People already condemn relationships between 20 year olds and 25 year olds. People already condemn teenagers safely exploring sex and sexuality through literature. People already condemn 18 year olds having sex.
We are living in an era that is striving to simultaneously shove sex down our throats and make it borderline illegal to even think about sex. Drink adverts will show half-naked girls fawning over bottles and cans but women in the streets are being beaten and raped for wearing skirts or showing their hair or simply having the misfortune of being born with an extra hole.
The word 'pedophilia' has been watered down so badly that men in their forties are being accused of it for dating women in their late twenties. There's a post that's been circulating Facebook for as long as I can remember loudly declaring that 20 and 25 is still pedophilia. 16 and 18 is still pedophilia. 60 and 30 is still pedophilia.
Men dating short women is pedophilia. Men dating skinny women is pedophilia. Men dating women with small breasts or youthful faces or girls with higher voices is pedophilia.
Women dressing in cute outfits is pedobaiting. Women striving to look cute instead of hot is pedobaiting. Women who enjoy older men are pedobaiting.
I cannot stress this enough. One, none of that is correct. Two, literature does not equate to real actions.
If pedophiles genuinely are writing out their desires on AO3 instead of touching real children, guess what?
That's a good thing.
If victims of pedophilia are using AO3 to write about their trauma and process it and outlet it?
That's a good thing.
If reading a piece of fiction where your favorite character is groomed actually helps you realize the signs and methods of grooming?
That's a good thing.
If people are using literature to explore harmless desires and ideas?
That is literally what literature is for.
Re; censorship, if you still think discussing how one seemingly harmless act of censorship can actually trigger a landslide of creative suffocation is just dramatics, understand that Conservatives hopped straight from 'we need to stop pedophiles having such easy access to children' to 'saying the word gay or teaching children about their own biology is tantamount to grooming.'
Censorship is biased, prejudiced, and dangerous. It has its place within very careful structures but it is not something to wield like a hammer and it is certainly not something to advocate for in artistic and creative spaces.
You want an AO3 without all of that stuff? Guess what? They tried to make one. It never got further than a domain and an idea because nobody involved or supporting it could actually agree on their own rules and ideas about what should be censored and why.
Nobody is forcing you to look at that literature. AO3 explicitly gives you multiple tools to help you stay away from it. AO3, across literally any literature collection online, gives you the most tools to avoid it.
"Why can't the freaks on AO3 just go and make a site for all the gross stuff and leave AO3 alone."
Because AO3 is that site. Because AO3 was that site long before you decided AO3 was better than the sites you bullied us off of before, and I can promise you if someone somehow comes up with a fanfic site you like better specifically for the 'gross stuff' you'll try to bully us off that too so you can benefit from it.
AO3's specific core purpose is to preserve fanfiction, yes, but it was also instigated as a host site for the fanfiction that kept getting yeeted off other platforms like Wattpad. Its designed to preserve all fanfiction, not just the fanfiction you, personally, think is 'allowed' to be written.
AO3 is the site for all the gross stuff the freaks make. We've been there just as long as you. We've been funding it just as long as you have. AO3 has specifically said you have a place here. The timeline was literally:
Wattpad/FF.net/LiveJournal purge fanfics > AO3 is born > The people who's fics got purged moved over to AO3 > AO3 gains popularity as the best functioning site > The people who pushed for the fics to be purged off Wattpad move to AO3 > The same people try to push for AO3 to purge fics.
AO3's source coding is open-access. You go make a polished, strict, rigid site where nothing 'icky' is allowed. You go make a site where you can control what is hosted. We already have our space.

um okay but actually that's not what this is about or even remotely close to the point of the post and deliberately taking it in bad faith to pull the 'evil racist white people' card completely ignores that even people of color have been asking for spaces where they are safe to simply Enjoy Things without being reminded of the issues they face in real life
Anyway. Asking people not to talk about genocide or trauma-dump on complete strangers in every single community space they insert themselves into is not even remotely the same as perpetrating bigotry. If I'm in a Discord server based on cooking and sharing recipes I am neither expecting nor consenting to you showing me photographs of dead children or suddenly telling me all about how your husband is cheating on you with his secretary.
This is for you. Godspeed and good luck.
I am actually begging some people to just let some spaces exist untouched by real-world issues and horrors.
Like I've lost count of the amount of times peaceful game or fandom servers have been ruined by people stampeding in with political rants, bitching about world issues, demanding internal activism, demanding vent channels so they can whine about their shitty parents, ect.
Like. Respectfully. Not every single space has to be inclusive of and welcoming of outside topics. The real world sucks. We don't needed to be reminded of that absolutely everywhere.
Or. Y'know. You can just let people rest without also turning their need for emotional and mental respite into a massive guilt trip about activism. Again.
Its a nice sentiment, it really is, but that isn't actually rest. Reducing people's privilege and right to rest and enjoyment back down to activism and the horrors of the world literally just voids the entire purpose and nature of rest and enjoyment.
I can assure you that when I'm in those political spaces I'm already thinking about people's rights and the things I have that others do not. I do not need you dangling my respite over my head like an unreachable carrot just to make me keep running on the wheel.

OP is also getting raked over hot coals for being a racist. I wouldn't worry about it.

"Hey guys! Just to remind you that although its important to stay up to date on current events and be politically informed, its also important to have spaces where you can decompress and get away from all the upsetting things for your own health and wellbeing. This is one of those space, so please keep in mind our rules and help this space remain safe and enjoyable for everyone."
"Thank you for helping to keep people aware and informed, but please bear in mind that just as its important to be those things, its also important to have time to decompress and allow yourselves (and others) to process what we've learned and relax and recover. In order to let that happen we do have a rule about not bringing [insert topic violation] into this space. Spaces where people are truly safe to let down their guard and simply exist are few and we take preserving ours seriously."

I have a feeling what I'm about to say is really going to upset you.
(Because the answer is yes.)
But in any case; you do not get to tell the Archive what is and is not allowed to be on there. It tells you. Its not Wattpad. Its not a cutesy little social media platform or literature site like GoodReads.
Its an Archive. By using it, you're consenting to existing in the same space as "that stuff."
Its kind of like.... Lets say going to a museum. When you're looking at mummies and shrunken heads and bones, you're looking at dead people.
You don't get to go the museum and demand they remove the dead people because its uncomfortable and upsetting to you, right? Museums showcase history. When you go to a museum you're consenting to seeing dead things. Dead people.
AO3 is the same. Its an Archive. It was created because censorship is impossible to control. There's a saying that censorship is a beast of insatiable hunger that will consume everything, and its because its true.
Wattpad, for example. Wattpad's rules state no pedophillic content. Which is fine, right? You think its fine.
Until people push for any content involving "underage appearing" characters and people to be removed because its (not) pedophilia.
Until people push for queer content involving twinks to be removed because its (not) pedophilia.
Until minors writing fanfiction about other minors get banned for (not) being pedophiles.
Just recently Wattpad underwent yet another purge where thousands of works were removed for "violating terms" that the content wasn't even close to violating. It was just "too close" for their business partners and the people giving them money and the bigots banding together to apply pressure because that's a tactic that has worked for them in the past.
The Archive does not bend to such pressure. It will not, and it cannot. And it shouldn't.
You can't pick and choose with censorship. You can't control it. You can't stop other people taking a rule you made and twisting it and breaking it apart and using it against content you had no intention of affecting.
Especially in an era where the word 'pedophilia' has been watered down and butchered into an unrecognisable version of its true purpose. 16 & 18 is considered pedophilia by some. 21 & 40 is pedophilia to some.
How can you control what is encompassed as 'pedophilia' if people can't even agree on the definition?
But also;
AO3 gives you a multitude of ways to avoid that content. If you're not using them, that's a user fault. If someone hasn't properly used the Archive warnings, you can report it so its corrected. But AO3 can't help you if you're choosing not to apply filters and properly curate your searches.
I hope this doesn't come across as an attack, because it isn't. I know for a lot of people it can be hard to wrap your head around the entire legal and societal mess that encompasses why AO3 exists in the state that it does. But I can promise you that AO3 is one of the last standing pillars against what would effectively destroy fan-made literature and content as we know it.
I suggest research into the current legal mess that is forced censorship on sites like Tumblr, OnlyFans, Patreon, even in places like schools and community clubs.
Censorship is not (always) a good thing. Everyone is all too happy to push for things they dislike to be removed until someone else is pushing for something they do like to be removed.

User klugpuuo is referring to the fact that I'm a proshipper and is trying to assert that proshipping supports, condones, is a form of and perpetrates abuse.
Which it doesn't. As anything with even a fraction of a functioning braincell would know.
Anyway.
By the way, as much as things being "widely accepted as fanon lore" is fun, if you deliberately shit on someone and their headcanons or the things they enjoy because it doesn't follow that popular opinion, you are a loathsome piece of trash ruining a beautiful natural landscape.
Fanon being popular does not make it true.
Fanon being popular does not make it the only option.
Fanon being popular does not over-ride canon or fan creativity.
"Everybody misses out if one person ruins the good thing" is actually a very effective way to make sure the people who want to ruin the good thing shut the fuck up because they realize very quickly that:
They don't get the good thing either. Being an asshole means nobody gets anything, not just the people they think don't deserve it.
The more they make everyone miss out on the good thing the less welcome they find themselves in a space.
It teaches proper fandom etiquette and consideration.
The only thing that allowing them to behave the way they do teaches is that it not only works, but they themselves are in a position of power to enact it.
If you act like an asshole and subsequently find yourself without content, friends and unwelcome in a fandom space you're going to sit down and keep your mouth shut the next time you have the opportunity to.
top/bottom discourse in the Genshin fandom is annoying
hear me out, I don’t have anything against people who like one fixed dynamic only. Unless they go out of their way to harass other fixed/switch dynamic shippers
and that’s exactly what happened to a zine artist. The zine is for profit, also still in the making but they announced a guest artist who doesn’t care about strict dynamics, they occasionally lean towards the other dynamic (let’s call it vanilla) but would draw the fixed dynamic (chocolate) for this zine
people who wanted chocolate only were angry about the fact that an artist who leans more to vanilla was invited for a chocolate zine. They called it “false advertising” and “being lied to” and “how can we make sure this person will only draw chocolate?!” and “how dare you invite a VANILLA artist for CHOCOLATE!”
the harassment was so bad that the artist deactivated their twitter and I’m really sad to hear that. What more, there were Chinese fixed shipper in the comments who insulted the zine mods and artist, making comments like “it looks you slept with each other” or “if you don’t get why were complaining, you’re stupid!”
and I’m just like… this is no big deal.
This zine is not out yet. No one lost money, no one was hurt by “false advertising”. The zine mods protect the artist and said switch shippers are welcome as long as they draw the fixed dynamic the mods decided on, which the artist will do or would have done. If you don’t like the product, you don’t have to buy it! It makes me sad that something so little exploded into something so big
Unfortunately this isn't just a Genshin issue. Fans are fucking rabid about top/bottom discourse and it usually boils down to some kind of heteronormative-vaguely-sexist flavor.
You see it most often in ships which have very obvious dynamic and personality differences. The "little sunshine one" is always the super feminine uwu bottom. The tallest one is always the top, though some people like to add a little spice by making them a submissive top.
And don't get me wrong—I'm not immune. I have the odd pairing where I'm more fixated on a set sexual dynamic, but I'm a switch shipper through and through. And I'd certainly never try to dictate that my preferences in fanon are the universal rule.
In all honesty, I'd have cancelled the zine. People need to learn that actions have consequences. If you want the fun fandom thing, you have to be respectful. Too many people have caved to fandom pressure and harassment and just aided in educating people that being cunts effectively gets them what they want. People need to learn there are consequences to ruining it for everyone else.
(Because lets be honest, you are going to be nobody's favorite person if everyone knows you're the reason they lost out on something.)
They're currently on sideblog #2 spamming my inbox with DMs about how I'm nothing but a pathetic anti hating on JK Rowling because she's a hard working female. Do with the ask as you please, but over-all I think its pretty clear to anyone who looks at my blog that I am definitely not an anti 😂
I do keep blocking them, but I will commend their persistence.
Anyway. Left hand on the Bible for all its worth, not an anti. I do clown on idiots if they start it, but I do not condone actual harassment or genuine targeted bullying. I give what I get to a certain degree and that's all.

am i misunderstanding this? are they calling disagreements and arguments inherently harassment?
Pretty much. Its a troll account undoubtedly made after I corrected someone or clowned them for something they said. I've received a multitude of asks and reblogs from them today. Pretty pathetic but nothing I'm not used to, and it gives me the opportunity to have a pretty good laugh.
But for the general record: it was mostly a meme. Kpop has somehow made its way back onto my Instagram feed and I was reminded how unhinged the BTS fandom can get, especially if you actually engage with them.
I gotya! 😉
