being in your 20s like...
our time together is just never quite enough..
IKR??!! O.o
# am i not always the chandler in every situation?
One of the shows best moments. x'D
What do you think: was it third down or second down?
I need to know this.
In sitcoms, why is it that when a character has a child from a past relationship and starts dating someone else, they always have a new kid that replaces them?
In friends, Ross had Ben but then he had a kid with Rachel and Ben is literally never in the show again? Even after Ben and Rachel met and got along. After Emma is born Ross just doesn't care about his son?
And in once upon a time, Robin has Roland but the writers decided to give him a kid with Zelena and obviously that's an interesting storyline but like Roland doesn't even get mentioned again? Zelena didn't want Robin to be a co-parent at all but he and Regina just bullied her into giving him the baby (I have many opinions on that storyline)
I’ve always loved friends, I grew up with it, and it’s the main reason I have an american accent when I speak (I’m european). But in the last couple of years, I have also noticed the things you mention above. The show is iconic, but does NOT age well. So I agree with your statement. And will add that while I do like Chandler, he is also pretty whiny and homophobic unfortunately. He even states several times that he had the worst childhood of them all, when Phoebe is clearly the one who’s bedn through most. She’s just handling it, and don’t blame her current problems on her parents, like Chandler does. I love Phoebe. Her and Joey were the best, hands down.
Ok, so I decided that if I needed to have something playing in the background while I was taking pills to make me sick so I can get better (short version: nuclear antibiotics for a cyst that looks like but isn’t breast cancer) I would make it “Friends.” I used to watch this show when it was on and I was very young and then I also caught it in reruns through maybe S4? Anyway, the point is that I remembered liking it.
And…I like certain aspects of it. Mostly, the writing is better than I remember. I’m in S1 and I think I was mostly recalling later seasons where certain jokes had calcified (”could this BE more predictable?”). But also the actors are extremely talented, especially the women. I mean, Lisa Kudrow is playing in a different league than all of them so it’s not fair to compare them to her. But honestly they’re all better than I thought (except David Schwimmer who radiates such dislikable energy always) and Matt LeBlanc gives me very “early Dean Winchester” vibes.
BUT OH MY GOD IT IS HOMOPHOBIC AS FUCK!!! Like, maybe it improves, but throughout the first season it’s supposed to be baseline hilarious when someone is gay. Like, the punchline that Ross’s ex is with a woman now is the entire joke in pretty much the entire episode. And we’re supposed to FEEL SORRY FOR HIM?? NO FUCKING WAY!! ROSS IS THE WORST EVER!!!
Oh yeah, that’s the other thing I realized. I always hated Ross but he’s actually the worst. Ever. I have reblogged longer, better posts about this, so I won’t go into it in detail, but FUCK THAT FUCKING SELF-PITYING HOMOPHOBIC DOUCHEBAG!!!
Anyway, everyone (except Phoebe) is too mean to Rachel, who’s doing a really hard thing in living on her own for the first time ever and doing all kinds of things that would be terrifying. Ross deserves nothing but horrific loneliness forever. It also shouldn’t be such a huge joke that Monica was once fat - stop being so fatphobic you ridiculous diet nazis! You’re all too thin! Joey is the sweetest and cutest of them all. Phoebe is better than everyone. And I will continue to tolerate Chandler because, eh, he’s harmless.
Anyone else on here have Friends thoughts they want to share? I’m very interested in how things do (or do not) translate or age well.
You know that episode of Friends where Ross tries to move a couch to his apartment with Rachel and Chandler but they get stuck while going up the stairs? Ross yells, "PIVOT" and Chandler says some witty, sarcastic quip. Believe it or not, that episode has a lot to do with my current situation.

“Oh, I’ve gotten into the habit of calling Rachel “Mommy” when we’re around Emma. Which I now realize we are not…”
