You had every piece of evidence in a bag, and it was going in the picnic basket you were making up for your scheduled afternoon date in Central Park. The team had given you an actual evidence bag, because if you couldn’t laugh about this sort of thing, well, you might just break down in fear.
You wanted a pretty place to tell him, something special, but nothing too elaborate or too public in case of the potential subsequent meltdown. You had Gil, Jessica, pretty much everyone on standby, and a radio for communication if things went well for his family to come in and celebrate….or in case things went horribly wrong. Jessica’s driver would be on the scene in case he ran. Gil’s was there in case he needed to get away with a father figure. Various types of alcohol were being packed in case he needed a drink, and she had his fast acting anxiety pills as a back up. As a group, they’d thought of everything.
Operation Baby Heist (it was JT’s idea) was in full effect.
You knew he’d fight it. You knew him that well. Each piece of evidence saying you were pregnant wouldn’t be enough to convince him on its own. Your weapons of choice were a photo of your last period cycle in your tracking app, three sanitized and capped off pregnancy tests, of different brands (because science? More variables drawing the same conclusion would help), a urine analysis test result, a blood test result, paperwork with an estimated due date (you’d even waited past the normal safety window to make sure things were even more solid and set in stone) and finally, a sonogram with “Hi, Dad!” typed up on it, and to make it even more clear, an arrow pointed to the little splotch that was in fact, a baby. Your baby…and Malcolm’s.

Skipping the explanation: Watkins is the reason why Ainsley is a killer.
John Watkins was Ainsley's "imaginary friend" when she was little. We know Watkins was a killer at that point in his life.
The season 2 teaser also has (I'm assuming) Ainsley as a little girl. She appears to be having a tea party with stuffed animals. There's an empty seat, possibly for an imaginary friend. I think the empty seat is for John Watkins. Reminding us that he visited Ainsley when she was little.
My theory is that Watkins was trying to teach Ainsley about killing. He knew that Martin intended to kill Malcolm, and we know (when Malcolm's an adult) that Watkins wants to make Malcolm a killer.
What if he wanted to make Ainsley a killer because he knew that there wouldn't be a chance to make Malcolm one? Maybe he even brought her animals to practice on.
Since Ainsley was so young when Martin was arrested, (and the tunnel was closed, ending the visits) she wouldn't necessarily remember everything she was taught. But if Watkins did bring her animals to practice on, and if she liked it, some part of Ainsley's subconscious might have remembered what that felt like.
When she slit Endicott's throat, her face is calm. Then there was some time before she stabs him multiple times. When Endicott falls, dead, and she's just standing there, Ainsley isn't ashamed or shocked by what's she's done. She's just calm and is curious why that just happened.
That's not a normal reaction. While her technique doesn't seem professional, her reaction seems like it's not her first time killing.
I think that's because of John Watkins and not because she's Martin Whitley's daughter. Thanks for sitting through that!

Yes!!! Prodigal son was soooo good! Malcolm Bright deserved better. And Ainsley too. The dynamics were so good I’m actually getting irritated again because I had heard the show could have been picked up by Netflix but it never happened😭 so much unresolved plot😭 I’m heartbroken again lol

Gil stepping up as a parental figure, like I can't even begin to describe how much I adore found family or in this case the family that chooses you and you love them back. And the dynamic that he shares with his team, especially Edrisa, is very veryyy dear to me like I would fight for them. They are just sooo *incoherent mumbling and crying*
I think this is one of those shows where I genuinely loved the mother, because Jessica Whitly is not a plain character. She has her fears and yet she's just as unhinged if it's about her children or anyone she genuinely cares for. She's sassy too, I love that. I think being sassy and unhinged is a genetic thing in the Whitly family.
As I'm writing about them now, I miss them more. I remember watching it daily when it aired. What made it stand out from most shows, for me, is that it has a protagonist who is utterly haunted but it does not stop him from being absolutely hilarious. In fact, any other show would've made him stoic and something stereotypical. Distanced, so to speak. But everytime he's on screen, it feels like he's alive; we are not mere spectators. We feel his grief, his desperation to be his own person, his love, friendship, everything.
This makes him and every character on this show special.

I get the vibe that even before Martin was arrested Malcolm was still kinda an outcast. I think his dad was really his best friend which made everything even worse. So it was even easier for kids who always thought Malcolm was kinda odd and weird to bully him after they found out about his father being a serial killer. And Malcolm must have felt so alone, with his mother dealing with her own grief and Ainsley being much younger and his father gone and everyone seemed to blame him for everything that went wrong and Ugh
