Stars as a species are covered in these brightly colored markings, the markings are in relation to what a star's head is. For example, Deirdre's markings are bright eyes, occasionally connected by swirls.

On the chest is a central marking, usually it is a representation of the head, as a bigger marking. Stretching out to connect to the rest of them.

Markings serve a few special purposes. From identification to bonding to even starlet care. Those all can be a topic for another day.

Deirdre does not like his markings, unfortunately. Though there are stars who would wish they had them. The markings have just steered him wrong far too many times. Maybe things would have been better if they were different..
