He removed his scarf and hung it on the coat rack. The tips of his slender fingers ran over one button and fiddled with it, and then another, until his coat joined his scarf. His eyes wandered over to the tree in the corner of the room and he admired the lights and tinsel strung around it. His eyes lingered on the star on top as he walked around the couch to get a closer view, only for his foot to bump into something.
There sat his short, fiery partner by his foot. There was ribbon tied around Brea’s wrists and ankles, and a poorly tied bow on the top of her head that could have been done by none other than Jake, his mischievous best friend. A piece of duct tape covered her mouth. Surely he must have forced some concoction on her to negate her powers, otherwise he would have found Jake lying by his foot wrapped in gauze.
Despite the demon’s lack of mobility, she still thrashed this way and that, and her face was turning as red as the bow on her head. Alex let out a low chuckle and knelt in front of her. As he started to reach out for the bow, he saw a small card tucked in her shirt pocket. Alex pulled it out and recognized his best friend’s hand-writing.
No return policy.

The wise words of Sam Raegan, to be honest.
True love is when your desire for the object of your affection to be happy is greater than your desire to bone them.

Sam’s Advice #1
Alright, so apparently there are people in the world whom need some advice, and decided that it’d be a good idea to come to me. But I suppose that I’ll grace you all with my wisdom. First letter I’ve got here is from Anonymous:
Dear advice columnist (that is really just fucking Sam),
I've known this guy for quite a while now and I really like him, I just feel like we never have the right time or moment for me to make a move of some sort. Also sometimes he acts strangely, as if he doesn't know me all that well. What can I do to become closer to him and see if he likes me?
Well, Ro- I mean “Anonymous,” I’m going to take a guess and say that you both know each other pretty well already. So really, you just need to tell Ze- the guy how you feel and figure out how he feels, you need to wait for that right moment.
Just like a writer waiting for THE RIGHT words to write something (breaking down the fourth wall and calling out the blogger), or a photographer needs THE RIGHT scenery to take a picture.
I totally get it. I mean, waiting for wind to blow the trees leaves just right, or for every strand of my model’s hair to be just right, or when I’m taking pictures at the zoo then for the animals to get in the right positions-
If I wanted for the right time to take a picture, I would be living in a box on the side of the road while other photographers, real photographers, seized all of the opportunities that I passed up in sake of waiting for perfection.
Take charge of the situation and make it the right moment, before someone else does. As much as I hate having to type out this cheesy shit, if you keep waiting for the right moment, you will become an old woman or man living alone while children are throwing eggs at your house. And making the moment right would make your confession much more memorable. For all you know, this mystery man may be acting strangely because he likes you back and is also waiting for the right moment that neither of you are willing to create.
So in short, get your head out of your ass and do something about your feelings.
This has been a session of Sam’s Advice with your favorite asshole, Samuel Raegan.
// Ask Sam for advice! But not for legitimate advice. Sam is a bit of an ass and this is solely for comedic purposes.
The young man looked at her with furrowed eyebrows. “You hate that they’re happy?”
“No,” Terez corrected, “I hate that I can feel their happiness, but I still have yet to feel my own.”
Prompt #650
“I can feel everyone’s happiness…I hate it.”
“To find beauty in such a thing. Snowflakes falling from the sky. Shoved this way and that by the wind. Nothing to hold onto. No stability. None. Powerless concerning where it will end up in the end. To begin with such originality, such uniqueness, none of the other snowflakes having that individual snowflake’s same pattern, only for it to fall atop the others and then be viewed as a blanket of white, stripped of it’s individuality to fade amongst its fellow snowflakes.”
“I suppose it is a monstrosity to take delight from looking out the window...”
“And to instead ignore the beauty that the world has to offer? To turn away from millions of snowflakes dancing to a song that only they can hear until, one by one, they join the other snowflakes to stay or melt together and are ready to catch and care for other snowflakes that wish to join them?”
“Good God, you make my head hurt.”
“I make you think. A hurting head is a sign of a lazy mind. Never let your mind grow lazy, Alice.”
Mini Introduction??
Well, shit. I need to write more, and meet some fellow writers on here, so here’s a mini introduction:
My name is Joyce, and I knew that I wanted to be an author since second grade. I love to learn about all forms of writing. As a child, I actually spent a lot of time analyzing books that I read. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I struggle with writing description, and I love to come up with quotes and write in my characters’ voices. My favorites are Terez’s and Allen’s. :’)
I’ll probably post writing prompts every once in a while, specifically writing prompts. I’ll mostly post little scenes that I imagine or my responses to writing prompts. If you ever want to shoot me a message or an ask, or reblog something I wrote and add onto it, please do! I would love to communicate with other writers!!
And one last thing: I adopted Holden Caulfield, Puck and Hamlet as my children. <3
I’ll probably be posting more of my own original work more than anything, especially quotes/dialogue prompts and my responses to prompt blogs. I’ll make posts about original characters occasionally, I’m sure. Right now I’m pretty inactive, but I’m working to get my shit together, so if you’re interested, please do follow me?
I would really really love to follow more blogs that post:
original fiction/short stories/etc.
writing tips
writing resources
stuff about original characters
I’m currently following no writers at all and it breaks my heart! Reblog if you’re a writing blog so I can follow you!
Writing Prompt (Inspired by This):
"You said that I would always be your thunder and you would always be my lightning.”
“And I meant it.”
“Then why are you leaving me?”
“Because the speed of light travels faster than the speed of sound.”
It was even funny to him.
Funny that the man who married her was also the man to put her in her grave. Funny that the perpetrator was also the inheritor. Funny that more water leaked from the pores of his forehead than his eyes.
That’s the way life is.
He was the type of person who, after burying his wife, would shrug and say, “That’s the way life is.”
“Oh, my. Even I’m not that kinky.” He pulled his hands out of the pockets of his coat and started creeping in her direction.
“You know that’s not what I meant.” As he continued to get closer, she tried to yank her arms from the chair, but the rope was too tight. She froze as soon as she felt the back of his fingers brush against her cheek.
“Regardless, Evelyn, I told you that you would be thinking of me.”
“You’ve been on my mind mind a lot.” Seeing a smile blossom on his mouth, she continued. “Usually covered in blood and screaming. It puts me to sleep at night.”
“Carl is two seconds from giving Jacob a black eye, Jacob has been itching to beat the shit out of Carl since he’s started hanging out with us, Marla is still pissy with Lauren for stealing her favorite My Little Pony pencil in the second grade--”
“I didn’t steal it!”
“-- and with me having severe mysophobia, I can tell you right now that I’m not touching any of your guys’ filthy hands to summon ‘the power of friendship.’ It’s just not the answer, Jeff.”
Lazy Writing Prompt #342
“I don’t think the power of friendship is going to save us, Jeff!”
“We won’t know until we try!”
Actually...
There’s a lot more to astrology than having just one sign. You have an entire chart, which is called your natal chart. The sign that you know based off of the day you were born is called your “sun sign.” I like to give my characters a sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars and rising/ascendant. Below is a brief description of what each placement deals with:
Sun: How people see you when they get to know you.
Moon: How you are emotionally and what people who really know you well see (usually immediate family and one or two close friends).
Mercury: How you think and speak.
Venus: How you approach relationships, especially romantic relationships. Also deals with your style.
Mars: What you’re like when you’re angry. Also deals with what you’re like sexually.
Rising/Ascendant: Your appearance and how people see you upon first impression.
There’s a lot more to astrology than this, but I’ve found that just this helps plenty. Also, there are some restrictions. The two that exist for the above placements are:
1. The sun and Mercury can only be one sign apart at most. For example, if someone has a Taurus sun, their Mercury can only be the sign immediately before it (Aries), the same sign or the sign immediately after it (Gemini). Usually people’s sun and Mercury are the same sign. If they’re different signs, it is likely that the individual struggles with communication. My little sister has a Taurus sun and an Aries Mercury and she often speaks louder and comes off as more assertive and at times more aggressive than she means to when speaking.
2. The sun and Venus can only be two signs apart at most. If someone has a Gemini sun, their Venus is either Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer or Leo.
Below is an example of one of my characters, Brea, and the placements I’ve currently given her, along with what each placement means:
Sun: Aries
When people take the time to get to know Brea, they find her to be impatient, aggressive and naïve, but passionate, courageous and optimistic.
Moon: Leo
Brea is a lot more sensitive than she likes others to know. She is immensely loyal and desperate for approval, especially from those dear to her.
Mercury: Aries
She often speaks before thinking and she’s a loud speaker. She doesn’t use a wide range of vocabulary.
Venus: Aquarius
She is oblivious when it comes to love. She takes a long time to realize when she has feelings for someone, and then even longer to figure out what those feelings are. She is friendly and most likely to befriend “misfits” or anyone who stands out.
Mars: Leo
Brea is quick to act and quick to take charge. She’s a great leader, but her temper is not pretty.
Rising: Aries
People know when she walks into a room. Her presence is strong and people can tell that she’s a leader.
There is still a lot that I don’t know about astrology, but if anyone has any questions, I’d be happy to answer them through asks or messages!!
Creating Characters' Personalities Tip
If you’re having trouble creating characters with vivid personalities, base characters off of the zodiac signs. Seriously, it helps so much. Obviously, you don’t have to restrict yourself to the way the sign is supposed to act, but their personality traits are a great starting point.
I forgot a few things!
Your moon would tell you what is most likely to upset you. With Brea’s moon being in Leo, she gets upset when she is betrayed and when her pride is wounded.
Your Mars would tell you what is most likely to anger you. With Brea’s Mars also being in Leo, betrayal and wounding her pride also make her frustrated.
Your Venus also shows what you’re attracted to. Brea’s Venus is in Aquarius, so she’d be more attracted to someone who doesn’t cling to her and someone who respects her independence.
A few more reasons why I love using this method for creating characters:
- It helps you to keep your characters consistent and in character.
- It gives you a lot of important things to think about-- how your character speaks (Mercury), what matters most to your character (moon), the vibes your character gives off initially vs. what he/she is actually like (rising/ascendant vs. rest of the chart), etc.
- If you’re struggling to come up with your character’s biggest difficulty throughout the story, you can look at his/her moon sign. You can see what is most likely to break your character down, and then it’s much easier to decide which direction your story should go in order to make that happen.
- You can look up gifs for a certain placement (type in “Gemini Venus gifs” or “Venus in Gemini gifs” and enjoy how accurate they are for your character. ;)
