Hey everyone!

Three weeks ago I had an incident at work and was off due to injuries for two weeks. I am being compensated to some degree for the time off but it will be later than when I would usually be paid and it's not the full amount I would make. I was hoping to sell some of my knit products I currently have made (this blog was meant to promote an etsy shop, but I've still been building inventory before actually opening.)

All shipping to US and Canada will be a flat 5$CAD rate and if you live somewhere else and want to buy something, message me and I can estimate shipping costs! I can accept PayPal and e-transfer (if you're in Canada).

Prices (and availability) are as follows:

Cowls: (50$CAD+5$CAD Shipping)

Trans: 1

Lesbian: 1

Bi: 1

Slouchy Hats: (35$CAD+5$CAD Shipping)

So the other night during D&D, I had the sudden thoughts that:

1) Binary files are 1s and 0s

2) Knitting has knit stitches and purl stitches

You could represent binary data in knitting, as a pattern of knits and purlsā€¦

You can knit Doom.

However, after crunching some more numbers:

The compressed Doom installer binary is 2.93 MB. Assuming you are using sock weight yarn, with 7 stitches per inch, results in knitted doom beingā€¦

3322 square feet

Factoring it outā€¦302 people, each knitting a relatively reasonable 11 square feet, could knit Doom.

3-needle bind off

I received a lot of comments on my post showing how I crochet the sleeves onto a cardigan.

Apparently, opinions are divided on whether sewing or crocheting is better.

Hereā€™s another way of joining knitted pieces: the 3-needle bind off. I like to use this for shoulders, where I want a sturdy join, since the shoulder seam in essence holds up the whole garment.

What is your preferred way of joining knitted pieces?

German short rows

My favourite kind of short rows, because they are the easiest, require the least movement and are the same no matter which side you are on or whether you are knitting or purling.

After you turn, you make a double stitch, which is subsequently treated as a simple stitch.

To make the double stitch, slip the ā€œpivotā€ stitch purlwise without bringing the yarn in front. This is the equivalent of a purlwise slipped stitch and a yarn over. In practice it is done in one movement and the result looks like a double stitch. Make sure to pull the yarn to get a tight pivot stitch.

I recently joined a knitting/crochet/craft club where its really just everyone doing their own projects while gossiping - and it is just filled with little old ladies and they love me and have decided to adopt me

today one lady had the realization that i am young and (as they put it) cute and very very single

so now she is trying to set me up with her grandson which is really really funny cause while i am gay, none of them realize that i am in fact a man and not just a masculine woman and i dont have the heart to tell them im not a girl šŸ˜…

i love my many new grandmas and theyre just so so funny

i need the help of crocheters everywhere!!!

im making a shawl for my best friend and i found a lovely pattern for it. the thing is, i only got about half way through when i lost the pattern!!!

and let me tell ya its like this thing dropped of the face of the earth.

i found it the first time by scouring google for like an hour and it was just perfect. there was a yourube tutorial for it and im nearly positive that the title was something like

ā€˜beginner crochet shawl tutorialā€™

but i swear im going insane cause ive been searching for weeks for this thing. it was a simple pattern that was a mix of double crochets and singles with some front and back post stitches in there.

it was a triangle shawl but im 100% certain it was not a granny square style one and it didnt have big gaps in it either, its meant to be warm, so i dont believe there were really any treble crochets in there either. and it was not a one or two row repeat situation either. there was like 5-7 row repeats to give it cool texture.

i remember there was apart of the video that paused on the rows to repeat as well and it was like a written part on the screen.

even if this pattern was completely deleted off the internet, i would like to know so i can at least frog and start over with a different pattern, cause its driving me insane. i just need to know

please help me find this pattern!!!

Sweater vest attempt number two is going well

I'll preface this update by saying that this is only the second sweater vest I've made.

in progress photo of my Eat The Rich sweater vest

So yeah, there's some wonky tension and I slightly fucked up the arm holes, but... Pretty pleased with it.

People have asked about a pattern and I uh. Didn't think I'd ever share my shitty graph paper scribble that I copied from a junk mail envelope but here we go. THERE ARE MISTAKES that I was too lazy to correct and just fixed as I worked, including the numbering.

I'll Preface This Update By Saying That This Is Only The Second Sweater Vest I've Made.

Next step: bind off the shoulders and then I have the joy of the ribbing for the neck and arm holes.

Working in the yarn shop on Sundays, I have a group of regulars who come in specifically then for my advice on their knitting projects and over the years I've gotten to know a lot about them - their ailments and their spouses and their children and their careers and their mothers are all things they find themselves telling me about over the course of trying to bring forth a knitted piece. Most of them are women, most of them are over 50, and most of them have been through a lot and are trying to reclaim something for themselves through the act of creation. A while back, one of these older women opened up to me about how when she first came to this country it was just her and her daughter and they were so happy until her husband joined them, when he promptly began making her miserable. Now, decades later, all her children live far away, she spends all her time taking the husband to dialysis, her sciatic is bad and she may need heart surgery (who will take care of her, I find myself wondering), and she comes to see me once a month or so to talk about a new project and tells me it is the only thing she does for herself.

Today she came in with a smile on her face and delightedly introduced me to her son, who will soon move closer to home with his family. Then she says, as if commenting on the weather, that on Friday her husband died, and tomorrow they will hold the funeral. For a second I had tonal whiplash from the conversation and then I realized, oh, you're unburdened now. Like the relief in her face and her body were palpable. The son shows a picture of a cardigan to me and asks if it can be knitted, and we pick out yarn and a pattern. She's so excited to make it for him. She beams when she looks at him; he is tall and handsome and polite, and wants to wear something she made for him. She is proud of this man she raised.

It just made me think of the many, many women who come from cultures where leaving a crappy spouse isn't an option so they shuttle along doing their best and trying to find some beauty and joy in whatever way they can. Kids may not visit often because their spouse isn't welcoming or there is bad blood, so they are lonely. I remind her, we have our social group. She hasn't come to it much before because she is always taking him to dialysis, but now she says she will come often and meet the other women. Many of them are like her, but in the craft they find companionship that has been absent for so much of their lives. I hope there will be renewal for this dear lady and that she can learn more about herself and what brings her joy.

sometimes in knitting you just have to go 'nobody but me will notice this mistake' and keep going

as a knitter, you start to notice how rare it is for characters in tv shows and movies to knit correctly. from worst to best, it ranges from:

- laughably incorrect, just flinging yarn around

- knitting the most basic scarf incredibly slowly because the actor Learned How To Do It For The Role

- old lady actresses casually knitting an intricate lace pattern while doing a monologue

- gromit from wallace and gromit

Today I found out that yarners think crocheting socks is subversive and controversial and I justā€¦on one hand, why the fuck not, I guess yarners are allowed to have their controversies, but on the other, how much time do you have in your FUCKIN DAY??

*waves at* hello! I saw your crochet posts over on Ray's blog, and wanted to simply say this: GODDAMN they're awesome! I'm the one that posted the knitted blankets, both finished and in progress, and it's always nice to see a fellow fiber artist! I think crochet is very pretty, and your projects are absolutely gorgeous. Have a good day!

"waves back like a mad woman" HI! Your knit blankets are amazing! Thank you for reaching out; I was so upset when I didn't see your name to mention in the first post. You sharing your projects with Ray inspired me to share mine with them too. Which sounds odd now that I think about it since I have an IG account that I post to, but that's more of a place of reference for when people ask me for pictures and I don't have my phone, I can send them there and I don't promote it otherwise.

But Ray has such a large following that gets a lot of attention. So intimidating! I can't wait to see more of yours when you share them with Ray.šŸ’– Have a good evening yourself!

Ohh, so this is how asks work.

My husband has argued multiple times that it can't be anything but witchcraft. How else does one take a hook or two needles, a length of string, make some fancy knots and tangles, and have a complete blanket/clothing/toy?

It's witchcraft. Nothing else.

honestly yeah, fiber arts is magic. you cast spell of warm gloves, spell of nice hat, spell of stuffed animal.

material component: yarn

wand: single hooked wand or double pointed wands, depending on caster's preference

mechanical component: specific motions repeated in a particular pattern

time component: a while

look seriously the first step in a knitting recipe is "cast on", and then it's a bunch of letters and numbers incomprehensible to anyone not versed in the arcane art. that's a spellbook. yes it's a book of knitting patterns but also. it's a spell book.
