The Angel of Mercy

It has been a decade or more since the last death, but we remember it. Here in the Commons, you remember what came before.

No one thought much of it at first. Children die, don’t they? Down here, where we don’t have the coin for the nobility’s expensive physicians, where the priests only come to spread the word of the Six, children die. It takes a certain kind of resilience to survive at the street level, and not all children have it.

A child found dead behind an apple cart. The Seraph called it an accidental death and said the boy had choked on a bite of the apple they assumed he’d stolen.

I know better. He was a good boy, that Cal. Always said he’d get his mother and sister a house on Manor Hill by working hard. They both moved in with the mother’s brother. Last I heard, the sister’s been seen around the Pale Empress.

I always figured her for the easy sort.

Then it wasn’t just one boy.

…and everyone knew it wasn’t a string of accidents.

How could anyone look at the bruises? At those terrified, bulging eyes and think that this was just a mishap? Plain carelessness is my thinking. The Seraph didn’t give a rat’s ass about what happened to a bunch of street rats.

Rats. Trash. Refuse. I heard what they called us.

Didn’t they realize that the children were the good ones? That they were the pure souls the priests used to mention? I remember one. Priestess of Dwayna. She talked to a group of children about how the goddess loved them, how her wings would enfold them if they died like Cal and there would never be any fear.

Toffee apples whenever they wanted. The kind of thing children always want to hear.

No one much liked the priest of Grenth that came, but he had a point. The Prince of Ice isn’t cruel. He isn’t vindictive. When you die, that’s it. You’re just his, and he takes care of his own. Who’d complain about being taken care of? Between him and Dwayna, it sounded like a pretty good deal.

I would’ve done it anyway. I mean… I remember how my sister kicked when I held her head under the fountain’s water, but she didn’t know better. She was little, just a baby. She didn’t know I was saving her. Our father never touched her like he did me. I saved her from that. I gave her those toffee apples forever. She never spent a night cold or hungry once I sent her to the gods.

Cal didn’t suffer either. All those men his mother would let into the house. They’d throw him out, call him names. He said he was going to save his mother and sister from living like that, but you can’t save people who don’t want to be saved.

He wanted to be saved.

All of them wanted to be saved. So I saved them. One at a time.

There aren’t many good children around anymore. Parents beat it out of them early, make them lie, cheat and steal. I can’t get to them soon enough to save them before they’ve turned into just another bit of scum.

It’s been years now. I’m almost too big to get through the cellar windows anymore, but I’ll keep trying as long as I can. Ellie was talking about the kittens she saved from drowning this morning, and I know where her room is.

I’ll save you, Ellie.
