i was watching a youtube video about the three main character deaths you can use in a story (physical, professional & psychological) and consequently the three main threats that can hang over a character’s head, and i realised one of the reasons eugenides’s arc is so interesting in the queen’s thief is that he suffers all three.
the physical aspect is fairly self-evident (*insert hand pun*). obviously, he never actually dies, but the threat is ever present and he does suffer quite a lot of physical harm which deeply affects the plot and his character arc.
this goes hand in hand (i swear i wasn’t actually trying to insert a hand pun) with the professional death, because the loss of his hand means, to him, that he can never steal anything again. he overcomes this, but it’s terribly hard, and he goes through a lot of development because of it. then he gets himself into a “disaster”: he becomes king. and he can’t be the thief anymore, not like he used to. he can’t be independent, he can’t do whatever he wants. even though he can still work in the shadows, he’s in the light and everyone is looking at him, and all those eyes expect things from him. the king of attolia is about him reconciling his identity as thief and his identity as king, about him stepping into his new role.
of course, he’s not just a thief, he’s the thief. in the last book, the figure of the thief acquires a darker meaning. it’s threatening, and terrifying, a slippery slope. gen is always at risk of tripping, of falling, of completely losing his humanity. he suffers a lot psychologically through the series, but i’d say this is the main psychological death looming over him. and he doesn’t die, because a lot of people love him, and a lot of people are ready to catch him. “saved him from what? saved him from becoming the thief, the murderous figure sitting alone with his dead.”

This is a bit unrelated and I'm sorry to derail your post, but this feeling is so valid and I want to talk about it.
I can't say how many times my opinion of a piece of media or character or ship shifted negatively due to the fans. As a preteen/early teen, I read all of the Keeper of the Lost Cities books, I was on that side of Pinterest and I was on fandom, but I got so so tired of the fans that I dropped it altogether. The fans were so aggressive with their opinions I started getting anxious every time I looked at anything related to the fandom. And that's not an uncommon experience, for me or for fandoms. So many fandoms have this problem, where fans get so caught up in their opinions they refuse to participate in friendly dialogue and instead opt to get aggressive and insulting. And personally, I'm sick of it. I avoid most fandoms now. I don't join fandoms, I just consume the media privately and don't engage. And though there's nothing wrong with not being involved in a fandom, I think it's terrible that anyone should be made to feel as though they can't join in or that there is some kind of risk involved with participating in a fandom and having an opinion of their own about any given part of it.
If fandoms are communities that come together over shared enjoyment of a piece of media, why are people being mistreated, insulted, and made to feel unwelcome?
The Percabeth community SUCKS
Okay, I’m going to share something about this. The Percabeth fans suck.. especially when I post stuff that isn’t related to the ship. Anytime I talk about even something else, they unfollow me or block me. I posted a Valgrace piece and they unfollowed me. It makes me so mad considering I always have to talk about and share Percabeth art. I really wish I didn’t actually start drawing Percabeth because that ship is so overrated and overused. I do love it but I hate the fans of the ship.. I can’t even do anything. I can’t talk about my ocs or other ships.. it always has to be Percabeth this and Percabeth that.. Percabeth Percabeth Percabeth Percabeth Percabeth Percabeth Percabeth.
i just want to remind everyone that, since the grishaverse is kinda sorta based on the victorian era, and since wealthy victorian families dressed their toddlers (girls or boys) in dresses, and wylan was very wealthy growing up, there are definitely family portraits in existence of baby wylan wearing one of those goofy ass victorian baby dresses
He's absolutely so petty that he wouldn't tell people he could do it himself cause he likes having it done for him
Plus it encouraged the court to think he was weak
And putting pressure on his right hand hurts, and he said so, so 🤷♀️🤷♀️
You know what's so freaking funny about The King of Attolia:
Gen can apparently still scale the palace walls like a cat BUT he cannot cut his own food what???
My dude. You have a literal hook at the end of your bad arm. A hook that you are able to put some pressure on, if the bloody razor and your murderous abilities are any inclination. BUT you can't hold a piece of meat down to cut it with your other hand???
You can't use chopsticks?? A meat fork?? Anything?
Or is it just for show...to make you seem like the child king. O_O
might get stabbed for this but like the edits of walker scobell make me so uncomfy like ma'am that is a child. especially when they use clips of him from percy jackson like that is a 12 year old my good lady. and before you say "oh but im the same age as him" or "oh but i'm younger than him" that's still weird dawg. he is still a kid and so are you. while you shouldn't really be sexualising yourself when you're still in middle school or whatever that's your decision. walker, however, did not choose to be sexualised, so just don't.
a friend of mine is reading the queen’s thief and guys. guys. will someone in my life finally understand the cultural significance of “diplomacy. in my own name” and “and she believed him” and “stop whining and go to bed” and “i love your eyes, i love your ears and i love every single one of your ridiculous lies” and “I CAN DO ANYTHING I WANT”
