Hange's gender.

I said I’m tired about this matter but somehow people keep trying to convince me yet again about Hange’s gender to the point of being harmful, so I’ll just compile any information available and tell you what I think about it at the end.

I’ll cite important bits here along with the links to the original post because I know you guys are lazy and someone had to just do it for you. I get it.

And from this point on, anyone trying to talk to me or sending questions about this matter will be blocked instantly in order to keep my sanity.

Here’s the trivia from Hange’s AoT Wiki:

“The manga’s author, Hajime Isayama, has left Hange’s gender open to interpretation as he told his editor that ‘either one is fine’(1) and instructed Kodansha Comics not to confirm any gender in their translation. (2) Since then, Kodansha has removed gendered pronouns for Hange in their translation and clarified that indeed, Hange’s gender is up to the reader’s interpretation.” (3)

I got deep into the fandom a year ago. I did follow the manga even before then sometimes but never dug deeper to the point searching more in depth about each characters. Finally, one of my friend informed me about Hange’s gender ambiguity several months ago and showed the trivia.

I thought that’s a very cool idea from Isayama to let his character’s gender freely as what the reader thinks, so I stuck by it and believed it as canon. Many people in the fandom were telling me the same thing as well, so I agreed to it.

So finally I’ve searched the references deeper, and each references have different “opinion”. (1)

Link Q: Has Hange’s gender been decided? A: I asked Isayama-san before, but it seems that either one is okay.

So that means any gender is okay. (2)

Link Q: Did you confirm the characters’ genders with Isayama? For example, did you confirm with him that Hange is a woman? Or was it assumed? And do you usually confirm this kind of stuff with the authors? A: Isayama has confirmed that… we’re not allowed to confirm Hange’s gender. He has instructed us to avoid gendered pronouns when referring to Hange, or at least to use he AND she with equal frequency. - Link Q: The fandom’s debate over the instructions towards Hange’s gender is still going on. Can you clarify? Were those instructions for you or for everyone? A: I think I was very clear. Isayama instructed Kodansha Comics to avoid using gendered pronouns for Hange, or at least to use he/she and him/her with equal frequency.

“… at least to use he AND she with equal frequency.” That means Hange is non-binary. (3)

Link Q: A friend told me there are two canon agender characters in it. I think Nanaba and Hanji their names. Are these two really 100% agender, where that creator person said they don’t identify as male or female? A: I’ve said everything I intend to say on Hange (the short version: Hange’s gender is open to whatever interpretation you care to have), but editorial in Japan recently told us that Nanaba is female.

Unstated. Just ambiguous. Think however you want. And then there’s this song to compile the explanation about Hange’s gender coming from Isayama himself. You can see in this post.

I haven’t asked for a permission to cite that post yet so I won’t be putting it here. But to summarize it, Hange is gender-neutral (again, non-binary.) WITH ALL OF THAT, here are the options: a) Non-binary with the equal frequency of he/she. b) Either one is fine, however you want to think Hange as. c) Just don’t fucking care and get to move on. Enjoy your anime/manga without caring one bit about all of this. Here’s what I have to say.

I agree that canonically, Hange is non-binary.

The problem about all of this is that people are getting angry to the point of threatening everyone that doesn’t think the same and forcing creators to do things they want according to what they think even when the creators didn’t want to, those are just beyond disrespectful.

Hange is not just about their gender. They’re an amazingly constructed character by Isayama with a very unique personality and characteristics within the story. If you want to see or create Hange as you want to see as some sort of a “what-if"s, whether is it canon or not, it’s okay. Non-canon? It could be clarified as an Alternate Universe.

You want to make Hange as a representation of a non-binary character because that’s what the canon is and you feel represented by them? Then cool, you can do that. Or you want to make Hange as an image of a strong and independent female soldier/commander? You can do that, too. Maybe you want to view Hange as an amazing man with this unique personality? Sure do.

You don’t like it? Then go away and find things that you like rather than forcing people to do what you want when you’re not even willing to give these people any support since the very beginning.

I can understand that you’re getting angry if Hange is a real person and you want to stood by them, but Hange is a fictional character. You can do anything to them. Fiction ≠ real life.

And I’ll just say this again, no matter what gender Hange is, Hange is still Hange.

Don’t do harm to others just because you don’t agree to what others do believe.

I am disappointed and sad but i guess this is the direction isayama wanted to go so i dont have much to say about it.

I just really wish things had been different

i just noticed that most(not all) of the AOT fans are too preoccupied debating what is hange’s gender to the point that they are already neglecting her/their well-written and complex character.

Whether Hange is a female or NB she is/they are still Hange,the best SC commander, a strong and independent individual who set their/her own standards and not giving a fuck about the society’s standards, a wise individual, and a well-written character in SNK universe

Hange is more than her/their gender. Hange deserves more validation from the fandom. Hange is Hange.

So yeah, whether you perceive Hange as a female or non-binary...that’s okay! you are free to do that. But please don’t push others to have the same perception as yours. We all have different opinion and perceptions over some stuff and we need to respect that and be more open minded about it.

My opinion: Hanyo no yashahime is embarrassing and there is no way it has anything to do with inuyasha. I HATE THIS
