Ooo, NIR sounds cool, and much more applicable to meat quality than my theory. And it’s not like infrared or ultraviolet are far off from our visual spectrum in the grand scheme of things, so way more physiologically plausible than eyeball X-rays.
My thought was that maybe his “xray vision” in general works more like exceptionally powerful and tunable ultrasound (imma abbr to u-s), which can def differentiate between tissue planes in muscle as well as tendons. X-rays just always seemed like such a stretch of a power when there are tons of animals that basically do have “u-s vision” and use it all the time. Orcas and shark liver, anyone? Idk if it’s cannon that he’s able to make and interpret really high frequency sound, but yo, no living creature generates ionizing radiation ☢️. It’s actively bad for you!
I imagine that X-rays was how he described it as a kid when he didn’t really know u-s was a thing, but most kids know that X-rays are used to look at your insides? And then he never bothered to correct ppl later in life. Bc as much as I like portable-CT-Clark, u-s would be way better for the general populace than getting a full body CT at random when some guy looks at you. Esp if it’s little kid Clark who was just really curious about so-and-so’s pregnancy and didn’t know you’re not supposed to expose a fetus to the equivalent of multiple CTs everyday for weeks. 😬
For anyone curious about how the images look:
Xray:

Really not useful unless you’re looking for bone problems or air where there is/isn't supposed to be air.
CT (ie really dense X-rays, and this is with the benefit of having injected contrast into the joint space, otherwise it would not look this good):

You can see better, and you can see big muscle groups, but depending on how it’s done and what you’re looking at it can be difficult to assess soft tissue for non-catastrophic problems. Faster and cheaper than MRI though.
MRI:

Gold std for soft tissue including tendons and all that jazz, look at all that differentiation in grayscale! And no ionizing radiation! But can wreck some implanted devices (insert nuance here).
U-S:

Now this may look really confusing, and it’s a really weird perspective compared to the other modalities, but the cool thing is you can see the whole patellar tendon and if you’re good at scanning you can assess for a tear at bedside while talking to someone who is shifting around a bit bc no sits still 😆. We’re limited by how well computers can process the returned sound waves bouncing off of stuff, but ultrasound tech has come a long way!

You think superman could get like a really good joint of beef.
Like just look into it and see which one has the least grim bits.
I wish I could at least
@butcherlarry is this you????
The dumbest things make me feel like I'm an adult... And then I remember I am an adult...
(like I actually use up pens now?? Mainly cause I use one until it's gone and don't just use random ones like I did when I was a kid, but still. As a kid I seriously was starting to think pens never run out of ink... Now I have to keep buying refills 🥲)
