One of the highlights of Kaokoland in the far northern reaches of Namibia, Epupa is a magical belt of makalani palm forest on the perennial Kunene River. There’s something special about this Kaokoland refuge 180km north of Opuwo, where the Kunene River plunges into the gorge below. Baobab trees cling to the rocky slopes as torrents of water rumble and tumble down the rocks with a flash of rainbow and an invigorating burst of wonder.
Take the golden opportunity to visit the Himba, one of the last semi-nomadic groups in Africa; get your courage in check for a guided walk in search of the Kunene crocs or a rafting trip on the river (seasonal); and follow trails downstream keeping eyes open for our avian friends who favour this riverine habitat. And at sunset join the sundowner drive to a hill overlooking Epupa Falls for that time of day when everything pauses for beauty and celebration.
Epupa ist eines der Highlights im Kaokoland im äußersten Norden Namibias und ein magischer Gürtel aus Makalani-Palmenwäldern am Fluss Kunene. Diese Refugium, 180 km nördlich von Opuwo, wo der Kunene in die darunter liegende Schlucht fällt, hat etwas ganz Besonderes. Affenbrotbäume klammern sich an die felsigen Hänge, während Wasserströme unter einem Regenbogen über die Felsen rumpeln und hinunterstürzen.
Nutzen Sie die einmalige Gelegenheit, um die Himba zu besuchen, eine der letzten halbnomadischen Stämme in Afrika. Khowarib Lodge is located in Kaokoland, the remote north-west of Namibia. The 450 000-ha Palmwag Conservancy supports the largest free-roaming population of desert-adapted black rhino in Africa. The intriguing enigmatic Himbas are the last truly semi-nomadic tribe in Africa. They move their herds of cattle and goats vast distances over the sparse terrain to locate the necessary grazing for the animals. Unlike the painted rock art elsewhere in Southern Africa, stone was both the medium and the method for the ancient San artists in Damaraland. There are more than 2000 rock engravings in the area and there is archaeological evidence of human habitation here for at least the past 6000 years. The most impressive rock art is a mere 20 km to the west of the lodge.

Kaokoland was an administrative unit and a bantustate in northern South West Africa (now Namibia). Established during the apartheid era, it was intended to be a self-governing homeland of the OvaHimba, but an actual government was never established. Like other homelands in South West Africa, the Kaokoland was abolished in May 1989, at the beginning of the transition of Namibia towards independence.
The area is one of the wildest and least populated areas in Namibia, with a population density of one person every 2 km² (1/4 of the national average). The most represented ethnic group is the Himba people, who account for about 5,000 of the overall 16,000 inhabitants of Kaokoland. The main settlement in Kaokoland is the town of Opuwo.

Es wurde während der Apartheid-Ära gegründet und sollte ein selbstverwaltetes Homeland der OvaHimba sein, aber eine tatsächliche Regierung wurde nie gebildet. Wie andere Homelands in Südwestafrika wurde das Kaokoland im Mai 1989 abgeschafft, zu Beginn in die Unabhängigkeit Namibias.

Hoanib Valley Camp is in the Sesfontein Community Conservancy Area, Kaokoland, in the very remote northwest of Namibia. The camp sits on the bank of the Obias River, overlooking the Hoanib River Valley, a linear oasis running through one of the most beautiful deserts in Africa, where desert-adapted elephant, giraffe, lion and rhino move freely. Hoanib Valley Camp is open all year round. In the dry winter months of April to September, the desert is in its iconic state, whilst from November to March the area is carpeted in a lush, green blanket.

Das Hoanib Valley Camp liegt im Sesfontein Community Conservancy Area, Kaokoland, im sehr abgelegenen Nordwesten Namibias. Das Camp liegt am Ufer des Obias River mit Blick auf das Hoanib River Valley, eine lineare Oase, die durch eine der schönsten Wüsten Afrikas verläuft, wo sich an die Wüste angepasste Elefanten, Giraffen, Löwen und Nashörner frei bewegen. Das Hoanib Valley Camp ist ganzjährig geöffnet. In den trockenen Wintermonaten von April bis September ist die Wüste in ihrem ikonischen Zustand, während die Gegend von November bis März in eine üppige, grüne Decke gehüllt ist.
