The first graders start the year off by learning how to roll a ball of yarn. Then they begin to finger knit. My seventh graders are needle felting the set and puppets for a play they'll perform for the 2nd graders. Last year they sewed marionettes. The second graders learn to knit. The fifth graders learn to weave a holder for their recorder. The third graders have priority of the culinary kitchen because they are learning to measure, but the other grades use the kitchen fairly regularly, too. The garden teacher's goal is for every student to be able to create and grow their own garden by the time they graduate 8th grade. The kindergartners get to play.

home ec should be REQUIRED from THE EARLIEST GRADES and I don’t know why schools don’t already do this when there are so many opportunities for synergy, scaffolding to multiple ability levels, and connecting school and home skills
Kindergarteners should be learning to make icebox cake and then writing their own recipes. First graders can learn to wind balls of yarn and make different knots, and sew basic seams with felt and bulky thread. By second grade students can read simple recipes and measure out ingredients, and begin to learn basic embroidery stitches, and to spin yarn on drop spindles (really good for learning directions and clockwise/counterclockwise). Recipes and sewing allow you to do basic math and learn shapes more complexly. By third grade students can begin to knit and crochet. More complex and specialized hand crafts can be introduced in middle and high school.
All of it improves fine motor skills and the plasticity of the brain. No student should leave school unable to cook for themselves or mend their sock. My parents were busy making sure I stayed alive from one day to the next. I had music lessons and knitting lessons after school, but I didn’t do well at them, because I WAS ALSO BUSY MANAGING MY ENERGY.
And if I was provided the consistency of a space to learn knitting in school like the band kids had music, just to pick a fiber craft and PRACTICE for a half hour every day, at the same time, with other kids who are also doing the same thing, would have been so helpful in both providing me a physical activity I felt like I COULD possibly do despite my disability, and the space to make mistakes and learn together, and make weird fabrics. It would have been so fun, and I don’t know why more schools don’t do it.
Fiber craft circles are popular with adults for a reason! You get to make fabric and complain about life drama while everyone mutters soothingly in the background! Do you think 8 year old Alexia-Kate doesn’t want to knit a blanket square and spill tea about how Henry pushed her on the playground and knocked the wind out of her??? Children are little gossip machines that are obsessed with repetitive actions, of COURSE THEY DO.
