Hey, bitches! I could use some advice real quick. I just graduated and am currently applying for positions, and situations make my job prospects more difficult than normal. (V long story.) I was looking at a new position I saw on LinkedIn and saw that a school alum worked there, and it's someone who was at my school the same time I was. We worked for the same on-campus job, interned at the same place at different times, and had the same major. It was a small university, so I'd met her sister a few times, but I honestly can't recall if I ever officially met her. I wanted to reach out to her on LinkedIn to ask about her experience in the role, especially since it's the exact same position that I'm applying for, but I don't know if that'd be weird or not. Networking has always been an issue for me, but this'd be the perfect position and I'd honestly love to hear her experiences about it, but I don't know what to do. Any advice? (Sorry, I'm getting super frazzled about job applications and this looks like such a good one!!)
REACH OUT TO HER!!!! You can connect with her on LinkedIn, which would be the professional route, but donāt hesitate to hit her up on other social media! This is the whole point of alumni! Just tell her āIām a friend of your sister, but I donāt know if you remember me from collegeā¦ā then politely ask if she has a few minutes to chat about the company. If sheās anything like most alums Iāve met, sheāll feel obligated to give you the time of day.
Networking can be such a pain in the ass, but itās absolutely worth it. If you have the connections, USE THEM. Talking to an alumna from my alma mater saved me from accepting a job at a terrible company once. I would leap at the chance to return the favor.
Dafuq is Networking? And How Do I Do It Remotely?Ā
