WELCOME TO STOAT SATURDAY
stoats/ermines look like a cold bad bitches change my mind
Heya guys, I finally made myself a brand spankin new OC!! His name is Zipp and he's Wispy's beach bum surfer dude cousin who lives in a small trailer on the beach that's an hour away from Bright Light City!
(more info down below)
Cousin of Wispy Brighton, Zipp Brighton is a well known local beach bum and surfer dude who lives right in a very small trailer home that is parked right on the edge of Citrus Beach, a very popular beach with a vacation town that's located an hour outside of Bright Light City
He and Wispy were born a year apart from one another and they have a very strong brother-like bond with each other that's been there ever since childhood, they both LOVE to party hard, chill out with bongs in their hands, and eat ungodly amounts of food until they both pass out together!
Zipp frequently hangs out at The Punch Bowl, a very popular tiki bar that is set in the middle of the beach that is owned by Jungle Juice, half of the time drinking until he's on the verge of getting cut off (and eating their food). The half being spent on flirting and ""laying his charm"" on pretty much all the patrons of the bar that he finds attractive
Zipp is also infamous for never being seen wearing any shirt of any kind whatsoever (except for tank tops on rare occasions) and if asked to by any establishment, he will outright refuse!
He is a very accomplished surfer in his area and has won at least the top three places at least over a dozen times in his time being in surfing competitions. He also loves swimming, volleyball, jet skiing, and boogie boarding
He visits his cousin Wispy in Bright Light City every three months or so just to have fun and catch up with each other in general. Wispy goes over to Citrus Beach every summer to visit Zipp and as a sort of "summer vacation" for himself. They both write each other letters and text each other on the phone basically everyday!
-----------------------------------------------------
Notes:
His two favorite fruits + flavors in general are lemon and lime
He had learned how to swim at the age of 2 since his parents would constantly have him swimming around in some body of water since they all grew up in a swamp (yes, Zipp and his family swam in a swamp)
He smells of tequila, sea salt, bog water, and weed
He used to have a belly button ring, but it got torn off because he thought it was a good idea to attach himself to a boat with a rope tied to his belly button ring so he could jet ski that way. It didn't end well
He does have a crush on Emmett and every time he visits Wispy, he's always trying to get "closer" to Emmett by any means possible. Wispy is amused by it and lowkey would like to see them get together lol
He absolutely HATES winter and cold weather, it means no fun for him (plus he hates freezing his ass off)

#ShortTailedWeasel
Ermine, Stoat or Short-tailed Weasel (Mustela erminea) in its winter coat...
She's the one who has been having fun stealing Jack's (The Raven) meat, for a long time. I've been trying to capture her for about 3 years on my camera and finaly succeeded last Thurday during the snow storm when power was down.
I'm very proud⦠she's an adorable one.
Finally updated my fucking references for them
Their design is half stoat, half maine coon. Stoat because Stowe, and maine coon to exentuate the fur differences between the two.
Aarons fur is cut as is standard, while alex grows it out. This is carried over in how their fur is shaped, which makes it. uh. cool
im not completely proud of this, but its much better than the rushed sheet i had before.
BOO, Unwanteds jumpscare!!! I draw these stupid anthro designs a LOT but I usually don't post them (because it's usually just one of the twins sitting there).
If you're unfamiliar, I have anthroified the characters to make them easier and more fun for me to draw, and I try to base the characters on animal species that make sense. The Stowes are all Stoats, for obvious reasons, mixed with Maine Coon. (it mentions Alex's hair grows out a lot, so what better than the furriest cat breed?)
Threw this together the moment I saw that Star Trek clip. beautiful.
I decided to make the Pirates (or at least some of them) pigmented coyotes, since my Lani design is a black wolf.
I wish people in the book acknowledged how big of an influence Justine was on him :( Like not only is he in a cult, the cult leader also personally trained him and considered him for a successor (she and her brother are pallas cats, btw!)
A Sadness Runs Through Him (them) storyboard. Its rough an only like. 11 panels. but.
I love the chapters where he just does not want to be a dad. His friends are like 'heyy Alex um. we have these babies of yours, uh, what do we do with them??" and he goes "I gotta go to the bathroom for 2 hours brb"
The Adults Are Talking is certainly a song
stupid memes
Character sketches (Sky, Crow, Mr Today & Justine, Rattrap.) I don't have a species for them yet, except that they're based on corvids (and sky's mixed with a bluebird)
Ava, barbarian, mother, crone.
I finished watching episode 8 of burrows end today. It was a lot. Avaβs strength and tenacity are admirable, but I never want to be that cold, especially to my family.
Say your βIβm sorryβs and βI love youβs, they are so important, to you an others.
For what its worth, I listened to the episode in question, and I just assumed it was another one of those weird things that kept coming up in bestiary descriptions (animals ressurecting each other comes up almost as much as animals hating on snakes... this is all religious stuff, isn't it...).
I was also half convinced that this was going to be a cat (as an aside, if we ever do get a cat entry, I'm going to have to post a picture of my kitty πββ¬ ).
I feel like @wingedtyger might have something with their suggestion that ferrets or polecats might be the 'house' hreksong (when I was about 6 years old, my neighbour kept ferrets π ), though humans do like to try keeping pretty much anything as pets, and hreksongs are pretty cute and awesome (as well as being fearsome predators - stoats and weasels often take down prey far larger then them!)
Bestiaryposting Results -- Hreksong
Slightly awkward timing on this one: the animal in question happened to come up on a recent episode of our podcast (We literally quoted a line from the Bodley MS 764 entry, because it was relevant to the story we were reading). So any of the artists who listen may have gotten spoilers. (I say "may", but I've already seen one art post that references the episode.) Sorry about that, artists. Kind of a bizarre coincidence, actually -- it's pretty rare that we happen across bestiary material in a narrative text, and the fact that we did so shortly before the relevant entry came up in the rotation... well, the odds are against it.
Anyway, anyone who doesn't know what this is about should check out https://maniculum.tumblr.com/bestiaryposting. You can also check the "maniculum bestiaryposting" tag to see what beast is the current prompt. The entry for this week's drawings can be found here:
Art below the cut, roughly chronological, as always.
@silverhart-makes-art (link to post here) decided that the best interpretation of the information given was that this was a sort of arboreal mongoose that practiced mouthbrooding. If you want to know what the reasoning was there, you should read the linked post -- it all makes sense there. I absolutely love that the one in the picture is opening its mouth to show the baby riding inside. Silverhart indicates that this is a quicker sketch than usual, but frankly their animal-drawing skills are so good that even a quick sketch is impressive from my perspective.
@cheapsweets (link to post here) did separate drawings for the large outdoor version (upper image, carrying its young) and the small indoor version (lower image, stealing someone's food). The linked post, which explains the design in some detail, indicates that CheapSweets was thinking along similar lines as Silverhart -- i.e., what kind of animal is known for hunting snakes? I like the pose in the first image, and I really like the scene depicted in the second one. On one hand, I'm sure having little creatures live in your roof and steal food literally out of your hands is quite frustrating, but on the other hand, it's very funny. Look at that little guy just brazenly stealing some chicken (or whatever type of bird). The idea of them using their back legs to grip rafters for exactly this purpose is excellent.
@strixcattus (link to post here) decided these could be birds, and has drawn these owl-like creatures for us. They look a bit surly, but that could just be the feather pattern on their faces. As always, I strongly recommend checking out that linked post, as Strixcattus writes brilliant interpretations of these entries in the register of a modern naturalist to accompany the illustrations.
@pomrania (link to post here) has noted that cats live in houses and eat mice, and given us this charming domestic scene. They also note the issues with this interpretation in the linked post, which of course you should read. I think the poses of the cats are very well done here; one of those kittens looks like it wants to paw at the monk's belt but can very much not reach.
And now for the Aberdeen Bestiary:
I'm not sure about the head proportions -- I'd suggest that the flattened snout is because the artist ran out of space, if it weren't for the fact that they were fine letting the back foot extend into the border -- but that is recognizably a weasel.
A few things to note from this:
1. Medieval people apparently had not only mice in their homes, but weasels, which I'd never really thought about. I'm not sure what the distinction they're drawing between the type you find in your home and the type you find in the woods is about, though.
2. The weasel's healing magic crops up in multiple texts, including the Lais of Marie de France and Volsungasaga. It's less common than you might think to find overlap between bestiary-weirdness and narrative-weirdness, so that's pretty notable.
3. I have no friggin' idea why anyone thought they gave birth through their ears. Baffling.
I love my son he is miserable. Reference sheet of Wraith, my post-apocalyptic stoat lad!
