Wow! Such a great work!

After thirteen years and eight months, Napoleon Crossing the Saint-Bernard is finally complete.
I know I don’t usually share my own work on this blog, but after completing such an undertaking, I figure that all of you would like to humor me by seeing this. This is from a pattern by Golden Kite, after the original painting by Jacques-Louis David. Napoleone was stitched on 18ct Aida fabric with 106 solid and blended colors of DMC thread.
To get a sense of perspective, here’s a picture of me with my handiwork.

I have a few things on deck next, but mostly I’m just going to bask in the glow of my achievement.

Моя первая и пока единственная работа гладью. Отправилась на стену к одному замечательному человеку в качестве подарка.
My very first satin-stitch work. It was presented to one very nice person as a gift.
👏🏼

Today the Department of Extraordinary Embroidery is marveling at this awesomely exquisite cross-stitched recreation of John William Waterhouse’s 1908 Pre-Raphaelite painting, The Soul of the Rose. It was painstakingly created, one x-shaped stitch at a time, over a 4 year period by the mother of Twitter user @TamSepulveda.

Got myself darning loom or speedweve. Mine is made back in Soviet days, and has already helped me darn 2 pairs of socks 🧦

Fall Patch. approx 3" diameter, craft felt and embroidery thread, front and back.
this is what I made today. it took me about 3 hours off and on. figured I'm putting up so much old stuff I should mix it up with something new.
I'm taking a small break from working on my giant embroidery project to play around a little with other needlework techniques, and also working small and quick is rewarding. it keeps the dopamine flowing to finish things.

second patch for today. I used a little bit of this paisley quilting fabric in the middle, otherwise it's felt and embroidery thread..
if I was a sincereist, this is probably the heart I would be wearing on my sleeve. working small has been fun, but I should plan out something nice and complicated tomorrow.

Today I made a Christmas ornament. (and also did muh nails)
it is a snowflake made out of felt. I stuffed it with the little scrappy bits of felt that I had leftover so it's a bit of a little pillow. it looks good and is now hanging on my tree.
Yes, I copied the design off something I found on pinterest. because I am a hack. you'll note I didn't do as good of a job of it as Jody Bishel does, so I don't feel too bad about it.

Cascadia flag patches.
done by me in cotton DMC thread on post-consumer polyester felt.
I'm feeling derivative tonight. so sue me.
also, these are Christmas presents, BUT FOR WHOM??

Have you ever walked through an evergreen forest to clear your mind? Eaten a nice warm vegetable stew? Received flowers from someone you love? Well... thank our hidden hero:
Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi!
Hidden beneath your feet, nestled away inside the roots of 80-90% of vascular plants, there is a complex network of hyphae working in tandem with their plant buddies to keep our ecosystems alive and thriving!
Essentially, these microscopic fungi give plants Super Tolerance. Hyphae are much smaller than roots, which means that they can reach out farther while expending less energy and worm their way into places that are normally inaccessible to plants. This allows vascular plants to access more mineral nutrients than they normally could on their own. These fun-guys are so effective that some plants can even live their lives completely achlorophyllic (without chlorophyll)!
In return, plants will partition some of the carbon and simple sugars produced from photosynthesis to give to their buddies. This is done through vesicles formed by hyphae in the plant cells.
This isn't anything new either! In fact, you might even thank AMF for plants migrating onto land at all. A popular hypothesis for the colonization of land by plants is that the first vascular plants formed from an ancient partnership between algae and fungi, where essentially the fungi would act as the algae's roots to collect nutrients not available to the algae alone outside the water. If you'd like to see a cool example, look up the Rhynie chert!!
Thank you for letting me ramble a while at you about my favorite organisms on this planet :•) I encourage all of you to do some more research on your own, there is a TON that I haven't covered here! If you have access to a microscope, you can even dissect and stain some common garden roots to say hello to these little buddies yourself!
