she had to figure out for herself (“as such, the guidance is not a direct command or simple spoken word. Instead, the aasimar receives visions, prophecies, and feelings.” - VGtM). She only passed it by remembering she had people she needed to protect (“Protector aasimar are charged by the powers of good to guard the weak, to strike at evil wherever it arises, and to stand vigilant against the darkness.” - VGtM). And when she passed this test given to her in a dream: “speaking of your vision, you begin to feel a warmth behind one of your eyelids. And the next day comes as you’re the first to wake at the very crack of dawn. The sun rises, and you rise with it. And you blink a few times - you feel something different. … This time, you look into a mirror and, just like your dad, just like Drey, you see this bright orange glowing eye on one of the sides. And you feel whatever that was: you passed it.”
This, therefore, perfectly fits Jay into the aasimar’s celestial features description that “these [features] often begin subtle and become more obvious when the aasimar gains the ability to reveal their full celestial nature.” Jay had to prove herself to the goddess to earn another celestial trait.
And once more, “Icarus!” I hear you cry. “You keep saying Jay fits the Protector Aasimar subrace, but don’t Protector Aasimar have incorporeal wings that come from their celestial heritage? Jay’s wings are from a tattoo! That doesn’t work!” To which I say, “Are you sure?”
The Protector Aasimar’s subrace ability is called Radiant Soul and allows the aasimar to “unleash the divine energy within yourself, causing your eyes to glimmer and two luminous, incorporeal wings to sprout from your back.”
Jay’s wings come from enchanted tattoos with which she can cast Fly. These were a deliberate choice Jay made and are not celestial in origin. However, in the first sun dream, when Jay reaches out for the sun Grizzly says “You begin to feel the tattoo on your upper back sting.” When condi asks to clarify if it’s the Niklaus tattoo, Grizzly only says “Just the upper back.”
This, of course, leads me to believe that those dreams will or already have affected her wings in some way - perhaps leaving space for her to unlock more of her celestial heritage and power as she earns it. It’s something we’ll just have to watch and see for.
Either way the Ferins are aasimar, Jay's gonna be the first one in generations to earn their true celestial power from Aster, and i will Die On This Hill
i reread my doc for the gotg au. i just realised the original plot for the reader is so jay ferin coded
i have a problem
binged a few qsmp ao3 fics and got reminded about the hybrids. now how can i turn my old gotg au into a qsmp fic
Favorite Quote From Chip, Jay and Gillion?
a jrwi ask???? keep them coming (esp apotheosis and bitb, they're still fresh in my head)!!!!
omygosh it's actually been a while since i watched riptide (i took a break around origins and went to listen to the patreon campaigns), so i don't remember specific quotes. BUT one of the scenes that come to mind is in ep 53 Not Ferin Well
/// spoilers for ep 53 of jrwi riptide
where jay is trying to convince chip that she never cared for them, and chip is just like "yeah, sure thing" like he doesn't believe her one bit
and then when they revive gillion, he's like "just tell me what you want so i can fight for it" and jay is like "i want to keep adventuring with you guys" that shit destroyed me (my lil found family heart)
Who is winning a fist fight between Chip, Jay and Gillion?
i hope i got your question right, you mean if all three are throwing punches at each other, yeah?
first and foremost, i think gillion might lose because he wouldn't fight dirty (honour and all), but chip and jay definitely wouldn't mind fighting dirty. so even if gillion may or may not be the strongest (honestly can't remember), he's gonna get like dust kicked up into his eyes or something and go down
between chip and jay, i want to say jay initially wins the fight because of her navy training, only to get knocked to the floor because chip is a bastard and couldn't stay down HAHA
i wonder if this is really inaccurate though, because i'm only at riptide origins where jay and chip meet, and it's been a while since i've listened to riptide
feel free to add your opinions!
I constantly have it in my mind that Gillion is three years older than Chip. Gillion, yes, Gillion mother fucking Tidestrider, is the oldest of the albatrio.
It's funny on a base level, Gillion is oldest yet the others need to babysit him. Gillion is the oldest but he knows the least. Haha.
It's less funny if you think about Chip being 8 years old, happy with the black rose pirates and then Gillion. Gillion who is eleven and training to be a weapon for others.
It's less funny if you think about Jay, 12 and spending time with her mom and sister. Gillion, 13, who can't remember his mom and almost expects his sister's hugs to hurt because the only contact he gets is hit over the head for failing again.
Chip, 14, Jay, 16, able to act out and cause trouble, because they're teenagers, why not goof around? And then Gillion, who's 17 and told to be an adult and act like it. But he can't change how he acts, because being mature has always been the standard expectation, he doesn't know how to be an adult when that's already what he's been his whole life.
Chip, 18 and he is scared to kill someone because killing is bad. Jay, 20 and her sister is dead and she is heartbroken. Gill, 21 and he is already used to killing, and he never sees his sister anyways, and he ruins his life. He ruins his life doing wha he thought was right, doing what they taught him to do.
Gillion is three years older than Chip, a year older than Jay. And it seems insignificant until you think about those years being stolen from him. It took Gillion 22 years to be free. Chip was free off and on, he had a childhood, Jay was never held back, she had a childhood.
Gillion didn't.
POV: you piss off jay 🧙♂️
I keep changing their designs every time I draw them (and also my art style)
thinking about chips stupid fucking tattoo
First time I’ve ever doodled Jay :)
Thinking about when Jay inevitably fucks up. I mean, I know she already has and things, but when you think about it, she hasn't made a huge mistake, at least not in Chip and Gillion's eyes. They've said a million times that "You know best," and "I just depend on Jay, she's kind of the smart one." They view her as responsible, and though they don't intend to make her feel pressure, she most likely does. So when something happens and there's no denying it's Jays fault, then what? She's not going to be able to forgive herself, with everything depending on her. She's the sensible one, who knows what to do, and if she messes that up, than what is she worth to her crew and co-captain?
i recently finished the ep where jay has a call with grandma ferin, and i've had thoughts ever since (spoilers ahead):
jay's always been the one with a little more smarts, a little more common sense out of the albatrio. she's usually the one trying to keep chip and gillion out of trouble, and more often than not, she's solo-ing the big evil boss while chip and gillion are stuck doing some bit.
chip and gillion have fondly said "jay's the smartest" and "jay's the smart one here" countless times.
she didn't feel so smart hyperventilating into the conch shell with her grandmother on the other end.
she didn't feel so smart when she froze up the moment she heard her grandma's voice, unable to form a single intelligible sentence to even remotely try to pretend she was still undercover and working for the navy.
after she had retreated to the captain's quarters, chip and gillion had come to the conclusion that they didn't really know how to help her, and that jay had probably already figured it out anyways.
but she didn't.
so much for being the smart one, huh?
and if not for aslana's sudden visit, she would have probably spiralled in her thoughts all night. she would have probably stayed up replaying the conversation over and over, each time ending the same.
because she was the smart one in all things except when it came to the ferins.
Please for the love of god DO NOT think about Jay Ferin when she first realises that she loves her fellow crew members
And how she cries herself to sleep because she knows that the second they find out that she had planned to betray them to the navy, they'll hate her
And how she remembers how Gillion reacted to Chip's lies, and how he held the blade to Chip's neck
And how she thinks about Chip watching from the side in disgust as Gillion levels blow after blow at her in his honour
And how she slowly realises she can never be honest with the people she loves most
hell hath no fury like a woman scorned
aka jay ferin is scary and protective
people overlooked the younger ferin sister. she trained and played with friends but she just was normal.
then she ran off in the middle of the night. navy soldiers knew of her plans and finally they looked at her with pride. her father finally talked about her.
then she turned away. ran off with pirates. then those same navy soldiers learnt to pay attention
they were surrounded. their team facing a crew of pirates one being the quiet ferin girl. they saw her, finally.
the navy training had paid off but when facing them it seemed like the biggest mistake. mechanical wings spread out behind her, an angel of vengeance, her very presence blocking out the sun.
she held a pistol in her hand, no longer her fathers child but a different ferin.
she was a menace, but once she saw her crewmate fall she was terrifying. she shot with grace and speed, barely blinking as their comrades fell, blood pooled on the floor but she never, not once faltered.
when her bullets ran out, she wielded a sword. their men screamed before one by one it fell silent. her fury filed the room until she could help her friend. only one survived, left as a warning.
Doing some art studies because I feel like I'm forgetting how to draw
Shoutout my girl Jay Ferin for help
how do u charaterize jay? i rlly enjoyed ur stories and wonder what u keep in mind when writing her shes a lot subtler than the boys who are really up front abt their wants and insecures i feel like sometimes im not even sure what she WANTS so id be helpful if u ever respond hope ur day is day and that tomorrow is better regardless
jay is a logical and intelligent character, who’s also observant and assertive. BUT,,, she’s also capable of being as clueless and as fucking dumb as chip and gill—trust me on that, NOT SUBTLE AT ALL. when she gets scared, she might freeze, and her nervousness often leads to some serious SERIOUS fumbling. she makes reckless decisions, especially under pressure,,, she's blunt both in her opinions and remarks and so she can come off as harsh. despite her bluntness, she genuinely cares about people and will take the time to understand and support them. she definitely has a snarky, sarcastic edge and she’s easily tickled by the silliest fucking things—laughter is contagious for her. when she’s excited, she talks fast and might stutter... man, I could talk about jay all day fucking long-
about her insecurities, i think they are deeply tied to her sense of identity and her place in the world. as a ferin, she is very aware where her place is and where it should be. she’s aware of the expectations and the high standards she’s supposed to meet, which make her feel like she’s always falling short. although she’s relieved to have stepped away from her family and gained a broader perspective of how fucked up they are, she sometimes misses them, she can't help it. this struggle with feeling inadequate also affects her role as a captain. mistakes and hesitation trigger self-doubt, making her question herself again and again whether she’s truly up to the task.
I think at her core, jay longs for freedom, for her own path without the constraints of her family’s expectations. she wants to be accepted, valued, and recognized for who she really is. she's driven by a strong desire to prove herself, she wants to feel competent and capable. she want to overcome those self-doubts, find security in her worth, and strike a balance between her need for independence and her longing for validation...
All I’ve got in me today is a messy comic lol!
Anyway, I think Jayson definitely pitted Ava and Jay against each other as kids, and I definitely think Jay is weak little runt of the family. She doesn’t do well in hand to hand and Ava excels at it. It’s why she picks up archery later and works with her mom at the beginning of the series.
(Btw I am only on episode 87 rn! Please no spoilers!)
just roll what if where jay ferin gets zapped into wonderlust in blink's place. within five minutes of being there she's shot troy in the face, he's fully dead. within an hour, she's fucked aeon. within a day, her and runt at best friends and invent a teleporter powerful enough to transcend realms. she's home by hour 27 with promises to return regularly
JAY (with gun)

I am very happy with this and I managed to get a lot of detail into it as well :D
Did you know that your eye rotates when you turn your head? I was looking in the mirror recently and noticed it, that's why the crosshair thing I do in her eye is upright
short haired jay ferin *standing ovation*
