AU where Timoteo actually is a kind father/grandfather, none of the Vongola brothers die, and they discover Tsuanyoshi early on and take him under their wing.
In this world, the question of inheritance is not a competition. It's a game of hot-potato.
Enrico prefers being a field commander, and doesn't want the paperwork that comes with Don Vongola's desk.
Massimo is shy and prefers math - becoming Don Vongola is not his idea of a good time, and anyways, he's secretly in the middle of getting a PhD at a civilian university. He's got stuff he'd much rather spend time on over being Don.
Federico, through a convoluted series of unlikely events, has a fake identity as an advisor in a distant but allied family. Being Don Vongola would out him, and would cause a HUGE scandal, and would make it impossible for him to continue on in the advisor role, and he really likes the job, okay, and he's not in love with Donna Claudia di Santini, shut up.
Xanxus, of course, wants to lead the Varia, not the main family.
Tsuna doesn't want to touch the responsibility and the life-and-death decision-making that comes with being Don Vongola, not even with a ten-foot pole.
So. The Vongola Rings become the figurative hot potato, and they are each desperately trying to make sure one of the others ends up holding it when the music stops.
Of course, none of them are going to try and make themselves look like bad heirs, because that would reflect poorly on the family, and cause their aging father too much stress.
Cue shenanigans where they try to make each other look like the perfect, ideal, flawless crown prince for Timoteo to pick. Impersonating each other and forging each other's signature while doing philanthropic deeds in service of the family becomes second-nature.
(As a side effect, there is mass confusion about what the Vongola princes look like. Sometimes, the five have to work together in extraordinarily stupid ways to keep anyone from realizing what's going on.)
(Jokes on them: At a certain point, they all prove they'd be wonderful bosses by trying to frame their brothers for it.)
(In the end, Tsuanyoshi loses. It's an unfortunate side-effect of being the youngest, and therefore the most ganged-up on.)
