I’m gonna go ahead and be a film snob and talk about why this is one of my favorite shots from TOS. (I could also say that it’s one of my favorite scenes, because the entire scene actually consists of a single shot.)
We don’t see a lot of bald expressions of emotion in film and television, especially if that emotion is fear or sadness or vulnerability. Dramas will give us some tears, but they always cut a way after a few seconds because a closeup of someone crying is deeply uncomfortable and most movies and TV shows aren’t in the business of making their audiences uncomfortable. It just doesn’t sell well.
But in this scene the camera never looks away. It follows Spock as he sits down at the table, and it circles him as he cries. But there are no cuts. We don’t even get music to create some distance, make it all a little more palatable; we just hear sobs and mumbled math equations.
It’s absolutely excrutiating. It would be excruciating no matter who we were watching, because we are so unaccustomed to seeing unadulterated emotion. And then there’s the fact that it’s a man. And that it’s Spock.
Fifty years later and this is still one of the most daring filmmaking decisions I’ve ever seen on TV (I of course can’t be exactly sure who made it, but I’m assuming it was the director of the episode, Marc Daniels). This shot lasts 1 minute and 45 seconds. We’re in the middle of space and in the middle of a high-stakes episode where the crew is going crazy and the ship is going to blow up or some shit and everyone’s lives are in danger, but we pause 1 minute and 45 seconds to have an uncomfortably human moment with an alien who doesn’t even want to be human, and it’s so awful and amazing.

Follow your star let it guide youits been there for millions of years I sauntered into Spock’s quarters and the shower was running. That’s alright, I’ll wait for him. Its light will shine longer truer and stronger I think I can hear Spock talking to himself, not really something I would think of him as doing, but I guess he is the only person here who thinks like he does. I consider this as I lay down on the couch. The water stopped and I could hear him more clearly now. Than all of your worries and fears follow your starlet it lead you Spock is singing, I didn’t know he could or that he liked to, but he’s really good at it, I wonder why he doesn’t sing when he plays harp. He walks out of the bathroom, still wet and now in his pyjamas. it’s older and wiser than time it’s- He looks up to see me on the couch and stops mid verse. “Oh, hello, Y/N” Spock murmurs, now tinted a light shade of green. “Please don’t stop, I wanna hear you sing. It sounded so pretty” I plead with him, I can see him giving in and he comes to sit on the couch with me. It’s there to inspire your hopes to aim higherthan any old mountain you climb He moves me so that my head is in his lap and begins to rub my shoulder. fools follow rainbows but rainbows disappearwhen the sun warms the earthand the sky grows clear Spock looks down at me briefly before softly pressing a hand to my face and rubbing my cheek with his thumb. fools follow daydreams that soon will be gonebut that faithful old starjust shines on and on I look up at him in pure adoration, I’ve never heard anyone sing like this. follow your star let it show you that troubles seem worse than they are never think of them you’ll rise above them if you just follow your star follow follow your star “Now I believe it’s time for bed, T’hy’la” Spock uttered as he began to guide me to bed with a hand on my lower back.

"Second star to the right, and straight on till morning," Kirk told Chekov at the end of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. After he said that, they gave the original characters a few seconds of screen time before fading out. Then across a screen of stars, the actors signed their names (and I might have teared up ALOT lol). I then took the final images and those signatures and combined them into a gif. Such a good movie (minus the slow clap near the end lol)

In honor of Leonard Nimoy’s 93rd birthday, I’d like to shine a light on a couple of his lesser known roles: those of Rashi and Maimonides, two great Rabbis in Jewish history.
Nimoy hugely influenced me not only by his portrayal of Spock, but through the ways he showed the world his Judaism without fear, and with nothing but love and pride.
Happy heavenly birthday, Mr. Nimoy. May your memory be a blessing. 🖖🏻
