You wondered if the universe hated you and had decided to fuck you over, or if you were just plain stupid.

Definitely the latter, you concluded as you watched the most horrifying scene you had ever witnessed unfold before your eyes.

You probably deserved everything coming your way for trusting Nishimura Riki earlier that day, but as a wise person had once said, even a girlboss has her weak moments.

And on the 25th of December, you were at your weakest.

Not only had your parents ditched you on Christmas to go on what they claimed was an urgent business trip but had also left without so much as a goodbye.

You’d woken up to a house as silent as the grave. For a moment, you’d thought you were sucked into the Home Alone universe, what with the way you were shouting their names like a child lost in a crowd and wondering why the fuck they weren’t answering you.

You’d called and called and called their phones, but each time, you’d received the same monotonous response: the number you are calling is not reachable.

The first two hours, you were in a state of absolute panic. You had no idea where your parents were and why they weren’t picking up their phones. There were no post-it notes stuck to the refrigerator, and their bed was already made.

Where the hell were they?

Third Person POV~

"I'm actually quite shocked. You're doing exceedingly well.. I got a few emails from coaches who watched our last game.. If you're serious about handball when season starts, you might get a scholarship." Your coach explains, and you're genuinely shocked. Sure you'd been training your ass off, but no one usually acknowledges it.

"Really?.. A scholarship where?" You ask as she smiles, amused at your excitement. "The states... Some school in Virginia."  She explains as your eyes widen. "The states!? My mom would never let me go to the states."

"She's not in control of you once you graduate.. You're good.. Don't let her hold you back.. Now, go home after school and rest up.. We have practice tomorrow after school."

You leave, and rather than going home, you head to your job. Working at some burger shack that everyone at your school came to. It wasn't too bad, but you hated being noticed.

And just to your dismay, these three cheerleaders, that love to make your life, hell walked in.

You just happened to be the only employee on the register so you had no choice but to take their orders.

And as you did so, begrudgingly, one of them spoke up. "Aren't you that loser from third period?.."

You sigh, avoiding her gaze as you finish finalizing their order. "That'll be $23.45.." You ignore her remark, simply wanting to finish the order. She scoffs though, arms crossing tightly across her chest. "Are you not gonna answer me?... Fucking loser."

She pays for the order before walking over to some random seat to wait around for it, and you let out a sigh of relief.

They've messed with you before, and you simply ignore it. It's better to take the shit than lose your job that you so desperately need, and worked hard to get.

You call the number for their order after a short while, giving them their drinks last as the tallest one of the girls scoffs. "This is the wrong drink." She then takes it out of the holder, throwing it at you, which results in you getting soaked in diet coke. It was, in fact, the right drink.

"What is wrong with you?" You try not to raise your voice, makeup and hair ruined, clothes soaked and sticking irritatingly against your skin, and she's just standing there with a smirk on her face. "You dumb bitch. Can't even get an order right." Just as you're about to retaliate, knowing that you didn't even make her order, someone grabs her wrist, tugging her away from the counter.

"That's enough.. Do you always go around giving people hell? At school, and now here..?" You glance up at the much taller figure gripping your offenders wrist, and you're slightly shocked at who it is.

It's the one boy that you've never heard speak in class, never seen him interact with other people despite his teammates on the basketball team. And yet he's popular.. Tall, handsome, and quiet. It's hard not to notice him.

When you finally snap back to reality, the three girls are storming out of the place and the boy is still standing in front of you, Nishimura Riki.

You've never imagined making eye contact with him, or speaking to him, but when his deep brown eyes meet yours, you immediately glance away, too flustered to continue looking him in the eyes.

He smiles gently, and there's a hint of pity in his eyes. "I'm sorry that happened.. Are you okay?..." His voice is slightly deep, and definitely nicely toned. You simply nod at his question, remembering that you're covered in soda.

"I'm fine.. I can take your order.." You try to deflect but he shakes his head. "No, let me take you home so you can change.. That can't be comfortable for you."

His voice is very persuasive, and you decide not to argue, telling him to wait before walking into the kitchen to talk to your manager.

"Mr. Rio...?" You inquire softly as the man glances up from his position at the grill, working on an order. "What happened?" He question, adjusting his glasses on the bridge of his nose.

"Some girl threw her drink at me...." Your explanation leaves him to nod understandingly. "Just go home.. I'll handle everything until I can call another person here."

You question whether he's sure or not before grabbing your stuff and rounding the counter. Riki grabs your stuff for you, carrying your book bag and your waterbottle as he gestures for you to follow him. You follow him towards his car and it's nice, a black mercedes. You're already regretting your decision to let him take you home.

"I can't get in your car like this.." You sigh as he shakes his head. "It's fine.. I'll clean of the seat afterwards.."

You refuse at his words. "No... I don't wanna cause you any trouble..." You argue as he rolls his eyes. "Fine then..." He get in the driver's seat, reaching into the duffle bag in the backseat as he pulls put a towel, putting it on the seat. "Come on. Now I won't even have to worry about cleaning the seat."

You sigh, still hesitant, but you still get into the car. He smiles once you're seated, leaning over the console to reach for your seatbelt, fastening it for you.

"So, where do you live..?"

The car ride to your house is excruciatingly silent. You're awkward, and he doesn't know how to speak to you. It's just terrible.

"This is my house.." You speak up quietly as he stops the car. "Well.. I guess I'll see you at school tomorrow?.." He asks as you nod, unfastening your seat belt and scrambling to get out of the car. "What was your name again?..." He asks as you sigh nervously. "I'm Y/n... L/n Y/n..." You answer as he nods. "Nice. I'm Nishimura Riki.."

And like an idiot, you respond, "I know..." Riki chuckles, smiling. "Then you'll know we have class together.. Don't forget to say hi."

He then drives off, leaving you on the pavement dumbfounded. After a few minutes, you shake it off, heading inside as you take off your shoes. Just to your luck, your mom is on her way out.

"What are you doing home?.." Your mom questions, brows furrowed inquisitively as she slid into her sneakers.

"Some girl threw a drink at me at work, so my boss let me go home..." You explain as she scoffs. "You're so weak... Your sister would've kept working.. Learn to endure."

And then she leaves, grabbing her keys before slamming the front door behind her. You hear the lock click shortly after, letting out a sigh of relief.

You hated being compared to your sister. She graduated with honors, and you're barely keeping A's and B's... She's just better... And your mom is no help, constantly comparing you to her. It's definitely not fair because your sister is far from perfect, but you try not to let it haunt you.

The first thing you do is shower, the icky feeling of the soda making your clothes cling to you uncomfortably. After showering, you wash the clothes to avoid the soda staining them permanently. Once all of that is handled, you're rummaging through the kitchen for something decent to eat. In the end, you're settling for pizza rolls and some instant ramen.

After eating the very random meal, you head upstairs to work on your homework, but to your luck, you left it in the cute boy's car.

Great, another assignment to fail. You think to yourself as you open your laptop, ready to email your teacher in hopes they'll be understanding. Just as you're about to hit send, a notification sounds on your phone, the screen illuminating with a text from an unknown number.

You open it, and to your luck its Riki.

[Hey, it's Riki. I found your backpack in the backseat... I would bring it back, but I'm busy tonight.. Is it okay if I give it back tomorrow?]

You sigh at the text, deciding to just forget the email and hope that homeroom gives you enough time to complete the homework.

[Yeah.. Tomorrow is fine... I need it during homeroom.]

[Great, I'll be there as soon as school starts.]

You thank him before setting your phone on the desk, sighing loudly. This day has been terrible, practice sucked, you got a drink thrown at you, and now your backpack is at some boy's house all because you accepted a ride home.

You just decide to push everything aside, getting in bed and watching random corny kdramas until you fall asleep.

It's rare that you ever get a good night's rest. If you hadn't left work early, you'd barely be home at 8pm... Luckily you got to sleep a little earlier, but just as quickly as you got lucky, you got unlucky.

You wake up to loud sounds coming from downstairs, and you're already aware of the familiar yelling voices.

You leave your room, heading quietly down the stairs as you hear your parents yelling, something about money and your dad being irresponsible.

You're used to the banter, and sometimes you just filter it out, but the sounds of broken glass was slightly alarming.

You peek into the kitchen, your parents are at each other's throats, and eventually your mom just yells for your dad to get out.

The man manages one last rude remark before leaving the house, the door slamming loudly behind him.

Just as your mom walks out of the kitchen, you try to ask if she's alright, she simply pushes past you, heading upstairs quietly.

Your sister still isn't home. God knows what she's out doing this time of night, but you're sure it isn't working.

Almost every last penny of your paycheck goes to your mom, and your sister's paycheck is never the same amount. You know for sure she's blowing it off selfishly, and your mom knows too, but she doesn't care.

One time you bought a new pair of shoes with your check since your family wasn't too far behind on bills, and boy you never heard the end of it. That's why you just give all the money you make to your mother.

And yet she still favorites your older sister. But you try your best to please her anyway. In the end you really don't have a way to impress her, unless you won the lottery maybe..

You genuinely just want a normal senior year, and at this point you'll do anything to get it.

Third Person POV~

"Hey, babe. Jungwon told me there's some party going on tonight at Jake and Heeseung's house.. Do you wanna go?" Riki plops down on the couch beside you, patting your back as you sigh. "No.. I dont wanna go.." You mumble as he pouts. "Why not~? I don't wanna go alone..."

"Riks, I really don't feel up to it.. I don't even have anything to wear.." You say as an excuse and Riki rolls his eyes. "I just took you shopping yesterday, come on.. If we can find you a good outfit you're going."

He pulls you up from the couch, dragging you towards the bedroom as you whine. "Riki... Why are you forcing me into this?" You ask as he sighs. "If you don't wanna go, I'm not gonna go because I wanna be with you.. But I'd much rather we both go have fun together.."

You roll your eyes at his reasoning, sitting on the bed while he rummages through your closet.

"Look, try this on.." He picks out a black halter top and some low rise jeans that you probably hadn't worn in the past year, you're already skeptical, but he forces you to try it on.

"I look ugly in the jeans. I need to lose weight before wearing these again." He scoffs loudly at your revelation. "Babe, I don't remember you ever even looking so good in these jeans, it's like you got better looking since we started dating."

You chuckle, turning away from your mirror to face him. "You're such a kiss ass, you're just saying that." He shakes his head at your words. "No, I'm not. You genuinely look good, but if you aren't comfy we'll find something you're okay wearing."

You can't help but smile at his willingness, and as soon as he forms another outfit, you try your hardest to try it on without any negative feelings.

The next outfit is simple, some cute jeans that are high waisted and flare at the bottom, and he gives you a dark blue tanktop that has thicker traps and a lace bordered neckline.

You can't deny that the outfit is much better. As you're glancing at yourself in the mirror, he comes up behind you, hands on your hips and his head on your shoulder. "You look so pretty.."

He moves your hair, trailing soft butterfly kisses over your exposed shoulder and your neck. "If you wanna wear this, I'll carry your coat for you.. Okay?.." You nod, deciding to give it a chance and go to the party.

The two of you get ready, outfits matching cutely, and just as you're both putting on your shoes, Riki raises an eyebrow. "You're not wearing the matching heels?" He asks as you shake your head, sliding into your white sneakers. "These are comfier... And I don't really wear heels anymore."

His face falls as he looks you in your eyes. It's like he can feel the confidence leaving you with every passing second. "Baby.. Are you still thinking about what that girl said?.. I don't care if you wear heels.. It's not like you're taller than me in them."

He had a point, you're only 5'10, and even in heels Riki still had a couple inches on you. "What if I was though?... Would you care?" You ask as he shakes his head. "Of course not.. If I cared that much about your height I'd be somewhere with a short girl right now.. I wanna be with you, I don't care about how tall you are.."

He takes a few steps closer, staring down at you as he kisses your forehead. "Plus, I don't have to break my spine to kiss you... Easier access." He smiles, giving you a soft kiss to your lips as you pull away giggling. "Okay.. okay, I get it.."

He smiles, tilting your chin upwards as he kisses you again. "Don't be so hard on yourself.. I love you, alright?" You nod, hands resting gently on his waist as you gazed into his eyes. "I love you too.."

Shortly after the small pep talk, you guys leave the house, you're not really paying attention to where Riki is driving, your sole focus on choosing what songs to play on the aux.

When the car stops, though, you're puzzled. "Where are we?..." You ask as Riki smiles. "I figured we should hang out by ourselves... You seem more comfortable when it's just us.."

You sigh, shaking your head. "But you wanted to go to the party.." You respond with a pout as Riki nods. "We'll go later.. You know Jake and Heeseung's parties go on all night.. We can be fashionably late."

You decide to go along with it, getting out of the car and following behind him. You didn't like drinking on an empty stomach anyway.

You walk inside the diner, hand tightly entertwined with Riki's as you wait to be seated. Another couple walks in, and you make eye contact with the woman, instantly regretting it, but smiling to hide your awkwardness.

"How tall are you?" She asks and you glance at her, stunned by the question. "Uhmm... I-" You struggle and she immediately apologizes. "Sorry, I was just curious.. Was that rude of me.."

"No, it's fine.." You lie, "I'm 5'10.." You respond as she gasps. "Wow, you're taller than my boyfriend..."

At her words, you glance at Riki, hoping she'll shut up. He only let's go of your hand, wrapping his arm around your waist instead and squeezing your hip.

"So, since you're tall I guess your boyfriend asks you to reach stuff instead?" She asks rudely and Riki shakes his head, gesturing for you not to reply and entertain her.

She scoffs when you ignore her. "Rude.. You think just because you're taller you can act like a bitch.. Excuse me for trying to spark conversation."

You're holding back tears as she degrades you, and Riki is fuming beside you, pushing you behind him as he glares at the couple. "Hey, man.. Learn to keep your chihuahua on her leash.." He spits as the other man scoffs. "Like we're afraid of you."

"Save the talk, shortstack. Make your girlfriend apologize for calling my girlfriend a bitch." He steps closer to the guy, slightly towering over him as the man's girlfriend rolls her eyes. "The world doesn't revolve around your girlfriend. If her feelings are hurt, she needs to get over it.."

Riki is about to say something else, but the waitress comes back over, saying that your table was ready.

He decides to let it go, gesturing for you to walk in front of him as you both walk towards your table. He whispers something to the waitress that you can't hear, but you're sure it was about the couple because shortly after, they're being asked to leave.

"You okay?.." He asks as you nod. "Thank you for defending me.." You say as he smiles. "Don't thank me.. I'll always defend my pretty girl... You're height only adds to your beauty.. That runt was only jealous because she has to wait for Mr. Loser to reach the top shelf." You laugh at his words, feeling comfortable again.

The next hour is spent with the two of you laughing together and making predictions as to what would be happening at the party when you both arrive later. You were sure they'd be playing truth or dare, but Riki just knew that beer pong had to be it.

When you finally got there though, you won because they were playing truth or drink. As soon as the two of you were spotted, Jake was quick to get up from his seat. "If it isn't my favorite couple! Come play!"

You both simply sat in the circle, knowing that it's impossible to refuse Jake when he asks you to play a game.

You greeted the other familiar faces you were used to, but for the most part you were quiet. Sometimes you simply preferred to watch Riki interact with his friends. The bright smile on his face was enough to keep you entertained.

After everyone greeted Riki, Jake was adamant that the game continue, so he tells Heeseung to spin the bottle.

You watch as it lands on Jay, and he sighs. "Can I get a normal question this time?" He asks with a laugh as Heeseung snickers. "Normal questions don't exist with Jaeyun."

Jake seems to be thinking hard for a minute before finally asking the question. "Have you and your girlfriend ever been caught in the middle of fucking?" He asks and Jay immediately sighs, glancing at his girlfriend who simply shrugs her shoulders.

"Yes. We got caught by Sunghoon." He answers as Sunghoon laughs from his seat across from Jay. "I was looking for the jacket you borrowed. It's not my fault you didn't lock the door."

You all laugh at the explanation, and then it's only a moment before Heeseung spins the bottle once more.

This time it lands on you. You're already nervous at what kind of question Jake will ask, but you decide to just let loose and answer if you can.

"What really happened that time you and Riki were locked in the bathroom at my last party?" He questions as you raise an eyebrow, glancing at Riki. "Nothing happened.."

Heeseung glances between the two of you, eyebrows raised. "Nothing happened? I find that hard to believe."

"No seriously. She got annoyed at someone, so I was calming her down. Nothing else happened." Riki explains as you nod. At the confession though, Jake grows more curious. "Annoyed at who?"

"I don't remember, I was drunk..." You shrug, "She was rude as fuck though.." You answer as Jungwon hums. "What did she say to you?" He asks as Riki sighs. "She started talking about her height in a disrespectful way. What did she say, babe?" Riki questions as you raise your brow in thought. "She said something along the lines of her and her boyfriend wanting a threesome so they could climb my tree. Some dumb shit like that. It was fucking annoying."

Sunoo chuckles at your words. "What the fuck kinda question is that. I would've swung on her ass." He says as Riki nods. "Trust me, she almost did."

You laugh at the memory, nodding in agreement with Riki's statement. Your smile quickly fades when some guy you're not familiar with speaks up. "Maybe you were the rude one.. It's seemed like a compliment. Maybe you should've hopped off your high ass horse and been nice about it."

Riki's smile is also transformed into a scowl as he looks at the guy. "Fuma. You're joking, right?" He asks as the brunette scoffs. "I mean. I'm not wrong. Your girlfriend thinks that she's untouchable just because she's a fucking giant."

At that, Riki is quick to rise from his chair, his tone challenging Fuma's. "You're just mad because my girl could stand on her tip toes and be taller than your sorry ass."

Fuma scoffs, mirroring Riki's standing position. "Yeah right. Everyone knows that shorter girls are better. The least your girlfriend could've done was have a nice body to make her height look less awkward." Before Fuma can even finish speaking, Riki attempts to launch at him. Sunghoon and Jay are quick to hold the younger male back though.

You're simply watching, fighting back tears. Heeseung observes your expression, and shields you, leading you into the kitchen. Once you're away from the drama, he sighs. "I'm sorry.. Fuma's drunk. I'm sure he didn't mean it."

You nod, inhaling deeply to keep yourself from crying and ruining your makeup.

Next, Jake is walking into the kitchen, an apologetic expression adorning his face. "I'm so sorry, Y/n... I shouldn't have asked the question... I didn't mean to start all this." His tone is filled with worry and you sniffle, taking his hands in yours. "Its not your fault, Jake... Don't apologize."

He kisses both of your hands, pulling you into a hug as he rubs your back. "Please don't be upset.." You pull away, patting his shoulder. "I'm not upset, it's fine..."

You glance towards the entry way as Sunghoon and Jay walk in, both having a tight grasp on Riki. They let him go once he finally calms down, and he immediately makes  bee-line towards you, replacing Jake in front of you.

The four of them then leave, giving you and Riki the space to talk. "Are you okay?.." He asks as you shake your head, finally letting yourself cry. "What did I do to him?... Why would he say those things about me..?" You ask as Riki sighs, pulling you against him as he kisses your head, his hand rubbing your back in, smooth, circular motions.

"Shh... It's okay... You're perfect.. He was just being an asshole." He presses multiple kisses to your temple, pulling back slightly to press a slightly longer kiss to your lips. "You know I don't like it when you cry.."

You nod, wiping your tears as Riki cups your face, his thumbs brushing over your cheeks. "You don't believe him do you?.." He asks as you shake your head, earning a soft smile and a kiss from Riki. "Good, because you're perfect.. Tall or short, big or small... I don't care what you look like because I love you.. Okay?"

You nod, fidgeting with his belt loops as hugs you again. "You love me too, right?" He questions as you nod eagerly, pulling back to look at him. "Of course.. I love you so much.." You reassure, giving him a kiss to affirm your words, and he smiles. "Now.. Let's go have some fun."

THE PREMONITION OF LOVE RIKI NISHIMURA

“I can’t believe I’m in trouble again because of you,” you fumed, harshly sweeping the broom across the hardwood floor of the classroom, minuscules of dust particles flying into the dustpan as Niki held it in place for you.

The rangy boy rotates his eyes at your dramatics, “Don’t blame me for your violent tendencies, you lowlife criminal.”

You halt your actions upon hearing his choice of words; the same insult you used against him a few weeks ago in this very room, since then the boy had been relentlessly teasing you throughout the days, eventually sending you into a fit of rage, causing you to hurl a newly sharpened pencil his way, but of course, the agile troublemaker was able to swiftly dodge your attack, ultimately leading to the yellow-coated stick of graphite to strike another student.

You weren’t sure of Niki’s reason for being here but due to his reputation of being a devil-child, you weren’t surprised to see him serving after-school detention.

Your eye twitched in irritation at his smug expression, clearly proud of himself for always being able to get a reaction out of you, he seemed to find solace in getting under your skin.

You kiss your teeth in annoyance before going back to cleaning just as the principal had ordered, “Whatever. Let’s just get through this detention and never speak to each other again.”

Niki smirks at your proposition, finding it bodacious how you habitually attempted to boss him around despite his notorious reputation for being formidable, it’s what made you incontrovertibly interesting, why he was so drawn to you despite the fact you were two worlds apart.

He knows he shouldn’t, people like you and him don’t associate with each other, but he can’t help himself, it’s as though a cosmic force lives inside you and it’s pulling him in against his will—albeit he doesn’t particularly find himself resisting in the first place.

“No thanks, I’m good,” he simpered, looking pleased with himself.

His artificial smile leaves you breathing fire as you drop the broomstick with a huff, narrowed eyes glowing with malevolence, “And why not?”

“Hmm…” Niki furrows his eyebrows comically, eyes darting around the room while pursing his lips, pretending to ponder your question before responding, “Because I don’t want to.”

“Besides you should be glad I’m here to help, Miss President,” he continues, “this is a pretty big classroom. How is your little self supposed to take on this big mess all by yourself?”

“And what about these desks?” He walks over to one of the desks, gliding his slender fingers over the wooden surface before gripping the sides. “Won’t you need a big strong man to carry them for you?” He continues his condescending act with a sneer.

In one swift movement, the bottom of your shoe meets the edge of the desk in a vigorous kick, the piece of furniture slamming into his knees, causing the boy to hunch over in pain, hands rubbing them to soothe the twinge.

“Don’t patronize me, Nishimura,” you seethe.

He glares at you in return, regaining his composure. “Do you always have to be so stuck up?”

“Watch your mouth.”

“You first,” he shoots back.

The animosity in the room thickens with each passing second you and Niki shoot daggers into each other's eyes, neither of you willing to let up.

Until you hear a faint click of the door, a sudden sense of impending doom settles in your gut, and Niki seems to share the same intuition as your eyes widen, both of you frantically rushing towards the door.

You reach for the knob and it’s just as you dreaded; it’s jammed, the elderly janitor on the other side is oblivious to the muffled banging and shouting behind the door, happily whistling along to “Secret Garden” by IU as he continues to prance his way down the halls.

“Hey! We’re still in here!”

“Open the fucking door, you prick!”

As unlikely as it seemed—maybe not that unlikely, it was you who made the latter statement causing Niki to raise an eyebrow at you with a tilt of his head, “I thought I was supposed to be the bad one here.”

“Shut up, Nishimura,” you grumble, kicking his shin, but Niki won't take that from you a second time.

He takes advantage of his strength to grab your wrists, pinning them against the wall on either side of your head, and even in his angry outburst he reminds himself he's still a man, careful not to use his full vigor on you, after all his goal wasn't to scare you, but to assert his dominance.

“Are you done?” he interrogates, his usual mischievous and playful aura now replaced with sternness.

You attempt to break free from his restricting hands before giving in to the thought of having to answer to him but it was of no avail, his grasp like iron.

“Answer me,” he demands, jaw clenching at your silence.

You roll your eyes still not meeting his harsh gaze, “Yes, now can you let me go?”

Niki might have granted your wish had you asked politely, but it was clear he wasn't satisfied with your tone of voice, his hold on your wrists staying firm, and he decided to command something he knew you'd hate, “Say please.”

You scoff as you finally meet his eyes, opening your mouth to retort but the grim expression on his face makes you decide otherwise, You swallow your pride and it feels like acid down your throat, “Please.”

And just like that, he’s back to his usual abysmal self, a smug smirk plastered on his peachy-pink lips whilst he realises you, petting your head as a form of damage control which surprisingly seemed to work because you make no move to swat his hand away, although you still curse him under your breath.

Almost an hour passed with occasional bickering from you and Niki as you continued cleaning the classroom followed by small gaps of comfortable silence until you finally completed the task, allowing yourselves to rest.

You don’t comment on the fact he chooses to sit right behind you once again, assuming he’s only doing it to annoy you.

“I wonder what time it is, it looks like it’s getting kinda late.” You say, gazing out the window at the dusk sky, the sun beginning to set below the horizon painting the vast atmosphere in a calming blue fading into a deep golden decorated with white clouds.

“Just go to sleep, they’ll find us in the morning,” he remarks, before using his forearms as a cushion for putting his head down on the desk.

You nod in agreement, chin resting in the palm of your hand, eyelids heavy as you feel yourself drifting off into dreamland.

Wait.

Your eyes widen in realization, quickly whipping around to face the sleeping boy, roughly grabbing onto his arm and jolting him awake, “It’s Friday!”

The irritated scowl on his face dissipates at your initial action when he registers your words, his expression now mocking your own, “Oh shit.”

You cross your arms over your chest, tapping a foot impatiently, “Geez, Nishimura. What happened to your tough-guy act earlier? You can’t even open a goddam window.”

For the past ten minutes, the poor boy had been struggling to open the classroom window and your nagging certainly wasn’t helping his frustrated state, he ceased his movements with a heavy sigh, eyeing you from his peripheral vision, “Should we use your head instead? I bet it’s as hard as a rock, we could bust this thing open in no time,” he responds, tapping the knuckle of his middle finger against the cold glass.

You refrain from smacking the back of his head, “Just get out of my way, you imbecile.” You retort, shoving him backward with your shoulder as you step forward, upon further inspection of the framed translucent aperture you find an aluminum screw lock, with a roll of your eyes you twist it, removing the small object from the tracks and opening the window.

You turn back to the boy standing behind you, knee slightly bent as a hand rests on your hip, a proud smirk donning your lips, “Shouldn't you show me a little gratitude, Nishimura?”

Niki remained poker-faced, grumbling out a “Thanks” and stepped onto the window sill in a crouched position, jumping off in a fleet-footed method.

“Holy shit,” you lean your upper body out the window, palms resting on the sill, checking if the gremlin was still alive after his reckless act.

You breathed a sigh of relief at the sight of him staring up at the window, “What are you? An old lady? Hurry up.”

You zeroed in on the height with a thick gulp, a sensation of vertigo beginning to linger and it only grows more intense the longer you look down, “It's fine, don't wait for me.”

Niki sighed and gestured up at the pale moon contrasting the navy blue sky, “It's dark out. I can't let you walk home by yourself, it's not safe.”

If it wasn't for your loss of equilibrium, you might have been appreciative of his solicitude, howbeit in this predicament you can't seem to focus on anything else.

He stays silent for a moment, taking in your expression, and then it dawns on him, you have a fear of heights.

Instead of teasing you like you fully expected he would, he opts for a more sympathetic approach, “Just look at me, ok? Don't focus on what’s scaring you.”

You scoff, “I'm not scared, what the hell are you talking about? I'm just waiting for you to move out of my way.”

The boy sighs in vexation at your stubbornness, doing his best to maintain his benevolent tactic, “I’ll catch you, just jump and I'll handle the rest.”

You bite at your bottom lip, an obvious sign of your timorous feelings, and Niki implores you further, “Look, I know we aren't exactly the nicest to each other but that doesn't mean I'm out to hurt you.”

Your eyes surveyed him, having an internal battle with yourself about whether you should have faith in the brown-haired boy or not.

“It's ok, you can trust me,” he coaxed.

“Fine.” You huff, stepping on the window sill in a crouched position. “Just don't look under my skirt.”

Niki only responds with a shrug which slightly concerns you but you decide to ignore it for the time being, you take a deep breath, scanning the distance between you and the ground once more.

“Hey, what'd I say?” He reminds you gently, “only look at me.”

And you do, forcing your eyes away from the patterned concrete and only keeping your sights on him, you let yourself fall, your body feeling weightless in mid-air as you wait for his arms to catch you, and they do.

His arms circle tightly around your midriff, and your arms wrap around his neck in return, the tips of your shoes just barely hovering above the ground, his foot slightly lifting causing him to stumble backward a bit but thankfully he's able to balance himself, adrenaline coursing through both your veins as you let out chuckles of relief, gaping at each other.

Your breathing evens after a couple of seconds but Niki still hasn't let you out of his embrace, the novelty of the situation creating a stark contrast to your usual deep-seated aversion towards each other with the way your gazes soften subsequent to your eyes locking.

He'd never looked at you like this before and you aforementioned him, this tension was different, even from the tensity a few weeks ago when you landed right on top of him, you fixated on the windows to his soul, their deep brown seemed more balmy now, like a cool summer night when the weather wasn't too hot and not too cold, just pleasantly warm.

You suddenly thought of a phrase your grandmother would often say, mostly when talking about how she met your grandfather; koi no yokan.

“What’s that?” your eight-year-old self asked, eyes gleaming in curiosity.

Her lips curl in a tender smile, “It's the premonition of love. You'll feel it one day when you meet your soulmate, you won't love them right away but something in your heart will tell you that’s the person you're supposed to love for the rest of your life.”

You snap out of your reverie when Niki sets you down, patting your shoulder, “Next time I'll have to push you out.”

You roughly place your hand on his shoulder as a counter, “I’ll take you down with me, Nishimura.”

He chuckles and ruffles your hair, “Whatever, nerd. Let's go, I still gotta get you home safe.”

“And I gotta make sure you can read the street signs,” you quip as you begin walking alongside him.

Niki gives you a light shove on the shoulder which you return, and he shoves you again only this time the pad of his index finger meets your forehead causing you to nearly fall over but he's quick to clutch your upper arm, ceasing your fall, and you both laugh.

Even so, you can't help but psychologize your peculiar relationship with the boy, Riki Nishimura was the most beautiful, complicated thing. He was the genesis of your ire and ataraxy, he made you laugh when you didn’t want to, and he made you emotional even though you were well-known for your stoicism, you wanted to punch him and at the same time you wanted to understand him, you hated being around him but your heart skipped a beat whenever he got too close, he was your paradox.

Riki Nishimura was your koi no yokan and as he walked you home that night, you were both blissfully unaware of the Red thread of fate that interweaved your souls together for an eternity, tied around your pinkies in adamantine knots.

MIDNIGHT KISSES RIKI NISHIMURA

“Let me guess, I should ‘see the other guy’?” you quip in a low voice, disappointment laced in your tone as you gently dab at the cut above your best friend's eyebrow with a gauze pad soaked in saline solution.

Riki lets out a quiet laugh, “Yeah, something like that. Just know I kicked his ass.”

You don't laugh with him, you didn't like it when Riki talked like that, despite what people said about him he wasn't some reckless delinquent who acted out because he wanted to look cool.

Riki had his reasons why he did the things he did, you understood that better than anyone being as close to him as you were, but it didn't mean you would co-sign his behavior either.

You knew you couldn't stop him though, that's just the way he was, always fighting for what’s right even if it got him in trouble in the end, even so, you suppose that's what you loved about him the most, his instinct to protect.

He made you feel safe and you surmise he felt the same with you seeing as how he crawled through your bedroom window on nights he sustained injuries and sought out solace in your delicate touch treating his wounds.

You don't miss the small flash of anger in his eyes and the slight clench of his jaw and fist at the mention of the fight, you pause your movements, “He said something about me didn't he?”

The blue glow in your room from your projector casts a subtle gleam in his deep brown eyes and you swear they look like stars, in that moment if any man were to promise you all the incandescent spheres in the night sky, you would tell him there’s no need because you'd already found them in Riki’s eyes.

He doesn't answer your question, which tells you the other boy did indeed make an inappropriate comment about you, and he’s glad the music playing lowly on his phone fills the silence.

Riki sighs, resting his head against the side of your mattress from his sitting position on the floor as you toss the blood-stained gauze into the mini trashcan and grab a new one, he watches intently while you soak it in saline, and begin to bring it to the bridge of his nose.

His long fingers curl around your wrist in a gentle grasp, stopping you mid-way, his eyes never once leaving your face, with his free hand he tucks your hair behind your ear before cupping your cheek, his thumb caressing the apple of it, “Let me kiss you.”

His deep voice speaks in a desire-filled whisper and you find yourself leaning into his touch, your lips grazing the inside of his wrist, “Riki,” you say softly, but no other words follow.

His grip becomes slightly tighter as he slides his fingers into your hair, slowly tugging you closer by your nape, “Please.”

You don't know what to say, a part of you finally wants to give in to Riki after spending so many years running away from this, and another part wants to turn away and deny you are in love with the boy.

You were both still in high school and the chances of your love being real were low, resulting in you adopting a habit of undermining not only yours but also Riki’s feelings.

But no matter how many times you pushed him away Riki cared for you still and forever will, always telling you that was his part of the deal.

Each day of the years you had spent with him he was nothing short of kind-hearted toward you and you know that must've made you someone very special in Riki’s books.

“Ok,” you breathe out as you lean in closer until your lips connect in a sweet kiss, the taste of his strawberry chapstick seeping into your mouth while your lips move in sync.

His bruised hand holding your nape tugs your hair lightly to pull you away from his plump lips before letting go of your wrist he still held and your soft strands.

He grabs you by the waist, hauling you over him like you weigh nothing so you're straddling his legs eliciting a gasp from you, your hands falling on his shoulders to balance yourself.

“Riki, I still have to clean-” you speak in a hushed tone slightly out of breath, your heart beating erratically.

“Shut up,” he cuts through your words in a quick whisper, cupping both your cheeks and practically yanking you down into a kiss once more, this time with more fervor.

The heat of your mouth on his warms his cold body from his venture to your house on a frigid December night, and in spite of the throbbing pain in his hands and face Riki wouldn’t change a damn thing.
