Not recognizing the identity of who he was talking to, Subyss pulled away from the mare’s teeth. Now his best coat was ruined! A flush of fustration burned his cheeks, but he took deep breaths. He needed his fix. He needed it. 

He then bowed. “Wonderful day, is it? By the way, do you know any well-bred youth in need of a firm, loving rod? I promise to make it cheap.” said the ex-torturer, casually. Subyss almost said “délicatesse”, but he managed to remind himself that “délicatesse” in the context of flogging was part of his cast’s jargon, not someone that a person of noble birth would even allow to get anywhere close to their children. He said this, having no idea to whom he talked. He thought he might be some lower courtier. 

“I’ll even do a demonstration, if you want. I have my little birch rod in my pocket.”

(pockets at this time where rather large).

The brightness of the sun-light was hurting his eyes, and he so wanted to head back underground. The torturer hoped he would at least get some useful information out of it. 

The weather is cold out, but the warmth of Heaven blazes forth in the form of a warm snout under Louis Auguste’s hand, bristling soft. The mare’s eyes are bright and soulful, batting thick lashes as she looks up at him; Louis Auguste’s fingers card through the warm mane, the soft of her neck. The holster around her head gleams in the light, clean. The stableboy stands there, saying nothing. There is a bruise flowering on his lower arm; barely covered by sweat and dust. ‘’Thank you,’’ he says to him, though he does not really know why. His breath comes out as fog.

The day had been long for Subyss. He had purchased and made several pillory signs and was now ready for bed when he heard someone knocking at the door of his cell-converted to apartment. 

The torturer continued to walk...”Can I have your name, mam?” he asked, in a cheery tone that contrasted with his cruel nature, as he carried in his hands an entire pile of blank pillory signs. 

“Any news of Jean-Baptiste’s lovely little brother?” he continued. 

"Long time no see" murmured Subyss, quite bewildered at the sight of the silver-haired woman so close to his cell-converted-to-apartment.

"I am uncertain to call it a pleasure to see you again, but likewise."

The smell of blood still clings as his perfume, the ivory of grinded bones still a pouder 'pon his cheek. Her nose shall never ignore his profession, nor the indulgence writ upon his cheeks whence his hands rent a lowly criminal in twain.

A countess? Fear crossed the torturer’s eyes, until he remembered he wasn’t actually marked with infamy. He bowed lowly, accidentally dropping one of his pillory signs he quickly picked up. 

“My apologies, milady.” he said, in a whiny tone. 

So, Nicolas-Gabriel was still in the monastery he entered bloody illegally. 

"Long time no see" murmured Subyss, quite bewildered at the sight of the silver-haired woman so close to his cell-converted-to-apartment.

"I am uncertain to call it a pleasure to see you again, but likewise."

The smell of blood still clings as his perfume, the ivory of grinded bones still a pouder 'pon his cheek. Her nose shall never ignore his profession, nor the indulgence writ upon his cheeks whence his hands rent a lowly criminal in twain.

Subyss saw as the woman completely changed her facial expression to a more dominant, no majestic one. Would she be a man, this probably would be the moment he would try flirting, but to a woman, he wasn’t interesting, and it wasn’t like she was one of his “patients”. 

At her order, he stood. “Yes, milady.” he murmured. 

She was surrounded by a delicious darkness that lured him in like a moth to flame. 

“So, please tell me, are you lost...A noble lady of your rank surely would not pay visit to a mere torturer such as I?” he asked politely, his voice no longer whiny nor theatrical.

Age: (headcanon based on clues) 38 to 58...However, he would be closer to 35 for interactions set during the first volume. 

Hair color: Black

Eye color: (headcanon) Dark cherry (if Charles can have occasionally grey-purple eyes and complexion on some covers, than surely Subyss can have dark cherry eyes)

Complexion: (headcanon)Very pale and ashy with dark circles having brown and red tones. 

Tattoos: One on his cheek, that he would occasionally touch up with ink-based makeup to keep the edges sharp. I also imagine he would have a hedgehog tattoo on his back and a cross right where his heart is. 

Personality: Subyss is not mentally healthy nor moral to say the least. He’s someone devoted body and soul to the “art” of torture. He’s deeply attached to his dynasty of torturers. But the main trait of his personality is his sadism, he expresses in almost all interactions. He’s both physically and verbally cruel, sometimes to the point of violating common sense. He’s addicted to sadistic pleasure and would drown his sorrow in alcohol if he doesn’t have victims. Subyss’ sense of self is deeply attached to him being a torturer and again, is devoted to this practice. He’s an artist who expresses his talent and creativity by breaking the human body. Being torture-addled, Subyss is by no means intelligent. He would tell someone he interrogates why they should not give him the information he seeks, would believe confessions extracted under torture, would bully someone who is his hiearchical superior and would run into a dangerous crowd while in a position of vulnerability (that he inflicted on himself by drinking himself to a stupor). He’s a man of many addiction, and his mind is almost always addled. Despite this, he still have enough consciousness to know what he is doing is wrong on some level, and is able to acknowledge humanitarian qualities when he sees them, as well as noticing social trends, provided that when he isn’t too addled, he is (occasionally) capable of some introspection and intelligent thoughts. He is also capable of getting some social cues, although he mostly uses that knowledge to hurt people. He’s somewhat of a dark empath, just a really dumb one. Subyss is also someone who is very impulsive, quick to change his mind and he’s attention is easily diverted. He gets also quite angry when people contradict his perceived authority and is someone who seem to enjoy attention and overall, shows certain symptoms of Histrionic Personality disorder. He’s influenceable, theatrical, flamboyant, prone to intense but shallow emotions that rapidly swing and is overly touchy and seductive. 

Qualities: Devoted, introspective and charismatic. Must have some medical knowledge, otherwise Damien would not have survived these two months. 

Flaws: Sadistic, cruel, impulsive, immature, bullying addicted to both torture and alcohol and overly sickly, mentally speaking.

In the manga, he’s present for only a few chapters, but he is still very memorable for all his cruelty, idiocy and flamboyance. We first are introduced to him as the man who tortured Damien for two months. Later, he’s shown to be a little of an exposition character and a running joke.

I think, since for Subyss themed songs they work better for Subilya, I think

"Va, va vis" by Florina. It's a song about letting go, and I think their ship is about that, plus, Subyss seems to have a soft side for Nicolas-Gabriel.

"Call me daddy" by Claude Kelly. I just imagine them both as switches.

"Mr Torture" by Helloween, more for Subyss himself than the Subilya ship.

I know this is kind of a disappointing awnser, but I'm not that familiar with those songs, at all.

Subyss is most snuggly (more like touchy) when he's intoxicated, especially towards Nicolas-Gabriel, on the rare occasions they meet. I don't think Nicolas-Gabriel is particularly thrilled on this, unless he himself is quite intoxicated. Sober Subyss is most likely to pierce someone's vocal cords than to snuggle with them.

Jean-Baptiste is one of the less snuggly person ever, exept in strict privacy with his mother, and even then, not without him being considerably stressed.

Charles-Henri was saddly never able to really snuggle with his family, nor friends...Not even Père Grisel. Adult!Charles is very warm with his wife, though. He likes to keep her close.

Eat the Rod, Spare the Child (Or Not)

Sometimes, Charles-Nicolas was too tired to take corrections. So, he devised a clever plan: feed Subyss his own birch rod. 

He made sure to come to the emptied torture chamber with nettle, strawberries, eggs and mint to ensure the taste would be well-covered. 

He would feed Subyss the birch rods intended to whip him for his prank. Bad move. 

Unfortunately for him...Subyss arrived at just the worst moment, when he was breaking some of the twigs to get out the sweet inner bark. Half of the rod was already broken to small pieces, the other half covered in egg. 

“Already thouroughly enjoying your birching, Sanson brat ?”

It was bad...Really bad. 

“I didn’t know you absolutely wanted me to use a harsher implement than this. It’s okay, I’ll remember it for the next time.” teased the torturer, caressing his apprentice’s fluffy hair. 

His eyes widened in fear. 

After a brief chase, Subyss took out a large stick. A large, solid stick. It lasted a long, long wile, with Charles-Nicolas forced to stay naked with the fire still unlit. When he tripped, and Subyss whipped remarkably hard for a man of his slender, enuch-like stature, the blow didn’t count, and almost each of them made him fall forward. 

“So much for the Sanson dexterity.” he mocked before leaving the room to fetch some alcohol. 

When he came back for “after care” it stung. It stung so much. Charles-Nicolas felt his entire body shaking uncontrollably. 

It stung, it hurt, his vision was blurry. 

Then, suddenly, Subyss held his arm to him. When he reached, mostly to help himself stand away from the hard stone, the man took back his arm and mocked him as he tripped on bruised flesh. 

“So pathetic !”

So, Subyss...

I think Subyss as a teenager was quite corpse-like, mostly because of a mixture of lack of sun-light and his time's conventional method of treating behavioral problems.

He and Nicolas-Gabriel are exes and occasional New Year lovers. They mostly met each other when they were younger. I think they truly deserve each other, but for different reasons.

-Subyss has multiple personality disorders on top of being torture-addled.

-He began exessive drinking at a young age

He's the same age as Jean-Baptiste, just that some lucky inbreeding and lack of sun-light slowed down the aging process.

-Jean-Baptiste and Subyss hate each other's guts.

Tonight I wanted to find other Innocent-related blogs (I read it a year ago and the fixation came back), so I scrolled through who you follow (didn't mean to stalk so sorry if it comes off like I did... it was my intention to find similar content creators) and I found 2 things:

1. Sakamoto's old blog where he posted foot pics

2. A blog called scripttorture (through looking at scriptstructure and other script- blogs which are all AMAZING btw) which made me realise how much effort and research Sakamoto put into his manga, and how accurate the scenes of and reactions to abuse really were. And also the fact subyss is a drinker who believes his job is an art, even though it's unsuccessful in nature and very very stupid. And the way Charles reacted more to Anne-Marthe's psychological conditioning than his father's physical abuse. And the way Anne-Marthe's punishment made Marie a lot more resilient and motivated and wanting to be in control.

I apologize for the rant, I have to share my thoughts on this manga and the fandom is WAY TOO DAMN SMALL. So sorry for making you put up with it.

Thanks. No need to apologize. Yeah...Do know of @scripttorture and read some of their bibliography...It's interesting. And yes, Shinichi Sakamoto did do his research on the psychology of torture, like Subyss being an idiot and Charles more impacted by psychological conditioning than physical abuse...To an extent. Charles-Henri also seems to be mostly suicidal in this manga. For example, at one point he considers slicing his veins and seriously intends to talk to his father he plans to become a monk and reject the family profession, after his father literally tortured him for rejecting the family profession.

Also, Shinichi Sakamoto's Charles-Henri actually displays almost all Slytherin values, exept self-preservation...Which is interesting. It's implied that he was able to hide his identity in a boarding school out of all places for a certain amount of time and still able to somewhat succeed academically.

I have devoted my university studies to this man, Charles-Henri Sanson, and...Let's just say he was rather incompetant at his job, was willing to risk his post, what was left of a reputation and possibly even his life for a night with a stranger, but miraculously survived many lynching mobs. The more I learn about the XVIIIth century, the more amazed I am this man made it passed 30. Also, my opinion on him is more revisionistic, as I don't think this man really cared about his reputation...at least not sincerely. Because when we place his desire for rehabilitation in the economical and political context of the French Revolution, it very clearly appears as an act of self-preservation. If he indeed attended boarding school and managed to be moderately successful, academically speaking, it's a sign that he was a very intelligent person.

Crimson eyes shone with sadistic glee at the young women verbally lashing out at him.

To her threat, he seemed quite unafraid. "You wouldn't be the first one to try and murder me. And I'm still here. Besides, it'll be rather hard to hold a knife if I decide to stretch you."

It was years since he had the opportunity to actually stretch the rack, now mostly used as a flogging surface.

He leaned back to make sure her bounds were secure (and he did tie quite strongly, nearly cutting off circulation), before slowly removing his jacket and loosening his shift to allow her to see his chest. A large scar stretch around were his heart was, stretching up his stern and pectoral muscles, with some more from the removal. Above it was a tatooed a small cross, much smaller than his scars. He removed some more clothes, baring his upper body, and turned around to let her see the large hedgehog tatooed accross his shoulder palid shoulder blades.

"If this didn't kill me, why do you think you can ?"

Discreetely, he moved forward, allowing himself to do a first crank. Not nearly enough to damage anything, but it kept her muscles and skin taught.

"Now, why don't you behave a little bit. Then, I won't dislocate anything, and settle for a whipping. But be warned, I can change my mind any minute."

Now that you gave me the sanson clinic hcs, can I have some about subyss with his "patients"?

Of course. Now, Subyss is the one to go for the extreme stuff quickly. If he can force someone to ingest melted sulfur, he will. He does not care if his victims live or not.

That doesn't mean he doesn't know how to maintain them alive, though, and he would spend time cleaning their wounds (and he'll make it as painful as possible). At questioning, Subyss is quite unskilled, and would ask either the wrong questions, or ask them in the wrong way so that he won't get an awnser.

With kids he's slightly "softer', mostly because people will complain if they die during the whipping. But that's really it. In honesty, he prefers to torture adult men, as this is the type he is most attracted to. He'd rather preserve what he perceives as good looks for as long as possible, and thus, is unlikely to disfigure his victims, but that's about it on the list of things he's unwilling to do, and even that's questionable.

Meta (funny)

For some reason, I think getting the brodequin from Jean-Baptiste as opposed to Subyss would be like getting branded on the butt as opposed to the privates. Still an incredibly painful and degrading experience, but one is an improvement over the other.

I am now obsessed with paralleling Jean-Baptiste and Subyss since they're such polar opposites and have vastly different responses to being exposed to violence from an early age, and like, would they even talk to each other? Know each other more than knowing of each other's existance?

I think Jean-Baptiste would regard Subyss as a potencial rival, for and foremost. He would occasionally cooperate with him for professional reasons, but that's it. He would absolutely despise Subyss, for a variety of reason.

Subyss would regard Jean-Baptiste's position as something desirable, but he knows he's no match for the next post of Paris, and it means having to compete with skilled intrigants and executioners. He teases, he hates, he looks down on, but that's it.

I think Subyss once gave Jean-Baptiste a "warm welcome" when he was once jailed for a botched hanging.

I've had a nasty cold for the past week and my throat is sore as hell, so can I have some Innocent fanservice (not horny/nsfw) of basically whoever? If you're uncomfortable anyway then crack will be fine too.

Oh, I think that normally, he's the one doing the needling.

He's unecessarely intimate and cruel during the needling, and not holding tight to keep them from squirming, but actually encourage them to do so. He enjoys seeing them accidentally hurt themselves in such ways. He will definitly mock them if they are scared of needles. He will birch them if they rebel, on the shoulders for adults, on the bum for kids (anyone under 17). That's on his good days. On his bad days, he'll take his witch pricker. Would always ask them to take off way more clothes than necessary for the needling to take place.

He's the reason Jean-Baptiste decided to do at least some of the needling himself.

-Subyss has no problems with racial slurrs. Partially because it's XVIIIth century, partially because he's a rude jerk the best of the time.

-I don't know why, but I imagine in a more realistic version of Innocent, he'll use both swear words and formal speech in the same sentence.

-He's master of backhanded compliments. Such as: "My, oh my. The thoughness of your joints amazes me. I am surprised someone that clumsy still doesn't have any knee problems."

-Mock-pity...He's a master of it.

-His voice is quite castrated and eerie, but he can also sound very bitchy.

-"Now, mister/miss/missus...I won't lie, it'll hurt quite a bit."

-To his child victims: "Why won't you be a good boy and danse for me ? I don't care if you thrash, in fact, I prefer it." (You know what kind of dancing I am talking about)
