Over a decade ago, Donald Glover wore a Spiderman costume.
The black community knew that there was something of value in that, something vital to contribute to the character, seeing themselves.
And a couple years later, Miles Morales was born.
Eventually so was Into the Spiderverse.
And now, today, Gwen Stacy hangs a trans pride flag in her room.
The trans community sees something of value in it, sees a story that needs to be told, a contribution to a character that adds a depth and complexity that wasn't there before. Something to relate to on a personal level.
And personally, I can't wait to see what happens next.

I'm getting so pissed with people who are saying Gwen isnt trans. Like they're trying to explain why her dad has a trans patch on his jacket and why she has a trans flag in her room, by saying she supports trans people... wtf???? Literally what ally has a TRANS FLAG, IN THEIR ROOM, BECAUSE THEY SUPPORT TRANS PEOPLE??? That's some shit closeted me would tell my parents when they saw me drawing rainbows. People that are saying this shit are literally just transphobic and dont want her to be trans. Gwen is trans and fuck everyone that argues against that.
One of my favorite things about internet is when fandoms come together to add so much more to a piece of media. Trans Gwen isn’t canon, but it’s the fans that make a show and to have a whole fandom add that depth to her character is so amazing and wholesome to me.

the existence of the trans patch sewn to gwen's dad's uniform means that either 1) he's just a really big ally (unlikely) or 2) gwen HAS come out at some point to her dad, which is significantly funnier because the patch means that he went "oh youre trans ? okay, cool. i will always love you and i will always support you" but then he also goes "oh youre also SPIDERWOMAN ? NO daughter of mine will be a crime fighting vigilante GET THE FUCK OUT MY HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!"

on a more positive note, the trans subtext with gwen is definitely intentional.
not just because of the “protect trans kids” thing in her room btw. there’s a few other moments like that as well. apparently the dad has a trans badge, i didn’t even see that part and i still caught the subtext.
but also, that shot you probably saw on twitter, where the trans colors are everywhere and the trans flag colors overlays in her hair?
yeah that’s deliberate. i was skeptical but i’m convinced now. there’s no other shot like that in the movie. there’s no other time her hair is overlaid in an multicolored gradient like that. this movie plays with color a lot, but in every other shot, her hair looks normal and is just one color (plus the tips). this was very obviously deliberate as a shot to STAND OUT and display those colors. the dialogue in the moment is about her feeling like she has to hide who she is.
that’s beyond coding. that’s done with purpose. that’s done to be as obvious as they could get away with.
I think there were more shots of Miguel’s actual back than of his actual face.
That was an absolutely fantastic movie. I definitely see Gwen as trans. Everything was gorgeous. I’m in love. Can’t wait for 3.
