What if the beginning was him showing "signs" that he (in character) isn't mentally okay? Like, not insane wise, that just demonizes panic attacks and mental illness, but in a way that he's been through this more than once? Not even because he says "it's happening again" or "I couldn't save them again", which are huge factors, but because he sees the issues with everything and wants to actively help it,

He just isn't capable yet.

As another post I saw read, "For a man in black and white, he's the only one who can see in grey" which, if you aren't understanding like I did at first, means for a man who is made of two sides (black/white), he only sees as neutral (grey) or none at all.
