It’s the year 2020.

The last Chronicles of Narnia movie came out 10 years ago and Netflix has set the premiere of their own adaptation in spring.

Because of that, the Special Anniversary Edition DVD box of all 3 movies comes out - with never-before-seen footage and special extra material.

So, obviously, you go to the nearest store and you buy it, even if you already have those dvd’s.

You come home and start a movie marathon.

It’s the end of the LWW and so far you haven’t seen anything new or extra.

But then you see it.

It’s the flash forward scene. The White Stag Hunt.

But it’s different.

Those are not the actors you usually see in the scene.

It’s them.

And it makes perfect sense, because it’s been 15 years since LWW came out and all four of them are now old enough to play adult versions of themselves.

That’s the “extra material” - the grand surprise.

But then you get to the end of the movie and you cry louder and harder than ever before.

Because now seeing their actual adult selves going back to their actual childhood selves has even bigger impact.

Makes it even more real.

on Edmund, sea serpents, and silence

so for a while now I’ve been meaning to do a little meta piece about the Dark Island and Edmund’s trauma, because Lewis has an interesting pattern of silence on difficult emotion and this is something that changes a lot in adaptation

the dark island the place where your dreams come true, in the most literal sense - if you have dreamed it, the island will make it real (sort of) - it has a line to your subconscious, to your worst fears. to this extent, the film was pretty much in line with the book

except in the book, it’s so much worse. Rhoop, the lord who was trapped there, is absolutely demented. the whole crew is terrified and row like mad to get out of there. Caspian orders them to flee because, he says, there are ‘some things no man can face’, and after it’s over he sends the crew to bed to recover

but what I really noticed last time I read it is that, once the Dark Island takes hold, we hear scraps from every major character about what they’re feeling/seeing - except one. you know who’s totally silent the whole time, and at no point says anything or is described?

Edmund.

literally not a word about him apart from Lucy wanting to be near him, after the Island starts to work on them. we don’t get anything at all about what he’s doing or saying or looks like, and we certainly don’t hear what it is that he sees - which is odd, given that he’s one of the most major characters.

In the film, they gave him a fear of sea serpents, which is fine I guess for an action sequence, but doesn’t feel right for Edmund to me - he’s known so much darker and more human horrors

the film briefly references his trauma with the Witch by having her appear, but it’s both short and a bit weird. the book - as covered - doesn’t mention what he saw at all, and that’s what I think is super interesting, because Lewis has a bit of a pattern of leaving gaps of silence on characters whose emotions are too difficult/dark/adult for a children’s book in a particular moment

the most major instance of this is Peter, Edmund and Lucy in TLB, when they tell Tirian that Susan is no longer a friend of Narnia. Edmund and Lucy are absolutely silent on the matter and Peter only gives a short statement of what has happened and doesn’t elaborate - all the other stuff comes from Eustace, Jill and Polly. And I always thought that into that silence you can read so much grief, and so much complex emotion that doesn’t really have a place in a children’s book

like when Lewis said in a letter that he thought of writing the story of what happened to Susan after TLB but it would be ‘too much like a grown-up novel’, so we know that he conceived of his characters as having ‘grown up’, adult emotional depth, but it’s not something he would put in his children’s books. and when there’s a moment in which it makes sense for one of the characters to be in an emotional situation that is too adult for a children’s book, he goes very quiet on them

hence why the complete lack of description of Edmund once the Dark Island begins to bring to life the crew’s worst nightmares sort of troubles me, because, in the context of Lewis’s writing, it hints at darker and more complex things for him there than Lewis would really go into, because, after all, that’s what makes sense for his character, having the past experiences that he does.

Everyone rightly gives credit to "There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it" for being the best opening line ever, but I don't think, "'Bother,' said Edmund, 'I've left my new torch in Narnia'" gets its due as the best closing line ever. Name a more iconic duo, I dare you.

Lucy Pevensie and Caspian.

HEAD-CANON: Sometime in the voyage of the dawn traveller, Caspian was shocked by Lucy’s beauty.

Lucy Pevensie And Caspian.

He was walking around the ship seeing his crew members enjoy the sunset, when all of a sudden he stopped by the view. Because there, talking with Edmund was Lucy and she looked beautiful.

The warm sun gave her cheeks a red flush, the golden light touching hew face and giving her features a grown look.

That was the moment Caspian knew she wasn’t a baby anymore; She was a queen, she had always been a queen. Her red scarlet lips had a warm smile but there was a fire in her eyes that allowed him to know that she was a warrior.

Whoever had the honor to call her wife would be lucky. He had said that no one would be like Susan, but for a second, just a tiny second, he knew that was a lie.

Because Lucy was as beautiful as the sea, and she had a fire as powerful as the sunset. And he wished, by God he wished he could call her his.

And as she turned around and looked at him, his heart shipped a beat.

She wasn’t a kid anymore.

And he had let his opportunity pass, but if it ever came back.

If it only came back...

He would be hers

And she would be his.

I often wonder about what Edmund, Eustace, and Lucy talked about for the rest of the summer.

I imagine they're all hanging out peacefully, reading or something, and then all of the sudden Edmund's like "Hey Eustace. Do you remember that time you tried to sue King Caspian of Narnia in British court of law first thing after being fished out of the ocean?"

And Eustace gets all embarrassed and grumbles to himself, so Lucy takes pity on him and volunteers "You know, the first time Edmund went into Narnia he literally took candy from a stranger"

And Eustace now demands that they explain everything because he believes them now, and I just think it would have been really good bonding time for them

I Always Love To Have A Calendar On My Wall That Reflects My Latest Fandom So, When January 2024 Came

I always love to have a calendar on my wall that reflects my latest fandom so, when January 2024 came round, the urge to have a Narnia calendar was rather strong. But despite their being no official Narnia calendars this year, I didn’t let that stop me :)

So, these are some pictures of the 2024 Narnia calendar I created for myself through a custom calendar printing service. And while I didn’t end up having the option to print a back cover for this calendar, I still loved how the last image turned out and thought it would at least be a great way of showing off the full image set without posting photos of every page individually :)

Fandom: The Chronicles of Narnia Character/theme: Susan Pevensie after The Last Battle Song: ‘Keep Us Connected’ by Celia Rose Gooding

I've included some thoughts and a general plot summary below the cut...

I was absolutely devastated when I first learned of Susan losing her whole family to a train crash in The Last Battle. And that Peter, Edmund and Lucy were still so young at the time. That was far too tragic an ending for all of them and I don’t think I’ll ever be over it :(

Right from the very first moment that I heard this song in the musical episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, it immediately made me think of Susan in this stage of her life and I knew I had to make a video with it. Then I proceeded to take a whole year to actually finish it lol

The general story here is that Susan initially has a tough time dealing with the loss of her family. Over time, this eventually turns to acceptance and with it, she also finds her way back to her memories of Narnia and all that she shared there with her family. She goes on to live a long fulfilling life and when she eventually dies, she is reunited with her family in Aslan’s Country. So, the beach scene at the end of the video is meant to be representative of that reunion in Aslan’s Country :)

Check out this gorgeous Caspeter fanart that I commissioned the amazingly talented @wannastayugly (aka theviscountjask on Twitter) to create for me.

It is based on one of my favorite scenes that I wrote in my fanfic 'Our Hands Are Tied' (specifically chapter 11) and I just LOVE how this turned out. 🥰
