Norse Heathen - Tumblr Posts

Something different from what you can usually see on my blog, but here is a commission I finished very recently (well... Today, to be honest 😂).

I don't know a lot about Norse mythology (only the basics, y'know), so it was a pleasure to discover an interesting character such as Sigyn and I loved drawing her

Thank you again for your trust and patience 🖤

Sigyn, by Lunidäe

Sigyn, By Lunide

A few months ago, I went to a fantasy fair in Mons (Belgium) and I got to meet the fantastic and always lovely Lunidäe @luniidae

I commissioned her for a Sigyn fan art, and DAMN, isn't it amazing? It kinda reminds me of Uderzo? :D Such amazing talent!! <3

You could even say that Thor slayed :)

Oh you're a Norse pagan who thinks traditional masculinity is threatened by men painting their nails and feminism is destroying society? Tell that to Thor. You know, the god of thunder who fought Jotuns in full drag to protect a woman's right to choose. Go on, I dare you

Fenrir: Devotional Acts + Offerings + Memes Because Why Not (UPG).
Fenrir: Devotional Acts + Offerings + Memes Because Why Not (UPG).

Feeling angry is extremely valid and important. You can offer it, especially if you have anger issues. All strong emotions are an excellent offering! From anger, frustration, anxiety, everything is valid.

Triggers. Many of us have things that can trigger triggers, and we can give all that to the great wolf Fenrir. You don't need to justify it to give it to him, just do it. He'll understand.

Howl and growl. We've always been taught a lot about keeping our composure, and honestly, I don't give a shit. Bring out your inner savagery and allow yourself to walk on all fours, growl, howl when you're alone. Devour the meat on your plate, muss your hair and move like an animal in your room to the beat of a song like Welcome To The Jungle.

Dedicate the pain, the suffering. The pain of your muscles when you get a tattoo, the pain of your skin when you get a tattoo and the pain when you get a piercing. It can also be the pain of your traumas, the pain your inner child felt, anything is possible.

Donate to wolf protection centers, even adopt one where you donate money to take care of it! Do not keep it as a pet, of course.

Wear outfits, accesories, stuff in general, in black, brown, or earth-colored.

Practice self-care. He appreciates this very much.

BE YOURSELF. He was put in chains for expressing himself as he is. Do the same: be yourself, speak for yourself, express what you feel, your opinions, and stand up for those who cannot, either because they are shy, or because they are people who have a disability, for example people with paralysis.

Take trips to the mountains, or surround yourself with nature whenever you can. Listen to the sound of the rain, admire the color of the forest, its smells, everything.

Free yourself from your chains: go to therapy to heal everything you need to heal so you can free yourself more and more.

Be kind to stray animals. Leave food for stray dogs, water, etc. And if you can't, be kind to them, give them a smile, a cuddle, etc.

Offer him the anger or helplessness you feel in situations of injustice.

Offer him meat. If you don't eat meat, you can tell him without fear! You can offer him not to eat animals so that they do not suffer, it is also a beautiful offering. Thus, like him, they will not be tortured.

Offer him your trust. He was betrayed, so let him know that you will not. Place your hand on his mouth to let him know that you trust him completely.

Offer him your company. He is extremely lonely, locked up in a cave totally tied up and with a sword through his jaws. He loves to be accompanied.

What Is Norse Heathenry?

What is Norse Heathenry?

Norse Heathenry is a contemporary pagan spirituality derived from the beliefs, customs, superstitions, and folklore of the pre-Christian Norse people. It is one of a few different kinds of Heathenries, which include Slavic Heathenry and Teutonic (Germanic) Heathenry.

The word "heathen" means "of the heaths." However, it's not a word the Old norse people themselves used. They didn't have a word for their spiritual belief system, as they didn't distinguish this from all other aspects of their lives. Rather, "Heathen" was coined by Christian writers to refer to Scandinavian pagans (this is also why it's sometimes used interchangeably with the word "heretic").

Nowadays, Norse Heathenry is referred to by many names, which reflects different developing iterations of it. Amongst these names are Norse Paganism, Asatru, and Forn Sidr / Forn Sed.

What Is Norse Heathenry?

Where does Norse Heathenry come from?

Norse Heathenry comes from the Nordic countries of Europe: Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands. These places are also known as the homelands of the vikings. But despite their shared origins, Norse Heathenry is not the religion of the vikings. This very large misconception has a very long, complex history behind it, owed to a combination of commercialization and fascist tampering. The Heathenry we see in America is extremely muddied from these influences. Fortunately, we now have the means to disambiguate it, thanks to increasingly accessible cultural exchange.

The following explanation is a product of ongoing anthropological, theological, and cultural research, in combination with what we know about the historical.

What Is Norse Heathenry?

Norse Heathen Beliefs

Unlike organized religions, Norse Heathenry is (and has always been) a decentralized belief system. This means it has no universal doctrines, no orthopraxy or orthodoxy, no holy texts, and no religious figurehead governing it. When you hear people say "There's no 'right' way to practice Heathenry," this is generally what they're referring to.

However, Norse Heathenry does have a distinct way of thinking about and viewing the world, and it's very different from what we usually see here in the US. If you're feeling stuck trying to figure out how to "do Heathenry," this would be why.

What Is Norse Heathenry?

Animism

A staple of Norse Heathen epistemology is Animism.

Usually, Animism is defined as the belief that all things have a spirit or vital essence to them. But this is only one definition of many, and not the definition that applies here.

The Norse concept of Animism is "the awareness that all things are part of an interdependent ecosystem." This changes how we engage with everything around us. We understand that when we interact with the forces of this world, they will interact back on their own merit. Our relationship with all things is a social one, and we're not spectators in our environment, but active participants at all times.

This stands is stark contrast to the way the USAmericans typically view the world: As a landscape to either test or be tested by, with the forces of the world acting as the means through which this is done.

Additionally, there's no separation between the sacred and the profane.

What Is Norse Heathenry?

Immanence

Faiths that focus on spiritual ascension, enlightenment, or attaining a good afterlife are known as transcendent faiths.

While Norse Heathenry has some transcendent elements, it's ultimately an immanent belief system, which means its focus is on living life for the sake of living, as opposed to living life to receive a good afterlife. A good afterlife is already guaranteed.

(Some Heathens may strive for a specific kind of afterlife, however, which do have certain conditions for accessing. But these are elective rather than required, and different as opposed to superior. It's all a matter of preference, at the end of the day.)

What Is Norse Heathenry?

The Norse Gods

Many people are already familiar with the Norse gods, such as Thor, Odin, Loki, and Freyja, but not many people are familiar with how they operate as gods.

In Hellenism and Religio Romano, the gods are divine lords who preside over different domains of society. It's a reflection of what the ancient Greeks and Romans highly valued in their civilizations: Law and political/civic involvement.

In Norse Heathenry, however, gods don't operate in a lordship capacity. Instead, they're more like celebrities in that they're celebrated figures everyone knows about.

While they don't rule over one thing or another, the Norse gods often act as allegorical representations of worldly phenomena. Thor is to thunderstorms as Loki is to "random-chance odds." SIf is to wheat-fields as Odin is to the old wandering beggar. Frey and Freyja represent masculine and feminine principles, Skadi the driven snow and foggy winter, and so on. The gods exist as worldly experiences inasmuch as they exist as ideas.

Lastly, but importantly, the Norse gods don't distribute rewards or punishments in accordance with on one's actions or deeds, nor do they tell us how we ought to live our lives. The way they interact with us depends on our individual relationships with them, which can be just as diverse as the ones we have with each other.

What Is Norse Heathenry?

Myths & Folklore

What people often refer to as the "Norse Myths" are stories found in two old Icelandic texts called the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda. These texts are special because they're the oldest and largest collection of tales featuring the Norse deities.

However, these texts represent just one region's period-specific interpretation of Norse folklore. They also only represent a fraction of the tales that still circulate within Nordic oral traditions, so not only are they not "canon" in the usual sense of the word, they're also just a sample.

This is all to say that Norse Heathenry doesn't have a hard body of mythology. It certainly has a defined one, but its definition is built from local legends, fairy tale humor, songs, customs, superstitions, and family folklore in addition to what survives on runestones and parchment. The corpus of Heathenry is very much a living, breathing thing.

What Is Norse Heathenry?

Spirits

Norse Heathenry recognizes a wide variety of different beings, the likes of which can be found all around us. Some of these beings are like how we typically imagine spirits, in that they're incorporeal or otherwordly, while others are physical but may play tricks on you so you can't see them.

Like many things pertaining to Heathenry, there isn't a universally-shared classification system for Norse beings. But generally-speaking, beings are defined by their natures and the manner in which they relate to the rest of the world, rather than their morphology. For example, Trolls can take the appearance of rocks, trees, and also living people, but they can also be incorporeal spirits. This is all, however, the same kind of Troll, rather than being different types of trolls.

This is also why the lines between "spirit", "god," and "ancestor" can become very blurry at times. In English use, these are all typically labeled under the category "vaetter." Sometimes "wight" is used to refer to spirits of various types, but isn't often used to refer to gods.

Typically, the way people interact with spirits entirely depends on what kind of spirit they're dealing with, as well as their disposition towards human beings. Some spirits may enjoy a personal relationship, while others are best when left unbothered.

What Is Norse Heathenry?

Values & Morality

Because Norse Heathenry has no doctrine and is immanent in nature, it has no fixed value system. Just like the stories were decentralized, so were the Norse people's values.

This is a feature as opposed to a flaw, and a fact as opposed to a theory. But it also has a habit of making Americans very uncomfortable.

For this reason, Heathens sometimes choose to construct their own value system to observe as part of their practice. But what those values are is up to each individual.

Anyone claiming Norse Heathenry has a universal value system is either new to Heathenry, or selling something.

What Is Norse Heathenry?

Veneration

Heathen veneration is not just limited to gods, but also includes ancestors and even certain kinds of spirits, such as nisse/tomte.

Like most things in Norse Heathenry, what, who, and how a Heathen chooses to venerate is their choice to make. One popular observance across the globe is to craft altars, shrines, or similar sacred spaces for the entities one venerates. If a Heathen lives in a house that has a nisse (similar to a gnome), they might leave porridge (with butter) by the hearth for him, and he'll in turn bless the house with good luck and fortune.

Oftentimes, relationships with entities are very interpersonal. Heathenry's animistic and immanent nature means entities are rarely cold and distant, including the gods.

What Is Norse Heathenry?

Misconceptions!

A list of misconceptions off the top of my head:

The practice known as 'Odinism' is an invention of the Germanic Volkish movement, which was the social precursor to Nazi Germany. This is also, unfortunately, the first kind of "heathenry" to be brought to the US, back in the 1970's. It was spread through the country via one of the fastest-moving networks at the time: The US prison system.

The Black Sun is a Nazi symbol, not a Heathen one.

No, Norse Heathenry is not a closed practice.

No, you don't have to have Scandinavian heritage to practice Norse Heathenry. Blood quantum is not a thing.

The rune alphabets are old, but the method of runecasting is new.

So is the use of magical bindrunes.

Bindrunes are also different from Galdrastafir. The latter is actually a form of Jewish-Christian-Norse syncretism and needs to be taught orally since it's a mystery tradition. You can still slap the Helm of Awe on things and look cool about it though.

Norse Heathenry is not the same as being a viking, and Norse Heathens are not vikings. However, some Heathens partake in viking reenactment as an extension of their practice.

There's no good or bad gods in Norse Heathenry. All the gods are capable of great good and great bad, just like people. They're fallible, and that's what makes them relatable.

Odin and Loki aren't at odds with one another.

You don't need to wait for a god to pick you to start venerating them.

Animal Fylgjur

"The animal fylgja was a sort of "mirror", appearing at special moments in animal form, of the person it belonged to. It could not affect its owner any more than its owner could affect it; seeing a scene (usually in a dream) involving a fylgja was like watching a film, but one that recounted the future. It was not a free soul with any existence independent of the person it belonged to. The fylgja is to be distinguished from people undertaking a hamfor, a journey in an assumed animal form, and also from hugir, which might take on the form of animals.

The animal fylgja could be seen by its owner or by someone else, in a waking or sleeping state. The type of animal a fylgja manifested itself as indicated the nature of the person it belonged to, and any injury to or activity by the fylgja indicated what lay imminently in store for its owner. The fylgja usually acted as a premonition of death [...]. Sometimes, however, it is premonitory in a different way [... and can be used to reveal the owner's] true nature."

Oh my word hi!!! I can’t believe I found someone who works with Sigyn!! I’ve been working with Loki for a short while now and he said that Sigyn likes me and wants to work with me too, but I looked all over the place and there’s like nothing about her anywhere— can you tell me some stuff about her? Thank you!! Also totally fine if you can’t/don’t want to answer this ask!!

-🐍

Hey, 🐍!

No worries at all, I am always happy to help!

Sigyn is VERY difficult to find information on, due to the lack of surviving stories around her. The only way I really found information was through local Scandinavian folk tales, as there are many that have similar traits regarding her. Here's some of the info I've found + UPG, but of course, I always recommend looking into it yourself and doing what feels right to you:

~ To me, Sigyn is a goddess of victory, loyalty, protection of children, protection of the home, and temperance (UPG and folk lore mostly)

~ She enjoys offerings that remind her of her children, Narfi/Nari and VĂĄli; children's toys, stuffed animals, candies, and cute wolf-related imagery are usually good (bonus points if it's something from your childhood)

~ Bowls, honey, apples, candies, and mead make great offerings

~ She likes sakura flowers and cute things

~ She also enjoys songs that empower women, slow songs, and songs with meaningful lyrics (love songs also works)

~ She and Loki love each other VERY dearly

If it helps, I can include how her personality is for me. She presents herself in a very motherly and gentle way, but she can be extremely protective and is VERY powerful. She doesn't flaunt her power, however, and tends to be really chill about it, actually. When she and Loki are in the same space, they are very affectionate towards each other, and it's honestly really cute. ☺️💕

Something you can also do for her as a devotional act is "hold her bowl". According to mythos, she holds a bowl over the chained Loki's forehead to catch venom dripping onto him for eternity. To honor her, you can hold a bowl in your hands for however long you're able with a devoted candle lit for her. I recommend doing this in front of her altar. Since I have a disability, it's best to do it for 15 minutes or so, but you're welcome to hold it for a longer or shorter time, if you'd like to try it!

I hope this helps you in some way, but if you have more questions, please feel free to ask! Talking about Sigyn is absolutely awesome; it's super hard to find people who actually worship her these days. Anyway, take care!

Re: Christian-Norse syncretism: I think Christianity and Asatru were two humanitarian religions that brought out the worst in each other and continue to do so.

Nah. Christianity shat the bed hundreds of year before conversion efforts began in Scandinavia, thanks to Emperor Constantine. As soon as the nobles decided to use Christianity as their tool for political gain and conquest, rather than Religio Romano, that was the nail in the coffin for Christianity as a humanitarian religion.

We have it on record that Christians strategized to get the Norse people acclimated to the new religion; namely, to slowly introduce Christian elements into their worldview in ways that feel familiar. They built churches to look exactly like hofs, peppered Christian motifs into Norse folklore, and adapted mythologies to reflect Christian values. These things grew more Christian and less Heathen as time went on; stave churches had expansions built to give them the cross-shape, Loki had horns slapped on his head, etc. Something something frog in a pot of water.

(Which reminds me: I totally forgot the most obvious examples of syncretism because I was too busy thinking about saints—Loki with the Devil, Baldr with Jesus, Odin with God, Ask and Embla / Líf and Lífþrasir with Adam and Eve, Ragnarok with Armageddon, Valhalla with Heaven, and Helheim with Hell. There are others in there too but they're less overt.)

The funny thing about this is that it didn't take.

Nobody's out there equating Loki with the Devil these days besides Americans. Nearly every Scandinavian I've met has been able to tell me how something was Christianized and what it looked like before ("This originally represented Odin," "This was originally symbolic of Freyr," etc.). Clearly some traditions were lost, but the history of it all isn't mysterious to Scandinavians like it is for Americans.

The thing that made Asatru nasty was the 1890's Germanic Volkisch Movement, which eventually gave rise to Naziism. After Nazi Germany fell, this nasty Heathenry, Odinism, was brought to the US and spread through one of the fastest-moving networks of information in the time before the internet—the US prison system.

Ever since then, it's been used as the right-wing alternative to the various progressive spiritual movements that rose during the 70's. And because many Americans don't know what religion looks like outside of Christianity, they latch onto the old propaganda that was used to convert Scandinavia.

Which is why I have an entire website dedicated to disambiguating literally all of this nonsense.

This shit is wildly complicated, but we have objective facts regarding the relationship of Christianity and Heathenry.

Ex atheist pagans deserve to have their experiences acknowledged by the community.

Ex Muslim pagans deserve to have their experiences acknowledged by the community.

Non practicing Jewish pagans deserve to have their experiences acknowledged by the community.

Pagans who have been pagan for most or all of their life deserve to have their experiences acknowledged by the community.
