Uniima C - Tumblr Posts
Question for the Uniima, how do they deal with the problem of not waiting for food to cool down?
They are kinda lucky they use wood for plates most of the time which doesn't heat up as much as other materials.
The inside of their mouth is also very sensitive (the tongue hands are a bit more numb with how much they use it), with our hands we don't feel the air around the food since we hold it away from our body but when uniima c hold something they have their body (mouth) around it, making it easy to feel the heat and hard to get burnt. (Unless they aren't paying attention and have to go put their tongue hand under some cold water. Burns do suck a lot.

Helpful guide
I'm really sorry for not responding earlier. I wanted to draw something to the answer but I just couldn't come up with what to draw and adhd-ly forgot about it.
Today is doodle day

A little wip comic with Neal and his first ever Uniima c student. They have important questions for him.

The creator of the first metal airplane. They have big dreams for the future but maybe little too ambitious. (they use their hands for many gestures since they work big part with humans for years)

some random classical fantasy dragon
Hey there
Here's the full sketchy comic of Neal's first Uniima C student asking a question.

I assume it's hard to read since I have yet to explain Uniima C expressions and Neal's expressions but you are welcome to guess how they feel.
The student's name is Fueem but Neal doesn't remember it with his hollow head. They are a salty one.
Both are speaking using sonomagic (what Neal teaches).
An introduction to Uniima C expressions. They are usually pretty subtle, these being bit exaggerated.
Their main way of emoting is sound. Often not moving a single (visible) muscle when doing it. Evolutionary this is big part due to most Foru predators being overly visual focused.

Take this as quide for this comic of Neal and Fueem.
More to that - Neal (teacher) is trying to be positive and helpful in his human way but is bit uncomfortable with the situation. The expressions he makes are also completely different from a regular Uniima's (Fueem doesn't know that).
Fueem on the other hand wants a specific answer from Neal. They came to study largely because the teacher was Uniima C and now they are disappointed Neal isn't acting like one.
They are trying to be polite but leave angry at the end.
Uniima C emotions are pretty similar to human ones, the difference is mostly social and how it's experienced. They are bit better at controlling their emotions and being aware of them than an average human. Meaning that in some corners of their society it's looked down on people with difficulty keeping emotions/expressions situation-acceptable (they are pretty specific).
They have bit more ways to express themselves while also showing emotion more performatively in communication. Which many humans would probably see as manipulative behavior but is very much a norm to Uniima. An expression (vocal or visual) can change a sentence by a lot. "Bring me the tool" can refer to a different tool in a happy context and in a sad context.
Some other stuff - Uniima rarely have phobias and when they do it's most often water or big predator related (this applies to Uniima ll as well).
They have more base-emotions than we do but it's less that they are different and more that they see mixes as basic emotions too. There's like 5 basic-ish types of happy-sad emotions.

After Uniima C facial expressions its time for Faulkner cartoony-arse expressions

He deserves more goofy ones but I got little lazy.
What other Uniima C have as an 'anger marking' is Neal's blush, nervous, uncomfy marker.
Neal's 'happy marking' is an upset marking since it curves downwards which is more like human sad face.
His 'brows' are less specific and just show surprise or happiness (happiness usually more subtle)
His other expressions use beak, head angle and hand gestures mimicking more human expressions.
He also talks while facing the other person. Uniima C communicate showing their face profile for better show of facial expressions (if they want to be polite).
Neal Faulkner is an elven raised Uniima C unfamiliar with Uniima C culture

Some basic coverage on wood

Some zoom-ins since it's probably unreadable at that scale
Still not home but happy from the poll
-Cold Uniima

A mask with markings sewed on top. Mix of uniima and elven fashion.
Foru doesn't have winters so this traveler had to try some new things, like wool.
Swimming (not a popular activity, fear of the deep or just fear of water is pretty common)

this uniima is naked which is not actually a taboo in many cultures. It's often that the body should not come in contact with "filth" rather than that it should be hidden. In activities where clothes aren't very 'protective' it's normal to show front body and when swimming it's completely fine to be naked. In other cultures it's more complicated but naked swimming is almost always expected.
(Some people also fear that wearing clothes when swimming will instantly drag them underwater.)

The true main character of "The story"
As usual, it's Prof. Neal Faulkner.
Since the setting is closer to medieval times than to 20th century it's not common to have a last name and to be a professor is like being a 'king of a field (science or other)'. Faulkner being the younger but more known professor of Sonomagics and Acoustics (out of two). All professors get their title from the current elven king after being nominated by their professor tutor. These tutors pick their disciples and they have the whole continent to pick.
Mr. Faulkner is not only very natural in his field but has had a giant impact on the science world thanks to his help discovering atoms or his own work 'medical use of sound' among others. Sadly it's been many years since his last breakthrough.
In his opinion non of these are really useful anyway without the technology to use all this knowledge /Steam engines are still in their experimental phase but this world will likely start with electricity much much sooner than us/.
Most of Faulkner's work consists of teaching noble heirs how to be annoyingly loud with sound manipulation, mostly unsuccessfuly.

Size comparison
I'm trying to make the magic much more about physic than other stuff so hopefully it wont get boring. Just need to research a lot more.
Why is Prof Faulkner's… head crest(?) far shorter compared to those of other Uniimas?

He doesn't know if it's a birth defect or a very early injury but it's one of those.
The crest is two horn bones fused together at the top, inside is the Uniima's vocal organ and the sound comes from the 4 holes at the front.
His crest is not really shorter, it's kinda just not there, making him physically mute. He can push air from his nostrils but it's no speech. It limits him in few other ways but he's doing fine.
(he also lacks all of his claws but those are definitely injury)
Sorry for using your question to infodump. Enjoy my not-refined-enough anatomy lesson.

Again, their ambitions are a bit too futuristic for the time period.
This is the author of the first metal plane that definitely didn't crash after a few meters (they are trying their best). For context, they are this expressive because they largely work with other races and live around humans. Their language here is translated.
storms are not magic

Hello there. I'm late but thank you very much for all the love you give me and the chance to share my critters with you.
Didn't know what to scribble for the celebration but here have an unrealistic uniima astronaut.
As well, this is a Raffle Post! If you want to participate you can reblog or comment on this post with the tag/word "critter" (if you are interested in a doodle of your oc or creature or other) and "design" (if you want a design doodle - meaning I could redesign ur oc or creature or make something new with your ideas).
I will pick one person for "critter" and one for "design" with the deadline being Tuesday or later if there are too few people.
-Outdated words +designs-

I think this is something of a first part of the "magic system" series of guides.
I will be talking more about what it means to be "physically more aware" and manipulate physics and I might borrow Neal for it.
Now, imagine you are a device connected to a supercomputer that can alter reality. You need to be set up to receive its signal but when you are set, you can alter some of it too (while being under its control a little I guess but who cares). To be clear the 'computer' isn't sentient and just follows programming.
For the context of "gods" here's a link to another post
Also, I decided to name the designers with shapes because they are easily understood by any culture. Hope you like △, you will probably see it a bit.
Ignore bad English and skulls I drew for no reason with little thought in them. "Pigeons" are an invasive species of hexapods by the way.

A small family
The two younger siblings still mostly eat "crop milk" from their parents but are already running around like the wild creatures they are.
Baby uniimas can walk and run a few days after hatching when their eyes are fully grown. Climbing needs a lot more practice so it's better to let them try climbing the parents before anything else.
Both parents take turns and will often compete a lot for their kids' affection (lovingly). Being the less-liked parent is a pain but to feed them you still have to work.
On average, there are two eggs per clutch with a pretty good survival chance for at least one.

Finally finished a pic of Fueem in their warm study/traveling outfit. They are a fancy one, who can afford quality bright clothing with their own symbols (however I need to figure those out before they are canon).
They have a single-piece dress/pants with a red 'suit' on top. When cold they will wear a bit more under that. There's also a leather backpack. These are ground clothes (better don't climb trees with them).
They also have gloves/socks but you are not supposed to notice those as they are uncool for a uniima c to wear.
Their tail is fashionably cut to be as little messy as possible but the 'feather fibers' are already growing back at the top.
(Fueem is one of the story characters and a student of Prof. Faulkner, they are the same student from that one comic).

Here is my current redesign of Uniima LL because they really needed it with the world changes.
For anyone who doesn't know Uniima LL are very closely related to Uniima C. They are an evolutionary branch that traveled to the lower deserts of Foru where they experienced welm... changes.
Just like Uniima C, their eyes are immovable and to focus they turn their heads (around 200°). Their expressions are also much like Uniima C (not the expression language but the system), with them moving their face markings in specific ways. This will sometimes lift other muscles with the markings, making them appear as smiling, upset, etc. to other humanoids.
They share a lot more with other uniimas than with the elven or human O.s.
The most common Uniima ll's believe of why they humanized is that their Designer wished for peace with the sloman Designer and gave them the ability to speak sloman(elven) language and soul.

I know u guys love walking so I tried to do my first walk cycle and made a mistake of trying to loop it. And meat legs are overrated.

Also trying to give you a bad brain lesson with Neal but he's slow.
how is gender seen amongst uniimas or even any other sentient species, do they take an example of humans? do they even have a concept of it. srry if this is strange
Not a strange question, very good question actually.
For uniima c, our concept of gender is something of a taboo. Just like us, they are bi-sex, but unlike us, they have 0 sexual dimorphism and it's impossible to tell someone's sex on sight. This means that they also don't have a concept of homosexuality or heterosexuality but many pairs can't have children. Adoption is very common and families will trade eggs or get them from the community "birther".
There's nothing like our gender in Uniima c society but they do have ranks and gender-like stereotypes based on "courting traditions/rituals/skills". It's usually an artistic expression that is inherently romantic.

(Uniima ll have a very similar system but in some areas they have less rules and take some sloman inspiration)
For O.s, sexual gender doesn't exist at all, and in non-humanoid O.s no gender exists. For human O.s however, the concept of femininity and masculinity exists and they often choose an identity based on this. It is partially their own invention and partially inspired by elven/slomen.
For Slomen gender is actually less binary than for O.s. The females are usually bigger with bigger authority and males have bigger display features (I have not drawn that at the time of this post) but transgenderism is not a new concept in any way and is in most places accepted as nothing unusual. The average recognized set of genders is about 5. Some genders have spiritual meanings as well.
The stars are not yet very developed by me but they are very strict about sex and gender.

Just sketching around but take this as an introduction to the criminal mind behind 'the alive plane' - Wrath flyer.
Big helper in the extinction of the largest wyvern.
They are probably in uniima "jail" or dead today.
They are not an important character but a big deal historicaly.
Hopefully Canard (the uniima who dreams of electric planes) isn't in any way inspired by this inventor's work.
