My overall thoughts on Season 5?
It was good. Not the best season ever, and it DEFINITELY had it's flaws, but it was overall a pretty good season.
Some people like to complain about it, but I think the pacing on Joint Training was honestly great (except match 2, which was too drawn out) and I think the reason some people disliked it was the same reason people initially disliked it in the manga (it sucks waiting weekly for a very low stakes arc). But I liked seeing the kids have fun and I enjoyed meeting Class 1B.
Endeavor Agency was too stretched and certainly didnāt need a movie tie-in slapped in the middle of it, but I can actually appreciate the slowness of the Todoroki flashback episode now that Iāve gotten through my initial blind fury. Itās still kind of stupid to have 8 minutes of flashback and then not to animate one of the actually important panels (Rei after burning Shoto) but itās also kind of neat to have one reference point for all-things Todoroki (every family member appears, we are reminded how everyone feels about Enji, we see how Shotoās opinion has changed since the start of the series, and we see all the pivotal moments that are important moving forward). Season 6 contains a deeper look into the childhoods of the Todoroki kids, and I think this reference point will be helpful for those who need to remember everything we knew beforehand.
The Shirakumo episode was amazing. No comments, no complaints. I love my boy
And MVA wasā¦ ok obviously Iām salty as a manga reader, but Iāve seen some anime onlies here explain their POV and they seemed to enjoy and understand it just fine. This makes me happy. Of course Iām sad we lost some context that made the eventual payoffs feel a little cheaper (like the League being poor and then Toga being able to buy a coat, or Spinner asking Shiggy where the League was heading and later declaring he wants to follow him) but it was still nice to see some of the stuff animated. The first two episodes were a tiny bit too cramped for my taste (episode 1 consisted of 2 MASSIVE exposition dumps and have no time to process and episode 2 just hadā¦ a lot) but the 3rd and 4th were great. In my opinion, the 5th was awesome too, but a lot of its payoff got lost due to the cuts from earlier, so it didnāt pack as big of a punch even though I knew what was happening going in. As a final thought, part of me is actually glad the MVA episodes didnāt get bogged down with filler.
And then the finale was pretty good too! Iām sure some people will have issues with the montage showing where each kid did their work study, but Iām kind of glad itās there. I think it will be nice to be able to recognize heroes based on their relationships to their work study kids, as opposed to random pros who look vaguely familiar. Itās a little odd that they didnāt include the cliffhanger, but Iām excited nonetheless!
Top 5 episodes (my opinion, please be nice if it doesnāt match with yours)
5. That Which Is Inherited
4. Vestiges
3. Sad Manās Parade
2. More of a Hero Than Anyone
1. Tenko Shimura Origins
Iāve said this before, but I hate the āAdrien is a Sentimonsterā theory. I absolutely hate it. It doesnāt do anything except make the story worse and send a really fucked up message about Adrienās character actually.
On the surface, I get the shock factor behind the show revealing him to be a secret sentimonster, but thatās where all the appeal of that idea ends and then immediately burns into a dumpster fire.
Adrienās whole story is centered around his autonomy and how itās something he isnāt ever allowed to have unless he goes against the wishes of everyone around him.
Making him a sentimonster is revealing that āno, he actually never had it to begin with, and the idea that autonomy is something he could ever really have is flawed because anyone with the peacock miraculous regardless of who has it could potentially very easily just take it all away from him in an instant, and thereās not a damn thing he can do about it.ā
I think thatās kinda fucked up actually, why would someone want that?
The thing with the upcoming Ladynoir conflict is that it goes far beyond Chat Noir's feelings and place in the team. Likes yes, he's questioning his worth more and more as Chat Noir and if he really is that irreplaceable, that's for sure.
But the biggest problems it's currently creating is how dangerous the secrets between them are getting regarding their fight with Shadowmoth, and how it can be compared to Gabriel and Nathalie's team.
Because yes, it's mainly Gabriel, but he and Nathalie basically have no secrets (that we know of) between each other. They know each identities, Gabriel shares his worries and plans with Nathalie, she gives suggestions too and even come herself with plans that are pretty good (I'm thinking about Optigami and now Hack San). And even if at the end of the day, Gabriel always looses, he only needs one victory to win the war...and he's getting closer and closer to taking advantage of our heroes as time goes on.
Now regarding Ladybug and Chat Noir, it's not much their identities being a secret that is dangerous - while it would give them lots of strength, they're currently not ready and things are delicate that with Hawkmoth being Chat Noir's father. However, all the other secrets between them and their lack of communication... There's no way the Ladynoir conflict won't be noticed by Gabriel and taken advantage of, or risk having repercussions.
Lots of people are complaining about Marinette relying more on Alya than Chat Noir, and yes again it's gonna hurt Chat Noir but it's also not a mistake Marinette is making at all. No, the problem is that Chat Noir, as a permanent hero and bearer of one of the miraculous wanted by the villain, is not aware of major information that can compromise their advantage on Shadowmoth.
Hopefully before leaving to London, Marinette explained to him that she was gonna leave and that she's gonna entrust her miraculous to someone else will she's away. But if she hasn't, the fact that she didn't tell him someone knows her identity can be really dangerous because how can he trusts a new Ladybug coming out of nowhere? This is putting the battle against Hack San at high risks, moreover because this season sentimonsters taking the shape of people they know have been made to trick them. I'm very curious to see how it's gonna happen there. And tbh it was already borderline risky that he didn't know in Sentibubbler.
But more importantly, hiding Rena Furtive from Chat Noir is extremely dangerous. We already saw in Sentibubbler how him not knowing about Rena being a permanent holder could have been dangerous, even though it was avoided successfully, but here? If he doesn't know some illusions are on the field and if he accidentally reveals on battle an illusion, it could blow up the entire Rena Furtive cover to Hawkmoth. And that's super dangerous for the hero team (and for Alya, and for Marinette's identity and so on).
So yeah I'm rambling at this point but I'd be curious and excited if the show addresses it because to me, that's where Marinette's errors are regarding withholding information from Chat Noir š and if this is gonna be acknowledged -or worse, happen- when the inevitable blow up occurs
May I Whine for a Minute?
So, Hack-san was a fairly enjoyable episode for the most part.
Two parts in particular that I really liked are this adorable little DJ WiFi smooch and the fact that Marinette specifically told Alya to make sure that she laughs at Chat Noirās jokes because it makes him happy. ^.^ Look at Marinette worrying about her partnerās happiness.
I feel a little cheated, though. The scene where Ladybug and Chat Noir talked about things was way too short. I feel like they didnāt really talk and that this big, plot-relevant thing was squished into thirty seconds at the end of the episode. ^.^;
I guess this is what fanfiction is for? Iām glad that Marinette did talk to him, though, even if Alya had to prompt her to do it. The look on Marinetteās face tells me that talking to Chat Noir wasnāt even on her radar. It just goes to show how overwhelmed she still is that she doesnāt have the bandwidth to consider how her actions are affecting Chat.
By the way, heās totally lying when he says that heās not sad about her revealing her identity to someone. He may not realize it, but heās definitely sad that itās not him sheās relying on and trusting. I think heās just moreĀ sad about his realization that he could lose her, so thatās whatās at the forefront of his mind. Itās a lot to unpack, and heās not nearly done processing.
I would also like to take a minute to hold up this episode as an example for the people who always bug me about my characterization of Adrien as getting sad and turning in on himself instead of getting angry and blowing up at others. I donāt know why people want me to write angry Adrien, but it just doesnāt fit my understanding of his character to write him as getting angry all the time. In canon, we usually see him getting frustrated but then turning that in on himself and wondering what heās done wrong or why he isnāt good enough. Years of emotional abuse in his home life have taught him not to express anger but to internalize those feelings.
On a lighter note, I love the soft Lady Noir moment here. ^w^
Also, the reflection of her in his eyes is lovely. I really like this shot.
This is gonna live in my head rent free what the FUCK
