libby app guide

aka how to support libraries and get books and audiobooks for free without pirating them.

Libby App Guide

disclaimer: this is so easy. it is also really fun.

one: download the libby app. you’ll open it and it’ll ask you to add a library.

Libby App Guide

two: get a library card. don’t have one? good news, it’s really easy and i am saying this as the laziest person on earth. it varies what you need to have to get a card library to library but almost all libraries will let you get one online. i have a card for my home town and for the town i moved to. sometimes you only need an email address, sometimes you need an area code. to get mine it took me about 5 minutes of lying on the couch aimlessly tapping on my phone. follow your heart. you can get cards for places you don’t currently live. i will leave the ethics of that up to you but it’s probably better than pirating and either way you’re creating traffic for libraries which is what they need to exist.

Libby App Guide

three: add your card. you can add multiple cards for multiple libraries. you need the number. i have never had libby fail to recognize a valid account.

four: search for your book! some will be ready to borrow right away. others have an estimated delivery time. libby will always pick the one that’s the fastest from the options available at all the libraries you have cards at. you can borrow audiobooks and ebooks. libby will send you a notification when you’re book is ready to borrow. in my experience it’s a lot faster than the estimate. if you aren’t ready to read it, you can ask to be skipped over in line so you keep your place at the front but let someone else read it first.

Libby App Guide

five: read it!!! kindle is the most common way to do this. you can go to your loan and click read with kindle. it’ll download it to all your devices where you have kindle. as long as you have the loan, it’ll act like your book. when the loan ends, if the device is connected to the internet, it’ll automatically be returned. it will save all your notes and highlights. (if you disconnect your device from the internet, it won’t return the book. weewoo.)

anyway in case anyone else has been wondering about it, i really love it. is a nice surprise to see what i’m going to get and it’s cut my reading costs down big time! it’s also neat because i get to synch my books between devices unlike downloading books through cough cough other means. good luck!

I finally scrounged up enough motivation to read System Collapse and oh my god, it’s amazing. When it first came to my library/Libby I got it and couldn’t manifest the interest required for my ADHD brain to read it, can’t remember why exactly, so I had to wait until I could get it again and it’s a lot more popular than I expected.

Side note, if you read the ebooks on Libby through the Kindle app you can just return the book right after you’ve gotten it on the app, Kindle handles the borrow separately from Libby so you can still read it for the whole month after you’ve gotten it even if you return it on Libby

Back to the main topic, I got so immersed in Murderbot fan fiction I kinda forgot what happened and what didn’t, so it took me a bit to connect the fact that this book is set right after Network Effect because I’m used to self contained stories, Fugitive Telemetry did not help with this.

This book basically wrapped up everything from Network Effect while also adding everything else I wanted in a new book, which I didn’t expect to happen in the same book but looking back at looks entirely feasible, witchcraft.

10/10 amazing addition to an amazing series

Broke: Libby is some random girl that Jonah met (frisbee camp or elsewhere) and now likes and we get jealous Andi and Jandi drama

Woke: Libby Beck (sister, cousin, it doesn’t matter) and learning about her gives us insight and introduction into Jonah’s home and family life. Jonah knowing ASL already because of this.

HELLO if your area does not have a public library i would just like to make it known that some libraries offer free cards to people who aren’t in the area! i currently have two cards on Libby, one for my local public library and one for QLL (queer liberation library). search “free out of state library cards” and a few different lists should pop up :)

edit: you can also search “free libby libraries” for digital cards!!!

I am 🌟 COLLECTING 🌟 library cards

Reminder that the Libby App (library app - has books, audio, graphic novels) let's you add multiple libraries, you just need your card number and pin, and when you search for materials will search all of the data bases you have access to! Making the chances of you getting the book (and quickly for example if one library has a wait-list for the book, another might not) much better!!!

Don't buy books from Audible/Amazon when you can use free public resources even if you can't leave your house! You can even apply for library cards online without going in and usually get a 30 day grace period before having to go in with a license/id for a permanent library card 💖💖💖

And if your library does not have what you want, ask a librarian if they can get it! Or check their website for pages marked "inter-library loan," "ILL," or "suggest a title."

Often they can get things from a different library (e.g. all public libraries in the state of Maryland borrow from each other via Marina, and colleges might borrow from other college libraries).

Libraries may also purchase specific titles if you ask them to (and if they can't get them through ILL). If you're trying to avoid giving money to the author, this may not be preferable, though it could reduce the total number of purchases of the thing - because now others can get it from the library too. But this is a good resource in general.

If you can't get it through libraries or piracy, you can also try secondhand sales (garage sales, ebay) or sharing with a friend.

I believe in separating the art from the artist. Publically and loudly condemning the terrible actions of an artist is helpful for holding them accountable and discouraging the terrible behavior. Financially boycotting them may help too. But depriving myself of the art doesn't help the cause. It doesn't generally help me, either - it usually hurts like the dickens. It's just misplaced energy.

But also, make your own decisions.

And support your libraries.

I saw some people struggle with this, so just putting this out there:

For those of us wanting to separate the art from the artist by pirating shows/movies/books, but are unfamiliar with pirating: Let me know what piece of media you want and I'll find a link for you and help out on how to do it. Don't know if Tumblr has any rules about sharing links like that, so to be safe I'll send them via DM

How I Spent January 2024: Exploring the World Through Free Audiobooks on the Libby App

How I Spent January 2024: Exploring The World Through Free Audiobooks On The Libby App

As we kick off another year, many of us find ourselves seeking new forms of entertainment that are engaging, enriching, and easily accessible. In January 2024, I embarked on a personal challenge to listen to one audiobook each day using the Libby app connected to my local library. Little did I know that this simple decision would lead me down an incredible path of free entertainment, clutter-free living space, and a wealth of information.

1. The Power of Audiobooks:

Audiobooks have been gaining popularity in recent years, offering a convenient alternative to traditional reading. With busy schedules and limited time for leisure activities, listening to books has become increasingly appealing. By utilizing the Libby app, which connects users with their local library's vast collection of digital content, I discovered an extensive catalog of audiobooks waiting to be explored.

2. Free Entertainment at My Fingertips:

One of the most significant advantages of utilizing the Libby app was the cost-effectiveness it offered. Unlike buying physical copies or subscribing to audiobook platforms, borrowing from the library through Libby allowed me to enjoy countless hours of captivating storytelling without spending a single penny. This not only saved me money but also opened up doors to genres and authors I may not have otherwise considered.

3. No Clutter, No Problem:

Another unexpected benefit I experienced during my month-long journey was the absence of physical clutter caused by accumulating books at home. As someone who appreciates minimalism and values a tidy living space, relying on digital copies eliminated any concerns about storage limitations or adding unnecessary bulk to my shelves. It was liberating to indulge in diverse literature without worrying about where to store it all afterward.

4. Gaining Information and Expanding Horizons:

Beyond mere entertainment value, my audiobook challenge allowed me to gain knowledge and broaden my horizons. Each day, I delved into various subjects, genres, and perspectives, ranging from biographies to self-help books, historical fiction to science fiction. My understanding of the world grew exponentially as I absorbed insights from different cultures, eras, and ideologies – all while going about my daily routine.

5. Developing a Daily Ritual:

Listening to an audiobook each day became more than just a challenge; it turned into a cherished ritual that enhanced my overall well-being. Whether accompanying me during mundane tasks or providing solace during long commutes, these narrated tales transformed formerly monotonous activities into moments of inspiration and intellectual stimulation.

My January 2024 journey spent listening to one audiobook per day through the Libby app connected to my local library was nothing short of transformative. Not only did I uncover a vast array of free entertainment options but also found myself immersed in captivating stories that expanded my understanding of the world. Moreover, by embracing digital copies instead of physical clutter, I maintained a clean living space without sacrificing literary exploration.

If you're looking for an accessible way to enjoy an abundance of literature while minimizing expenses and decluttering your home, I highly recommend exploring the wonders offered by your local library's partnership with apps like Libby, or even Audible, Spotify, and YouTube! Embrace this modern form of reading and embark on your own adventure through the power of audiobooks!

3, 9, 26, 44 for those asks! 😁

Hi, lovely!! These got long, so I gotta stick them under a cut. Thanks for taking the time to send an ask!! <33

3. Do you like pasta?

🌱 I think my Nona would roll over in her grave if I said I didn't like pasta. I LOVE pasta! Gnocchi is my favorite, but I also adore farfalle. That was her preferred pasta noodle, and she made it every Sunday when I was growing up. I love her to death, and I miss her every day.

9. Cotton candy or funnel cake?

🌱 Funnel cake! When I was younger, during the summers, my uncle and my birth father helped set up and organized the local fair, and the whole family would get everything on the house; my favorite part were the funnel cakes, because our family friend Lorenzo, who also worked the fair, made THE BEST funnel cakes. I still haven't found any better than Uncle Lorenzo's.

26. Do you believe in aliens?

🌱 Short answer, yes. I'm 100% positive that they exist. Long answer: There's an estimated 2 trillion galaxies in our universe, and in physics, the multiverse is possible, though not proven. Regardless of whether or not the multiverse is real, our universe is constantly expanding into who knows what, and there's billions of stars orbited by planetary systems. Out of those systems, we've already found several planets that are in the "Habitable Zone", where planetary temperatures are just right for life to form. It's mathematically and statistically improbable for there not to be at least SOME form of life on those planets, but there's no telling whether the human race could or will make contact with any developed intelligent lifeforms.

44. Do you collect anything?

🌱 Yeah, a couple things, actually! I collect kpop albums, Littlest Pet Shops, One Piece figurines, and also Strawberry Shortcake paraphernalia (but only from the 80s and early 2000s versions). My favorite character from the original is Orange Blossom, and my favorite from the 2000s reboot is Gingersnap! I used to watch the Strawberry Shortcake show and movies on VHS tapes, since we didn't have cable TV growing up, and I loved them so much. I'm pretty sure it's why my favorite colors are pink and green, now.

Alright, I'm gonna go skedaddle to your inbox and be nosy now.

Hoopla, Overdrive/Libby Now Banned for Those Under 18 in Mississippi
BOOK RIOT
Public libraries in Mississippi have cut off access to digital platforms like Overdrive and Hoopla to those under 18.

I never want to hear conservatives go on about repressive censorship in China, North Korea, and Iran ever again
