So I had an epiphany today that Kaname and Kaien would make such a fascinating closet romance . Kaname getting his aggression out by shoving Kaien against a wall and having serious make out sessions . And it hit me , what is thier ship name ? I went to A03 and searched Kaien Cross/Kaname Kuran , I ended up with 300 fics about everyone else where Kaname and Kaien are tagged individually as side characters . I’m exhausted , has nobody written on these two???
Hi there ! To answer you, this is the first time I’ve heard about a KanamexKaien pairing! Didn’t see any fanfics about that pairing on FF.net (still useful as an old database for fanfics) or deviantart. I’m afraid you are the first to search for fanfics for this couple. Just to be sure, I would recommend you ask @wabatai ! I don’t know them personally, but I know that their favorite character is Kaien Cross. They ship Kaisaya mainly, but they might know if there are fanfics that feature your rare pair. Anyway, thanks for coming here, for the likes and for the ask ! :)
Yes, I know that, but when he was reincarnated, he tried to build a peaceful life for his descendant and now “sister”, Yuuki, except that he didn’t know anything about how the world functioned anymore, as he has slept for so long. Some things stayed the same, like the adoration towards Pureblood, but the importance of the Senate and the reluctant accords with the Guild were too, for example, as it happened 3000 years ago, when he was asleep. And Juuri and Haruka died soon after that. Even if he’s older spiritually, he could have seeked advice from Kaien, who he knew was trying to bring to life a co-existence project, but was more “up-to-date” with the society and the general mindset of everyone, being at the same time old enough and young enough (250 y/o at least) to understand how recent views on Hunters or Levels D and E were developped, for instance. Otherwise, why would he have left Yuuki under Kaien’s care, if he didn’t trust him to be a man deserving of respect, and with qualities befitting of a father, such as being a good advice-giver ? I hope I have explained myself clearly enough, and it’s alright if you don’t see their relationship the same way I do, I find your take on this pair quite interesting, I respect it and I agree that their situation, as characters with exceptional backgrounds, is very similar :)

Vampire Knight Zero Kiryu V.S Kaname Kuran
Okay, so, I have a bit to say about this. 1) I have to say, I see the love between Ai and Ren, but it is a very platonic and sister-like love. I can maybe imagine Ai having slightly romantic feelings for Ren, but I also can’t because she waited so long for a sibling. Not a lover. 2) I do have to agree that Hino is bringing back the triangle, or at least aspects of the triangle. Like, Ren surpressed her thirst for Ai for years, the way Zero did. Ai tried to be this perfect big sister to Ren, the way Kaname was the “perfect big brother” to Yuki. 3) Can you really call it a triangle though when there isn’t a third person? Zero doesn’t count, Seiya doesn’t either....we don’t really see any other male character close to Ren or Ai at that point in time. 4) Even if it is lazy writing, I’m kind of interested to see how Hino will write about how Ren and Ai handle the opposition to their relationship. We didn’t get too much of that with Zeki, it was mostly just implied. That vampire grandma from the last chapter mostly had a bone to pick about what she considers to be a “golden age” for vampires and Ren. Hopefully the opposition is written better for Renai.
It’s not even the lesbian aspect of it or the blatant incest between a pureblood and non-pureblood that bothers me its
The fucking
Love triangle
All over
Compounded into the children produced by said love triangle like
Hino really spent 90 chapters having yuuki go back back back and forth between Kaname and zero only to have her be impregnated by both
And then those children
Ai = half Kaname, half Yuuki
Ren = half Zero, half Yuuki
Ai + Ren = Kaname, Yuuki and Zero
They end up
Hooking up
Bringin the love triangle back full circle again i mean COME ON ITS SUCH LAZY WRITING
I agree with a majority of this as Hino never really properly explains some crucial world building elements, but I’ve got some food for thought about some of this.
Purebloods being able to turn other Purebloods human. I actually recently came across the same revelation that anon did and that the methods used between Juri and Yuki are different. Juri specifically says that she’s putting a spell on Yuki that will “lock away her vampire traits and memories.” She starts bleeding from the forehead which branches out from beneath her and Yuki, before she pretty much explodes. With Yuki, she merely says that she’s able to turn Kaname into a human by giving him her heart. What’s interesting is that she lightly touches her chest right over her heart, before cupping Kaname’s face with that same hand (I don’t currently have my copy of the books on me so I can’t provide pictures but I absolutely will when I get the chance). Her eyes start to close, and Kaname’s eyes open to a ruined Cross Academy. Also worth noting is that when Yuki first tries to turn Kaname human after they sleep together, she places her palm so that it covers his entire face. Same with Isaya when he attempts to turn Yuki human. I think even Juri had a hold of child Yuki’s head, but that might be because she was hugging Yuki in her last moments. Correct me if I’m wrong, but we are never told how Isaya’s wife turned their child human; just that she did, and the child grew old and died. Perhaps Kaname was so sure that the spell on Yuki would one day break because he knew it wasn’t done properly I.e. Purebloods have to give each other their hearts, not just place a spell on them. Though Yuki does seem to have an affinity with memory magic; maybe she was showing signs of this at an early age, and Kaname was merely guessing that she would be able to lift the spell?
Canonically, Yuki and Juri are the only Purebloods (that we know of) to have ever been able to wield Hunter weapons without ill effects. Kaname, every time we see him grab a Hunter weapon (the sword, Artemis, and Bloody Rose) has always been shown with lightening crackling around his hands. So I think, technically, any vampire could wield a Hunter weapon; they would have to muscle through the pain it would cause which is why no other vampire ever tries it’s just too much work lol. Artemis seemingly rejecting Yuki after she was awakened as a vampire may have been it needing time to get used to a vampire once again handling it. Then again, Kaname in the last chapter states his “consciousness will live on as countless weapons,” so I imagine that it’s more of like a Thor’s hammer situation. The Hunter weapons have some degree of sentience (this is hinted at when Kaname states that Bloody Rose should recognize his blood and voice and is proven right when it frees him from its thorns. Interestingly, this is only after he states that he has someone he wants to protect. More on that in a moment). Artemis could sense the conflict and confusion in Yuki and deemed her unworthy, which is why there’s lightening crackling around her hands when she grabs it. It’s only after Yuki states that she will not just leave the Academy with Kaname, but instead stay and fight Rido that Artemis accepts her. Because in that moment, she did not abandon her beliefs and values from when she was human (despite Kaname encouraging her to) and instead chose to fight to protect the people she cares about. Just like the Hooded Woman chose to fight for the humans she loved so much that she sacrificed her heart for them for the next ten thousand years.
I’m pretty sure Kaname stated that marrying within the family was something most Purebloods did? Not just the Kurans? And I always thought that the main reason why Haruka and Juri betrothed Yuki to Kaname was because they didn’t want to risk introducing Yuki to vampire society just yet, which they would have had to do if they wanted her to be engaged with someone else. As for the Kurans being able to wield a Hunter weapon because the Hooded Woman’s blood flows through them: I think it’s a fantastic idea, and does line up with why Hunter’s are still around and able to use those weapons after thousands of years. But going back to my thought that the weapons have some level of sentience, I thought that perhaps Artemis (since that seems to be the weapon that was passed down through the family) recognized something of the Kaname the Hooded Woman knew in his descendants. Especially since, again, Juri and Yuki are the only ones we know of that can use Artemis, and both of them wanted peaceful coexistence with the humans. Just like Kaname and the Hooded Woman. But Kaname became more like the arrogant Purebloods that he fought against after he decided to free Shizuka and turn Zero into a vampire. The Hooded Woman herself states that there is no need to turn a human into a vampire and keep them as slaves and is visibly upset by this. While Kaname may not call Zero his slave or servant, he does refer to him constantly as a weapon, which isn’t that much better. So the weapons rejecting Kaname would be like the Hooded Woman saying to him, “You’re no longer the man I once knew. I don’t recognize you anymore.” Let me know your thoughts, I would actually really like to talk about this more.
(VK Science) I think there’s also an inconsistency with turning people into vampires. The Hooded Woman supposedly gave her blood to humans, which turned them into the first vampire hunters. Honestly, I don’t understand why that would be necessary when her heart created anti-vampire weapons, which humans should be able to touch/use hence the name. Anyway, this contradicts the first arc of the story when Rido gives Ichiru a vial of his blood to turn Yuuki back into a pureblood.
Back to the first hunters, I would think that drinking the Hooded Woman’s blood would turn them into Level D’s since in Sara’s arc it appears that drinking a Pureblood’s blood turns people into servants. Also, I don’t even see how drinking her blood would enable them to inherit her genes… But then there’s the whole “magic” of Purebloods turning other vampires into humans, which doesn’t seem to be the same process between Yuuki and her mom, so I honestly don’t know what Hino is going with here :/
I love this ask; it’s a great opportunity to broach a theory I’ve always had in the back of my mind since the ancestor history was revealed. =P~~~
Okay, so to start with the first part of your ask–this is what I can glean from the lore we have:
A vampire’s blood can heal illness if fed to a human (dosage unknown). We know this from Shizuka and Ichiru. Shizuka never bit Ichiru, but she gave him blood. Feeding blood supposedly doesn’t turn humans into vampires, but it can potentially be lethal to them.
To “turn” a human into a vampire (or a former Pureblood back into a vampire a la Yuuki), all that needs to be done is for the Master Pureblood to bite the human (or former Pureblood). If the newly turned vampire does not drink their master’s blood, they will descend to Level E at some point.
To “complete” a Level D vampire and ensure they don’t descend to Level E, the Level D must drink their master’s blood. (See the crisis over Zero when Shizuka was killed before he could drink her.)
As for Sara, I’m fairly certain she bit her girls first. She “got permission” (*snort*) and then turned them and fed them her blood to “complete” them.
Juri and Yuuki/ Isaya and his wife/Yuuki and Kaname are all part of the pureblood!sacrifice!magicz! that seems to have no scientific basis whatsoever. XD (Also like…why was Juri’s spell doomed to fail, and why did Kaname magically know that when Yuuki was still a kid? Nobody knows ‘cause Hino never said! So many loose ends!)
The issue with Yuuki and Rido was that Rido was going to give her his blood and reactivate her memories without actually turning her, I do believe. Basically he was going to do to her what the Hooded Woman’s blood did to some of the hunters–give her a huge dosage and see if she dies/goes mad. Since he wasn’t going to bite her, it wouldn’t turn her back into a vampire to help her cope. I think this is what the ultimate goal probably was (however, I admit that Hino probably was just pulling crap out of her rear during the Rido section and that this is probably an inconsistency). Kaname spares her from this, because he bites her (turns her) and gives her his blood (completes her and spares her from madness).
There’s also the bizarre case of Rido being Kaname’s master despite…only feeding Kaname his blood and baby Kaname’s blood. Yet somehow Rido is Kaname’s master, so I’m assuming? allowing someone to drink your blood makes them your master as well? (Lol inconsistencies again.) This would retcon Shizuka and Ichiru though, because the very reason Shizuka wouldn’t turn Ichiru was because she didn’t want to be his master… *sigh* You’re right, this story’s science (and honestly lore in general) is just bunk. ;D
Okay now that all that’s out of the way, the Hooded Woman’s case is a interesting. I reread the official translations, and it appears the humans on their own weren’t strong enough to wield the weapons for “reasons” (I’ll get to my speculation on those in a minute). The stated reason in the story for the offering of blood was to strengthen them to wield the weapons. She gives them her blood, and a portion of them die ‘cause the blood is probably toxic to them (her dosage was probably much higher than what Shizuka gave Ichiru). The ones who survive probably have some kind of gene switched on or tampered with or mutated or altered to allow them to pass on the ability to wield the weapons genetically. (This is where we devolve into Hino’s ridiculous pseudo-magic!science for “reasons”!) Oddly, the hunters aren’t the only ones who can wield the weapons–Kaname can too, but no other Purebloods can.
My ancient theory for why the hunters need the Hooded Woman’s blood (and why Kaname and his lineage can also wield the weapons) is that the weapons can only be wielded by her because they’re extensions of her body. Therefore only those who have her blood in them can wield them.
This would explain why the Kurans a.) become so powerful as a family and b.) begin the incest tradition–they would want to keep the ability to wield the weapons “in the family” so to speak, because if ALL the Purebloods could wield the weapons, there’d be no darn point to creating them. =P
There are two problems with this theory though:
Rido was betrothed to Shizuka, and he also had a child with Shiki’s mother. If Kurans weren’t supposed to marry/have offspring outside the family in order not to spread the genes around, Rido/Haru/Juri’s parents royally screwed up.
The sword Kaname wields in arc 2 rejects him but still allows him to wield it? Yuuki’s scythe also initially rejects her until it accepts her? Why do they do this? Nobody knows… It is a mystery.
Don’t know where I’m going with this, but…there are so many inconsistencies! XD What sucks the most is that Hino just brings all this information up randomly in passing and then…never fully explains/addresses it. I wonder if she even has a notebook of worldbuilding to reference. *sigh*
