Made some yarn for the first time!

Technically, I have made it before somewhat. What I had made didn’t use a spindle but was twisted by hand and NOT tight plus would unravel

So, having a drop spindle now, I’ve made two little balls of yarn!

The purple and yellow one was made using just roving

The dark purple one is made of several old hand spun ones i combined by using the drop spindle, as they were loose

Both have been plyed, so are ready to be used as far as I’m aware!

I Knitted A Slouchy Beanie This Week! Very Warm And Cozy ^^ I Havent Blocked It Yet (Im Not Even Sure

I knitted a slouchy beanie this week! Very warm and cozy ^^ I haven’t blocked it yet (I’m not even sure if I have a yoga mat or anything to block it on—any ideas for substitutes?) but I’m still proud of myself.

I used Sheep & Stitch’s pattern (https://sheepandstitch.com/pattern/how-to-knit-a-slouchy-hat-pattern/) and it worked out really nicely. I love the look of the textured rib, and even tho I have dark hair the blue is still lovely! I’m excited to move on to my next project haha.

HOLY SHIT as a knitter who is also a historian i NEED to get my hands on one of these

Who wants to hear about my new obsession? Great. Textile people, knitting folks, fiber peeps, history of those things lovers, and archives/special collections comrades, this is for us.

So a few weeks ago, in the midst of A Big Sad, I set out on the simple distracting mission of giving my mom the link to something I want for Christmas. Long story short, I failed. I fell down a deep rabbit hole on traditional Estonian knitting and ended up ordering a book on the subject from Estonia for myself. Anyway, it arrived and holy shit.

Who Wants To Hear About My New Obsession? Great. Textile People, Knitting Folks, Fiber Peeps, History

300 pages of fiber/knitting/history nerdiness. The first hundred cover Estonian knitting history, including archaeological finds (bog body knitwear!), regional traditions, dyes and colors, museum collections and patterns reconstructed from them!

As an archivist, I lost it when I saw this, a helpful guide to searching Estonian museum collections for English speakers. Vocabulary for knitwear collections! Navigating the search features! MIND BLOWN. In the history intro section, they recommend books on knitting history with the website link to libraries with free digital copies. They are pulling me farther into the rabbit hole and I am here for it.

And because I am a knitter and an archivist, they included a basic guide on preservation and care of vintage knitwear. I am crying rn

Who Wants To Hear About My New Obsession? Great. Textile People, Knitting Folks, Fiber Peeps, History

Ok, history is cool and all but what about the knitting??? It is amazing. This volume is not complete patterns but more of a stitch/pattern encyclopedia that can be added to other projects. It includes tips on color palate while providing reference to various traditional plates of different regions of Estonia

So these are suggested stranded colorwork patterns for mittens. But use them wherever

Stranded colorwork, intarsia in the round, lace, cables, interlay, enterlac, fringes, brioche, boarders/edging, several cast-ons I had never seen

The second volume (hard to find) is all on socks/stockings, and volume 3 (which has just been released in English) is all about mittens and I might have ordered it this morning.

It is not the easiest book to track down, nor the cheapest. As I said, I ordered it from Estonia. Amazon and Amazon owned Abe Books both had it for around $70. I, personally, refuse to give bezos money and, in this case if you are considering buying it, I encourage you to order it from this shop in Estonia. Even with international shipping, taxes, fees, and such, it was actually about $10 cheaper.

doing a pattern you don't actually trust a lot because you can't picture how it'll come together under any sane circumstance when it tells you to carry out another insane instruction is so nerve wracking. It holds the suspense of a thriller in every stitch. And then when you see it all starting to make sense you're like "you buffoon. you fool. you doubted the Pattern"

"Hwaet!" Socks Designed By Gryphon Corpus. From The Designer's Description: "Hwaet! Listen! Thus Begins

"Hwaet!" socks designed by Gryphon Corpus. From the designer's description: "Hwaet! Listen! Thus begins the immortal tale of the hero Beowulf, the bard summoning the attention of his audience. And so begin these socks, which give the text of the first page of the surviving manuscript, a copy dating to around 1000 CE. The writing flows from one sock to the other, so that you may read it uninterrupted."

The pattern can be purchased here on Ravelry.

I have had this beautiful pattern from Jesse Maed Designs waiting in my library for way too long! I love the design and wearing tanks like this and I've had a hankering to knit a garment for months. Something quick though! It's been a good bit since I've knitted anything. ... and I finally got this on my needles today! Yippee!

no pics to share sadly, but the mock neck tank I'm knitting is coming right along! my row gauge (the height of my stitches) is quite a bit shorter than the pattern gauge, though

I'm trying to do some improv mods to the pattern to ensure a good fit in spite of this, but I haven't really done any... math... just going on vibes. We'll see how badly that comes back to bite me hehe.
